View Full Version : Create a Young X-Men team

This has no doubt been done before, but not recently, and not with the rules I'm going to impose on it, so it probably warrants it's own thread.
Create a Young(er) X-Men team, with the following constraints:
You must have at least 2 characters from each of the following (but see below):
New Mutants
Generation X
New X-Men\Young X-Men
You must also include at least one original new character, and one existing full-time X-Man to mentor the team.
You may choose to substitute one character from any of the above titles for another entirely new character.
You must have a maximum of ten characters, and a minimum of eight.
You may also post a short history of your team, set in either current or future continuity, but this doesn't have to be part of your original post (I'll post mine later).
I will begin:
Cannonball (leader\mentor) (NM)
Moonstar (NM)
Husk (GX)
Jubilee (GX)
Hollow (GX)
Rockslide (NXM)
Anole (NXM)
Dust (NXM)
Reach (New)

- Danielle Moonstar/Mirage (Leader/Mentor): She's a better teacher than Emma wishes she could be.
- Karma (Co-leader/ Assistant Leader): She needs to play a role in some way.
Comedic Relief; these two seem to always be picking on each other:
- Rockslide
- Anole
Possible Romantic hookup:
- Husk
- Chamber/Decibel
Other members:
- Stepford Cuckoos (3): They need to play a role somewhere. Why not let them be mentored by a former psychic, Dani, and be mentored by Karma. She may not be at Emma's level, but it's a start.

Plus in the books, the students liked her more; saddened by the fact she was fired. I'm also going on what I've read too. I wasn't trying to be deroggitory towards Emma, I'm just going by the fact that the students liked her more...

Realizing that although they are in a "war" for their survival, everyone is not cut out to be killers or soldiers Cyclops puts together a Young X-men team to be a intelligence gathering/spy team.
Gambit (mentor)
Skids (NM)
Karma (NM)
Dust (NXM)
Prodigy (NXM)
Vincente (GX...okay a bit of a cheat since he was only a member in the AOA but was a character in the Gen X comic)
Hellion (NXM)
A new technophile character..like Sage except not full of suck.

I totally love Young X-Teams!
Dani Moonstar with Valkyrie powers
Skids
mysterious doppleganger of Rusty
Anole
Rockslide
Mondo
Cordelia Frost
Vincente
Husk
New Character: Angela Stavros (Roulette's previously mentioned sister) She's got the same luck based powers her sister had.
Danielle gets a visit from Hela and is granted strength/wisdom as well as her Valkyrie powers back.
Skids is planted as a spy from Shield to monitor the X-men. Should she rat on them? Sally is all confused!
Rusty's doppleganger shows up right after Skids does. FREAK OUT! Who is he!!!! Turns out he's a double agent from Magneto's crew. Is it really Rusty!?!?!
Anole is placed on the team along with Rockslide to learn. Originally they aren't active members of the field squad along with another youngster, the new Roulette! She's just as bitchy and manipulative as her sister was and she's got a serious mad on for Emma's ilk. The three quickly get thrown into the mix and have to save the vets.
Mondo and Cordelia Frost turn up. Dating. Is it another clone of Mondo? Cordy's always been a tricky one. Can anyone trust her? Or her beau? They are the wild cards. Danielle especially doesn't like her.
Husk finds Vincente in a Mutie Carny show. He's been freed of Emplate's thrall, but severely abused, first by Marius and then by the human Carny folk that Marius sold him too. She takes him under her wing and promises to keep him safe. She decides that safety will be more likely with her brother's friend rather than on the main squad or on their own. Is that a promise she can keep when Marius returns?
John Francis Moore writes this. Chris Bachalo draws.
It's a twisty turny series in which the reader isn't sure who's on who's side. Who's going to betray who first? Will they manage to come together? or will they end up as fodder for the cannons?
Find out in 30 folks!

