I love to see people focus on supporting a cause at art auctions. Morna and I used to donate artwork to an international art school called Pilchuck every year and it was not uncommon to see bidders pay well over market prices because they were supporting a cause they believed in. By contrast we were often asked to donate to a Vancouver organization that made arts education available to underprivileged children called Arts Umbrella and the bidders always seemed to there to get a deal and buy things for less than market value. In both cases the buyer was able write off their donation at tax time and they took home a beautiful piece of art.
