View Full Version : Which X-Man is "Unluckiest at Love"?

Not everyone gets to spend the majority of their time in continuity shacking up with hot redheaded or blonde telepaths, with interims of nailing Colleen Wing and Lee Forrester. Nuh uh.
A lot of the X-Men have terrible romantic histories, where they just can't seem to get things right.
A few examples:
Rogue- Can't touch anybody, and keeps getting jerked around by Gambit.
Wolverine- How many dead girlfriends does this guy have? Seriously.
Iceman - Polaris bails on him for Havok, Nurse Annie jerks him around and leaves for... Havok, Infectia tries to kill him, Opal Tanaka lies to him about having his baby, and Mystique flat-out gives him Nanocrabs and keeps trying to kill him.
Cannonball- He's statutorially raped by Lila Cheney, then hooks up with Boom-Boom (who cheats on him with his best friend), and then has an entire marriage and kids falsified in his mind by Serafina using Lady M to deceive him.
X-23 - Doesn't even know how to process her feelings for Hellion.
Storm- Doesn't marry Forge, despite wanting to. Ends up becoming T'Challa's trophy wife.
Gambit- Married to a woman who wants him dead, and can't touch Rogue.
Jubilee- Doesn't realize she's in love with Skin until he's dead, then contemplates having necrophilic closure by boning his corpse.
Chamber/Decibel- Blows up his first girlfriend, Gayle Edgerton, during their first kiss, and keeps pushing his second love, Husk, away until she ends up as a jailbait squeeze for Warren Worthington.
And so on. Feel free to give your own $0.02 about which X-Man you think is Unluckiest at Love, or thoughts on someone not on this list.

She didn't. She lied to him about it, in his Marvel "Icons" miniseries. That's what makes him have even worse romantic luck.
Marrow was pretty unlucky at love, herself.

I always felt sorriest for Rogue.
But let's not forget about Scott here. He may not be the unluckiest guy in X-lore, but he deserves to be on the list.
First girlfriend seemingly dies. Then he gets her back and she dies again.
In between there was Madelyne, who ended up being a pawn of one of his enemies. (I'm usually the first to defend Maddie against any of her detractors, and believe that she really did have a good reason to turn on Scott. Still, you have to admit that the two of them getting together was "unlucky" for both. Come to think of it, Madelyne is also very unlucky in love.)
Finally he ends up with Emma Frost. And he can do better than Emma!!! Not to mention that the relationship has driven a wedge between him and his daughter. (Hey, now that I mention that, how does Cable feel about Scott and Emma? Scott's his pop too, right?)

Scott is lucky to get any attention at all from Emma. He has nothing to complain about.

Warpath has had it kind of rough...
He finds out the hot Latina girl he's hooking up with is trying to exploit their relationship to get him to work for Sledge... he and Siryn had a "not-quite" unrealized relationship... and then, he starts boning an intergalactic cat/skunk lady widow on the rebound...
Not exactly the best of luck, there.

Rachel is not his daughter and even if she was, no big loss. Cable on the other hand is not the type to get hangups over things like this. Neither should he considering that he's older than his dad.

It's true that the Scott from this timeline didn't actually conceive her, but I always got the impression that the two of them thought of one another as father and daughter following Scott's eventual discovery of her origin.
"No big loss"?!?!!?? Grrr... :evilangry:
Jubilee- Doesn't realize she's in love with Skin until he's dead, then contemplates having necrophilic closure by boning his corpse.
Something tells me that there's a certain degree of exaggeration here....

As to Cyclops:
Let's not forget him losing Jean Grey twice (once as Dark Phoenix - by suicide) and twice as Phoenix - killed by Magneto).
Or Madelyine Pryor (the clone).
Or Lee (post-Jean, pre-Madelyine).
The guy's a born loser.

Iceman, hands down.
The others on the list have had bad romantic relationships, but Bobby is the only one that appears to never ever have anyone that cared for him. He's been used more times than a bench seat at Grand Central Station.
They need to hook him up with someone who cares. It would be interesting to see if he could deal with a serious relationship, given his high immaturity for his age.