Mentor/Team leader; Kitty Pryde
(young enough to still relate to the kids but is still a fully paid-up X-man. Obvious choice. Inconveniently trapped in magic bullet flying though space... what was he thinking...)
Team;
Franklin Richards
('bout time for this kid to start being Fantastic*)
Rockslide
(muscle and comic relief. Probably the funniest character in the X-men continuity at the moment)
Dust
(great power, great character, great potential)
Pixie
(if someone wrote her as a kid again instead of the new Pornstar Barbie Pixie fom Uncanny then great choice)
Stepford Cuckoos
(pre-requisite team psychics, creepy and entertaining. Pretty funny too)
Blindfold
(just so much fun with the crazy ramblings)
Anole
(hes teetering on edge of being really messed up. Lota potential there. Running joke of every 6 months he loses a new body piece which grows back like his arm)
This group to me has the right mix of light hearted fun (Rockslide, Cuckoos, Blindfold, Pixie) and serious pathos (Anole, Dust, Kitty when shes all preachy). I think this team could be great. Must be better then the current Young X-men line up anyway. I mean Ink must be the stupidest character with the stupidest power ever.
*see what I did there.

Plus in the books, the students liked her more; saddened by the fact she was fired. I'm also going on what I've read too. I wasn't trying to be deroggitory towards Emma, I'm just going by the fact that the students liked her more...
Well let's see, Dani's students were upset. Not the Hellions. And when the book changed writers, (excluding the blood bath that was the whole bus debacle), the Hellion made up most of the team. They were the ones who were properly trained and quite frankly, who are still breathing. Especially after Dani left.
And let us not forget that, in HoM (which granted everyone there greatest wish) Dani got her own set of students and was no different from Emma. That just goes to show that anyone can surprise you.
Gen X. The only reason why most of the characters are gone or in obscurity are all because of circumstance and the fact that Marvel likes to pretend Gen X never happened. Emma taught them well. Especially Jubilee and M. Jubilee learned great leadership skills and how to build moral while M learned to be human, and to feel.
Um woa. Of the two of them, he's not the one sounding like an idiot now. Amp down buddy. Breathe... He's allowed to think that Emma is a terrible teacher.
Mind your business. It's not your favorite character he is constantly bashing and saying nasty things about. When it's constant, I have a right to be pissed.

If you want people to mind their own business maybe you shouldn't air your laundry in a public forum, the clue is in the name...
He can say all the nasty things he wants about Emma (and quite frankly he's right 9 times out of 10, she was a great Hellfire villain and everthing after that has been crap IMHO) and you can argue with him all you want. But do it here and people can and probably will comment on it.

Fine. I give up. I don't feel like fighting with everyone. Of course, you can still have an opinion and not be rude about it.
But whatever, I apologize for being upset that something I love and spend a ton of money (and time) on a month doesn't matter to some people, because they're just "comic book characters."

I want a relatively small team at first to establish a "core" dynamic that I thought was missing from New X-Men. The large cast made it very cliquey, especially when there were squads and new characters were constantly being brought in.
But since the bare minimum is eight members and the only other characters I like either don't fit the group I'm envisioning (Dust, Bling) or are pre-occupied (Cannonball, Monet) I'll make Cannonball and Monet part-time mentors who want to become teachers but are still involved in their respective X-Teams.
I know, I know Monet is in Detroit. But she's the ambassador's daughter. She can do that.

Sorry for butting in as I did, but I wanted to stick up for him. If he said the same to you, I'd stick up for you. You're really going to have tro develop a thicker skin. It's like this on comic book message boards all the time. Everyone's favorites get bashed, not just yours.

Mondo (GX)
Husk (GX)

Okay, so you've got Cannonball stepping up to the role of teacher. You've got Dani working hard to develop into a non-powered hero. You've got the ex-villian (Mondo). You've got the brainy, good girl (Husk). You've got the rebellious rabble-rouser (Surge). You've got the cocky kid turned healer (Elixir). And then there's Whisper, the new character. She's a blind girl who's gifted with the power of clairaudience (along with clairvoyance, one of the most seldom-used psionic powers when it comes to comic books). Basically, it's psychic hearing. She can hear thoughts sometimes, but usually she can pick up things like emotions, which sound like different kinds of background noise. And she can hear disturbances in the astral plane (kind of sounds like static). She's kind of the quiet one of the group. She's always focusing pretty intently, sorting out the real sounds from the psychic ones.