For me it has to be Logan. He falls in love with women who are “taken” who then reciprocate a little (Jean) or don’t see him that way (Rose). He ends up killing them (Mariko in a mercy killing, Rose by mistake), has memories of them being killed (the falsified memory of Silver Fox), gets engaged to international terrorists, or has the whole Jean fetish going on (and she keeps dying on him). Oh and he is apparently most attractive to tween girls (Kitty, Jubes, Armor, Megan etc)
So yeah Logan is for me the unluckiest. But not as unlucky as his girl friends.

Rogue is the most tragic. Poor dearie. If only she were ugly it would make it would make it easier on me.
Storm is also up there. She should have someone marrying her for power and prestige not the other way around. Besides she's a goddess. She should be polyamorous and serve as the head matriarch of a group of hot boys.
Then there Iceman. He's sad because he has so many daddy issues he can't express his true sexuality.
I think Cannonball is leaning towards incest. Paige is the only one who really understands him.
Scott deserves anything bad he gets. I pity him not.

I would go with an X-Man that has never been in love. That's pretty hard to find, actually, since you know someone like Hisako could easily have a relationship if she wanted to and if she doesn't already. You'd have to look for someone that finds it physically hard to find love, which is even harder because all of the official X-Men have been rendered as supermodels at one point or another.
Nightcrawler is kind of deformed, but he's cashed in as much as any normal guy. I guess I'll settle on Beast, though. He's been with a number of women, but was he ever actually in love? For the past 20 years he's had a furry blue penis, is any woman taking the bait?

Scott was pretty unlucky with Jean dying all the time, and Maddie, but he has Emma now. Wolverine is by far the unluckiest. Rogue can't touch anyone, but at least she does find some sort of relationship every once in a while, like with Gambit. Everyone woman that Wolverine has ever loved dies. Jean? Dead. Mariko? Dead. Itsu? Dead. Rose? Dead. Atlantean Chick? Dead...see a pattern here? lol

Plus they have had periods where they could touch and lived a happy life. Oh man, I'd forgotten about Hank.
Trish Tilby is pretty sweet on the eyes, but she really tore the guy's heart out in a Morrison-penned New X-Men issue shortly after the mutation he underwent in X-Treme X-Men. Let's go over it...
First, she dumped him over the phone.
Second, she did it on an answering machine or voice mail.
Third, she told him that she was dumping him because the tabloids were calling their relationship "bestiality", which was probably the thing that hurt him the most even though I'm mentioning it second-last.
Fourth (and this might be just bad luck in general instead of love-related misfortune, but it certainly made Hank's night even worse), right after that happened he got attacked by Cassandra Nova, who did everything she could to pour salt into the fresh wound using both taunts and telepathy.
Just for what he went through on that one night, Hank McCoy is very unlucky in love! :frown:
Pssh... No.
She did regret not shagging him in the middle of his funeral, though.
Are you saying that Jubes regretted that she didn't shag him while he was alive, or that she regretted not shagging him while he was in the coffin with all the mourners watching? It's important that we know where the emphasis is in that sentence, WBE!!!!

First, her relationship with Jono/Chamber was on and off and well, like Nurse Annie said (that psycho bitch), what kind of girl wants a guy a girl can't kiss? They had something, it eventually ended, and they made a cute couple.
Then she had Angel/ Warren Worthington. Of course you'd expect it to end after shagging in front of her own mother, plus he is a billionaire. She got left after a while but Warren was busy being a nillionaire, flirting with various women, even the mayor of San Francisco. Nice to see them together again (Secret Invasion: X-men), but dammit, he's a billionaire and he just moves on without her, she doesn't deserve that...

$10 says the spurned mayor of San Francisco turns into the Goblyn Queen or aligns herself with the Purifiers for revenge.
As for the thread subject, I vote for Dazzler. She dated/married a guy who lost his memory at least three times. Imagine being separated from the man you love only to be reunited and discover he doesn't remember your name, much less your relationship! She spent 15 (comic book) years fighting her husband's war instead of cultivating her own life and pop career only for the relationship to break up in the end anyway because of his skanky tendencies AND lack of memory!

It is rather weird that she doesn't simply switch her power off through technological means. It's been established that everyone and their sister can apparently do that. Wolverine just shut her powers down in the Danger Room when he tested her. (Wow that sounded far lass naughty in my head)
And even if you want to ignore that, you can't tell me Forge can't whip up a power inhibitor in 5 minutes over lunch.I know they're trying to keep the angst going, but it's kinda hard to swallow after so many examples of power dampening technology.
(And even then, a catsuit with a carefully placed zipper and a condom could also do miracles, I'm sure...)

(And even then, a catsuit with a carefully placed zipper and a condom could also do miracles, I'm sure...)Well Ultimate Rogue used to say she felt like she was being punisher for some sin or curse and thats why she didn't get a cure.

I'd say Rogue.......BUT:

The Neutralizer was still out there after Storm got hit with it. Mystique used it on Wolfsbane. Not to mention, Dr. Agee's project, to build a machine to do the same. Rogue and Mystique both destroyed it together, though, for fear that it would be used to depower mutants against their will.

Well Ultimate Rogue used to say she felt like she was being punisher for some sin or curse and thats why she didn't get a cure.
Yeah but Ultimate Rogue has uber-religious tendencies the 616 Rogue never had. There were hints that 616 Rogue may have been beaten and/or abused as a kid and that that was a cause of her lack of power control, but then later writers completely dumped that, making it pretty much just a mystery why Rogue can't control it but Carol in her body could.

I know, but I wasn't referring to the actual Neutralizer weapon Storm got hit with. Or Agee's machine, which were both permanent cures. (Or intended so anyway). I'm just talking about a temporary on-off power dampener. Apart from every other villain apparently owning that technology (Magneto, Genosha, the Australia Tongs, etc) Wolverine also apparently switched her power off with the touch of a button, establishing the X-Men themselves have it as well.
You'd think they'd let her use it for some nooky.

Ooonly if they really don't mind that creepy twerp watching them as they do it... Unless they knock him out cold.

Guys, we need to visit Rogue's mind to find the answer. She still feels guilty about her criminal life and what she did to Carol Danvers to allow herself to have any happiness that isn't momentary. She sabotages every chance she gets to be powerless. She broke Dr. Agee's machine, she didn't stop the X-Men from reverting the High Evolutionary move or Loki from reverting them back to what they were, she asked Sage to jumpstart her powers again. Let's not forget what we just learned in Legacy. Xavier basically told her that she has to prove herself before getting her prize. That's why she can't control her powers, but Carol can. It's psychological.
I do believe, though, that she finally had enough. After reading that scene with Anna in the Outback, I'd say she's ready to do this. And she won't take no as an answer.

Excellent points. And a good bet this is exactly where Carey is heading, if the recent flashback revelation is an indication. My only problem is that it starts her trauma at Carol. Why wasn't she able to control her powers before that?
I suppose the argument could be made that Cody Robbins was an accident and that freaked her out so much it threw her off on her power from the start. (Later attempts with that Freddie kid didn't help, I'm sure. And let's ignore the title from that story being 'Her first and last', since he was clearly the second at best. )
Now....any guesses as to HOW she's going to do this? Just through some powerful Self-Dr-Philling?

Please do not get angry but why do you all think Rogue is the most unluckiest at love, yea she can't touch but she has had someone who loves her and has stuck by her. Plus they have had periods where they could touch and lived a happy life. All I am saying yes she has had it ruff because of her powers but at least she has had someone who has stayed in love with her no matter what even risked his own life and joined the bad guys just to save her because he does lover her.I don't feel bad for Rogue. THere is literally enough technology out there to negate her powers and so that she can hump like a rabbit. She chooses not to keep a sentinel collar or some other device around to negate her powers.
Bobby on the other hand, is tragic. I think Chuckles is up there too. But bobby takes the cake.