I just remembered Gen X  was sitting in class and then it came to me out of nowhere.
I don't hate Emma, I just don't like her after Messiah Complex, like the whole moving to San Francisco thing. I respected her when she was a businesswoman/teacher, she may have slept with scott, but she had power, status, worked, and had responsibilities as a teacher. She may have had questionable morals, but i could respect a woman of power.
I lost respect for her character recently, but I don't hate her (blame current x-writers), plus it irked me when she fired Dani, because I like Dani a lot as a character.
I loved her in Gen X, anythine before that, when morrison wrote her, and astonishing wasnt too bad for me. Uncanny is ruining her for me. my apologies if I gave you the wrong impression though. both of us were wrong in some way...

Okay, so this is my team:
Moonstar: The leader and has her illusion and quantum arrows powers!
Douglock: Okay, so a bit of a cheat I guess, but they were both original New Mutants, so it works!
Sunspot: He is the financial backer of the team, but gets into more action then he really wants. Is still the Lord Imperial of the Hellfire Club.
Decibel: I like his current state, but wish he'd come back to the X-Fold.
Husk: She isn't really doing much of anything else, so why not!
Rockslide: One of my favorites and adds heart and sheer power too the team.
Surge: Next generation of strong X-Woman starts with Nori, among others.
Anole: Another fave, he doesn't want to be there, but really has no other way to live than as an adventurer.
Dust: She is another future leading lady of the X-Men, and is one of the most diverse characters in ages.
Prodigy: A human hero! Plain and simple. He is the also just as experienced as any veteran, but without the everyday experience!
So, yeah, this is my team meeting the guidelines. However, I know that I didn't really pick a veteran member, but Husk and Decibel were full X-Men status and All of the original New Mutants have enough experince to practically be cconsidered veterans! Oh, poop, I didn't make a new character! Darn! Sorry!

I love you're original character! Very unique!
Thanks. It's a concept I came up with a while back. I wanted to use a psychic power that doesn't get used much in comics. Originally, I wanted to create a deaf person who had clairvoyance ("psychic sight"). However, I couldn't come up with a good name. After all, "Vision" is taken. The best I could come up with is "Optic", which I think most X-Men readers would associate more with "optic blasts" than anything else (perhaps "Vista"). So, I instead came up with Whisper and decided to give the clairvoyance to an established character in the story I was brewing in my head.
I just realized that I violated the "eight character minimum" rule. If I had to add anyone, I would like it to be Skin returned from the dead as sort of a mysterious character. No one would know how he came back and he'd be keeping that and other things a big secret.

Beast- Finally Has a chance to over-see a team of young mutants. Doesn't play as active a role. More like an unofficial Headmaster. Completely respected and loved by the rest of the cast. He tries to keep the team feeling like kids and not army recruits.
Chimera (Dani Moonstar)- After the depowered finally regain their mutations back, she takes full control over her ability as well as a new codename. She is leading professor among the older staff. Takes a much more militant role.
Cannonball- Another professor of the students. Becomes the pacifist of the group, but he inderstand why they need to train to defend themselves.
Magma- The scary one. She's the one who none of the students mess with because when she's angry, the world trembles.
Gaia- Emma Frost finally located her after months of searching after M-Day. Her power levels were amplified from the other dimension she was being kept in, but after she lost her power because of M-Day and she got them back, she's needed help learning to cope with her newly regained abilities. Danielle pays special attention on her.
Chamber- After the depowered mutants got their powers back, Jono's DNA was rewritten and all signs of Apocolypse were whiped out of his body. He regained his original powers and lost part of his face and chest once again to it. He's learning to also develop his telepthy further. He is also in contact with Paige and rekindling their old romance together.
Mercury- After taking some time off from the New X-Men, Cessily has returned to finish her training. She's back and remains the heart of the team.
Anole- After all the hardships he's been through, he's developed a much rougher personality. He's completely involved in his training so that he may one day become the next "Wolverine." Let's see what happens if he ever has to take another life...
WallFlower- Ressurected and healed(crippled arm) by the hand, and taught to be an excellent martial artist and to control her powers to assassinate. After being rescued by the main Astonishing team, they put her in the care of Dani to help fix her mind and bring her back to normal.
Briar(New Character)- A formerly depowered mutant. After getting his powers back, he hopes to learn from the X-Men and defend himself and to make sure that no one will ever have to face what happened to him alone. Feels a deep connection to Anole and hopes to teach him to open his heart up to people once again. His serene appearance and calm personality hide a wicked temper when his loved ones are messed with. He's got chalk white skin with bright yellow hair with bright red roots, and violet eyes. He has an incredible healing factor since his his mutation gave him almost a completely plant base physiology. Also has absolute control over plant based life forms as well as an empathic connection to them.

Cable - the mentor
Cannonball (NM)
Mirage (NM)
Chamber (GX)
Husk (GX)
Mercury (NXM)
Dust (NXM)
Rockslide (NXM)
Surge (NXM)

I dig your line up. Very cool. Nice new addition as well.
A little off topic but...how did those new warriors die?
Didnt buy the ish, but I flipped through it at the shop.
Detective Sykes set a trap for them and caught them. They had a whole team of armored people to fight and bring the New Warriors in. One of them had a jetpack or something that was malfunctioning. It was about to blow up and Ripcord tried to take it off him to save his life. It wasnt working. Skybolt flew forward to try and fly Ripcord out of the way yelling "Its too late, you cant save him" or something like that. It blew up before they could get away and they both got caught in the blast.
The team went back to home base and Nightthrasher finally told them what he's been working on this whole time. He's been building a time machine to bring the old New Warriors back. He'll go back in time to prevent Dwayne's death and the Civil War and all the bad thats come from it. This will bring Christine (Tattoo/Longstrike) and Ripcord and Skybolt back as well. But the Detective had a tracer on them, so they crashed the New Warriors' hide out. They all jump into the time machine, but before it closes, Detective Sykes jumps in as well. They all supposedly wind up a few months in the past, but they open the door and see lots of Iron Men flying through the sky. Clearly, they arent when they think they are...

My Young X-Men:
The young mutants have decided that they can't trust the X-Men. They were supposed to keep them safe but have failed again and again since the first class of New Mutants. They take it up amongst themselves to keep the young mutants out there safe and deal with those who wish to hurt children, human or mutant alike.
Cannonball: Has been an X-Man but realizes that the X-Men often fail to keep their younger charges safe. Leads the Young X-Men.
Husk: I've always wanted to see Paige and Sam on a team together! Husk is the second in command as she too has been an X-Man but spent more time as a member of Generation X than as a member on the "adult squad."
Match: Hot headed, literally and figuratively, and never really developed during his time with the New X-Men. Was the leader of the Paragons while at the school. He actually took it upon himself to search out his old friends and start a team to fight the crimes committed against young mutants and those who can't help themselves, but gave up leadership to Cannonball in lieu of his experience.
Anole: Fan favorite so you gotta have him!
Mondo: Brain washed by Black Tom Cassidy, he's recently been freed but is still fighting his programmed hatred to Generation X including Husk. Sticks around because he was a victim of the same things the Young X-Men fight against. From Cordelia Frost to Black Tom, he's been used by others and is trying to find and define himself.
Dust: Once a mutant slave herself, Dust is the group's largest source of information on fighting child and mutant trafficking. She continues on hoping her fights will bring her closer to finding her mother.
Torpid: New character kinda. Was a Morlock in X-Men: Evolution. Possesses abnormally large hands that constantly secrete a paralyzing toxin. Anyone she touches is paralyzed depending on the length of time of contact. Another rescue from the child trafficking ring, Torpid hasn't said a word since she was found by the Young X-Men.
Electric Eve: A mutant runaway possessing the ability of electricity generation, Eve has been everything from a teenage prostitute to a heroin junkie. Like Mondo, Torpid, and Dust, she's suffered first hand and is willing to kill anyone that dares touch another child.

wow thats nuts.
time travel...booo.
UNLESS OF COURSE, its done by the time-defying original bad @$$, Ms. Illyana Rasputin. ha ha ha.
And that leads RIGHT INTO MY LINE UP.... ha ha...
Certified X-Mentor: Illyana's big brother Colossus.
New Mutant members:
Illyana herself, soul-reclaimed and no longer demonic, although still capable of magical feats.
Rictor, repowered and fully capable of causing the earth to quake.
Ideally these two would act as junior leaders to the team.
Generation X Members:
Artie and Leech. HOwever they're considerably older and have a finer tuned sense of the powers. Artie his a fully functioning telepath as well as capable of casting telepathic projections, often mistaken for illusions which he uses to disquise his appearance. Leech can project his siphoning powers negating other powered individuals, as well as temporarily amplify (although exhausting to do so)
Young X-Men:
Prodigy. With his knowledge restored, he's bad @$$ as is and fully capable of assisting with training and tactician.
Loa. Matter disolution capabilities.
Match. Pryokinetic.
And original member:
Rebound. He's surrounded by a continuously active gravity field allowing him a level of invulnerability. Most attacks merely bounce off of him. He's also capable of utilizing this field to project himself across long distances, like bouncing.

The Peacemakers
Bishop: Mentor
Sunspot: NM #1--strength and wealth
Magik: NM #2--arcane and transport
Anole: New X-Men #1--agility and stealth
Nezho: New X-Men #2--strength
Monet: Gen X #1--strength, flight, telepathy, wealth, good looks and sarcasm
Synch: Gen X #2--trouble shooter, all around nice guy
Ryu: New--Japanese genius on par with Amadeus Cho, telekinetic on par with Hellion, martial artist on par with Psylocke and flirt on part with Gambit; can also turn into dragon and fly through space without need of breathing apparatus
This team is formed as Bishop's answer to Cyclop's X-Force. Committed to using whatever means necessary--short of lethal force--to shape events that insure the continued existence of mutants. Based in South Beach with a secondary headquarters in Louisiana, their first mission brings them into conflict with Nastir and Sym, followed by Fitzroy and then Death herself (aided by Thanos) who wants Synch back and is willing to kill anyone who stands in her path.
Romantic Couplings--Sunspot and Magik, Monet and Synch, Anole and Ryu, and Ryu and Sophia (who has a reoccurring role).
Drama--Monet and Magik (Monet can't understand Magik's lack of fashion sense); Sunspot and Nezho (Sunspot thinks Nezho should stop worrying about dying and instead focus on going out like a hero similar to Achilles); Ryu and Monet (both feels that the other threatens their status as the most powerful and hottest member of the team).
Most important relationship--Bishop and Synch. Synch looks to Bishop like a son does a father (very pre Deadly Genesis Cyclops, Professor relationship). Bishop sees Synch as his eventual successor and wants to make sure he does right by him.

I love making new teams, but I will probably go outside of the rules a little bit as well, since both of my favorite Gen X characters are dead and I don't like people coming back from the dead.
The team would be mentored by Dani, Northstar and Husk. The team itself would be:
Surge- Definitely a very strong character, whom I really did not like until around the end of the series. I will be sad if she just disappears now. She along with Prodigy shares the leadership, and they are still having some romantic problems.
Anole- Not wanting to go into traditional super-heroics, he joins this team because he feels like they have a cause he can actually support. He is hesitant to really join into any fights, but he believes in this team's mission.
Prodigy- Using all the knowledge he has, he really wants to make this world a better place. Not only does he provide a wealth of information, he also is one of the most skilled members of the team, knowing tons of fighting methods, technology, thievery and even a little magic, which he happened to pick up from Dani's past knowledge of magic, he really can help in any situation.
Ricochet- Not wanting to register and not really looking to do the super-heroing either, Rico takes the opportunity to come out to San Francisco, along with his father to just live a simple life in a community where he will be accepted. He happens to meet Surge and kinda falls for her more forceful attitude. He gets hooked up in this project trying to get with her, not knowing about her history with David.
Dust- She has been through a rough year, along with many of the other characters on this squad. She is the one this whole story centers on, as the team's first "mission" is to find her mother and to end the slave trade she has been a part of.
Nezhno- Comes in as a favor to Dust, who has been his friend the whole time. He has been unsastisfied to say the least of his time in Wakanda. After going home to a country where he is an outcast, he tries to start new friendships with the other students, which is proving to be more of a struggle than he realized.
The team starts out more as a class than a team at first. Northstar, who said he wanted to come in as a teacher instead of a hero, decides to teach an elective on Historical Revolutionary Leaders. this is his class. Husk is his teaching assistant and she has given the class the final assignment of starting a project that could revolutionize the world. Harkening back to the time she spent during the Counter X Gen X I want to see her trying to change the world through unconventional methods. The real story starts out when Dust says she wants to find her mother and end the slave trade.
Since these characters are young they still have some idealism. They think they can change the world with their powers. While they are not going on missions to fight the Brotherhood or anything, they will still run into trouble that requires them to fight as a team.
The other thing I want to see with this team is them behaving as teens still. i think they should be going camping, taking field trips, going to movies, playing sports, everything, and this should be happening in the background. Kind of like when X-Force went on their road-trip.

Storm (mentor) - Yes I know she is a prominent XM but fuck marvel for marrying her off and making her a fucking trophy wife. I want my Punk goddess back!!! I choose her in the mentor role because
a. Excellent leadership skills (too many stories to name.)
b. Presents a strong but nurturing role to young mutants. (Rogue, Shadowcat, Nezhno, Jubilee.)
c. Can light foots of lighting up your Ass.
NM (Headmaster) Dani Moonstar - works strictly as the team's therapist and counselor. Students come to her to discuss their daily lives, how they are coping with missions, and other craziness that goes on.
Field Leader(s)
Sync - Because whenever black characters get awesome they either
a. Die.
b. get de-powered.
c. or get character assassinated.
But race is not my reason for Sync. Throughout GenX, he has shown a level of maturity, leadership, and sacrifice that would make any X-man proud. I think he has a lot of potential that was wasted when they killed him off.
M - Because she's RICH BITCH!!
NXM
Dust - calm, collected, Afghani. Field leader if and when Everett and/or Monet are absent. Constantly pushing herself to be better. She true to her beliefs and morals but is now increasingly becoming more defensive seeing how she is not only being scapegoated as a mutant by also a Muslim by the people that hate and fear her. She butts heads with fellow teammate Entropy in regards to life, philosophy and religion. Closest to her fellow x-man Mercury who she sees as a sister.
RockSlide - boastful, loyal, built like a truck. Because every team needs a lovable asshole with a heart as big as his mouth. Has better mastered his mutation and now can raise stone structures and shapes to help aid his team. Has a major crush on Storm who he thinks is the only woman "worthy" of his maniless. Bickers with M even if it means
Anole - agile, sincere, silent. Team's scout and infiltrator. He has learned much from Storm's past as a street urchin and is further being trained by Gambit to be a master thief. Always optimistic but is now coping with the death of his teammates and
New Character: Entropy - Omega level mutant whose powers are heavily in flux hence making him a danger to all around. Southeast asian mutant with Indo/Pak or Thai origins with powers that relate to physics and gravity manipulation. This includes flight. Time and place distrotions within selective areas. Force, mass and speed control of objects and basically kicking your ass all over the place.
Stoic by nature, he always is feels inferior and cautious knowing that he has not mastered his powers which leads him to often have a nihilistic view of life. He is an atheist who hold science as his foundation and often comes to philosophical and religious disagreements with Dust. They both have a strong morals that clash time to time but he can't help feel attached/attracted to Dust even if the feelings are not reciprocated.
Mercury - Upbeat, Malleable, looks like cutlery. Believes still that the world can be a better place if fought for hard enough she is mortar of this team. Closest to her is Dust and Rockslide, who she sees as a sister and brother trying to create for herself a makeshift family that she so desperately needs.
BTW way they all hate Emma Frost.

Cannonball (leader) - lots of experience and a will to lead
Jubilee (repowered) - tremendous pyrotechnic power, she just has to overcome her fear of using it
Moonstar (repowered) - her classic version can really mess with your mind
Synch - he can be anyone he wants
Monet - team tank (and bankroll)
Mercury
Dust
Husk - can keep her big bro in line
Wow...I just realized that my lineup is pretty chick-heavy.

Gambit (associate)
Three mentors:
Cannonball
Moonstar -- Depowered, but since Asgard has returned, I'd slowly bring back her Valkyrie powers.
Husk
Rockslide
Dust
Anole
Mercury
Leech -- I would age him to what I feel should be his true age: roughly 14-15 (though his mutation keeps him rather short). He made his debut when Kitty was 14, and she was last seen as around 20. So, it's been about 6-7 years since then. He still can't control his power, so he'll be using that collar Masque's Morlocks slapped on him recently.
Noir (new guy)
His story (in a nutshell): Richard Troia's a 16-17-year-old kid from New Orleans with darkforce/phasing powers. His powers surfaced, turning his skin a dark greyish-brownish colour, one night when he was out on the streets with some friends, just a few days before Katrina hit. Scared to return home with his mutation so evident, he stayed out well after dark and was ambushed in a park by some racist scum-type guys. To hide their crime, they dumped him in a ditch in one of the seedier parts of town.
He was found by a doctor, who reluctantly practices voodoo. Unable to save Richard through science, the doctor uses his mojo. Before Richard can regain consciousness, Katrina hits. Unknown to either of them, Richard's family evacuates without him, and pretty much fear him dead after the storm. After Richard regains consciousness, he's still psychologically traumatized from the beating, suffering from PTSD.
Richard's mental condition worsens as the weeks and months go by, finally reaching a boiling point, where he accidentally attacks the doctor (and it becomes apparent that he's being possessed by at least a few loa). Realizing what he's done, Richard shamefully runs off into the night.
Years pass...
The Story:
It all starts in New Orleans... Gambit's hanging in his house. It's a particularly rough night for him as he thinks about his lost friendships among the X-Men. On a shelf sits a device, a portable Cerebra unit, one he took from the mansion once, but it now reminds him of a place he once call home.
He activates it, and as it powers up, it sounds an alarm. There's a mutant nearby. Remy goes to investigate, and in a dark alley, confronts the mutant. A shadowy, demonic form with horns is standing over a teenager with a gun. Remy attacks, causing the hulking shadow to turn its attention from the kid with the gun. An intense battle wages across New Orleans, with the shadow shifting between several forms. The battle eventually stops in front of the doctor's clinic. The boy had been making his way back there, since it was the last place he'd felt safe, even if it was years ago. Upon seeing the doctor, Richard powers down, but then ashamed, he vanishes.
Remy, seeing that it was just a confused kid and being given a brief explanation from the doctor, subsequently calls the X-Men, but a few won't speak to him. He finally talks to Dani, who arranges to pick the boy up and help him. They arrive in New Orleans, have a few more skirmishes with Richard, before talking him into joining.
It's eventually learned that Richard is possessed by three warrior loa, but they've only been possessing him as protection. The boy is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, and they've been trying, in their own way, to help, especially when the boy is stressed out. As each loa possesses the kid, they use the boy's darkforce powers (which look similar to Shade the Changing Man when used) to appear as they want.
Ogoun: The most stable of the three, but also the most uncompromising. He's a military general in attitude. Looks like a suit of armor and wields a darkforce sabre or machete.
Sobo: Looks like a soldier, with a darkforce machine gun that fires "bullets" of darkforce.
Bosou: Wild and crazy and full of rage. Hates being confined. Looks like the Hulk, but pitch black and with three horns on his head.
With the X-Men's help, these loa will slowly but surely be dealt with. It'll take some time, especially in the case of Bosou.
A subplot is how people feel about Gambit. There's still a lot of unease and hostility from his time with the Marauders. I'd probably keep them in New Orleans for a few arcs before taking the team on the road, first trying to track down Richard's family (but maybe finding some mutants that have fallen through the cracks, because Decimation sucks like that).

With Bedlam mentoring the kids in the former MUSE base in Sanfran he takes in:
Anole
Trance
Elixir
Dust
Mercury
Magik
Gentle
Wallflower(ressurceted and a bit more badass)
New character-Chimera: Empath with numerous abilities including absorbig empathic energy and releasing it as energy/force/light blasts.

I know that this doesn't fit the criteria, at all, but I was thinking about the other X-Students and seeing how most, if not all, have migrated to SanFran, I think they could warrant an X-Book, or mini at least, all their own! Cyclops keeps saying that the X-Men are not a school anymore, but that doesn't mean that all the kids should stop going, or that they even want to stop. So it would be cool to see all the other, or at least a group of, the other kids, that aren't being used in the other X-Titles or that are full X-Men, and follow them and their lives in the new town, at a public school, and still being a trained by the X-Men, cause even if they want it or not, they are the future of the team! Also, I can see them encountering at least one or two new mutant teens.
X-Students:
Loa
Trance
Match
Indra
Bling
Onyxx
Blindfold
*Supporting*
Prodigy
Surge
Mercury
Gentle
The Supporting characters would be in school too, at the start, but eventually the four will be pulled away to the X-Men. The main kids will all stay focused on school. This was just a thought, hope someone likes.

The Young X-Men is just simply composed of some of my favorites. The bickering/mistrust between Danielle and Emma would drive many a subplot, with poor Sam doubling as referee at times.
