Don't get me wrong, I love the myth/legend/spirit stuff, but Hellboy is full steam ahead when that stuff is a backdrop for battling real people using fancy machines and re-animated corpses and junk. Know what I mean?
Having said that, I still love all the new stuff.

Hmmm...I love it all, but I understand where you're coming from. Have you read the paperback novels? The God Machine has some great 'fancy machines', animated corpses that vomit gears and clockwork, etc. Plus it's got a great story.

God Machine is double plus good. I'd recommend it to anyone.
That being said... just a pin up at the end of a new issue with HB shooting a cyborg monkey head in a jar would satiate my need for violence against reanimated non-pedal primates.
In other words, we definitely need more of this...

BTW, I also love the new stories and wouldn’t change them for the world, but I would love a one-shot now and then of some of this action.

violence against apes > regular violence

"violence against apes > regular violence"
If we've learned anything from Planets of the Apes, then this is it.
In all seriousness, I think that's why I loved Screw On Head... so much mad-capped technology! Abe Lincon!

Hell...who doesn't? I say bring on the clockwork monkeys ruled by some head/brain in a mayonnaise jar! Hellboy at his pulp roots! The stuff of genius.

I get the feeling that Mike has gotten tired of Nazis and that Conquorer Worm was the send off for most of that story direction.
I have read in multiple interviews that he feels that "The Corpse" is his favorite story (with all the legends, fairy tales and old earth feel of it) and that is where he wants to take Hellboy.
Of course, we also have to remember that we are heading towards the end of the entire story with the apocolypse over the next 10-15 years... So the story arcs are going to start moving in that direction.
Hellboy's summoning is firmly grounded in nazis, but I think we are going to see less and less of the past and more and more of the mystic/fairy/old earth stuff in the future.
That being said, I love the panel in Conquorer Worm of the nazi machinery rusting away in a South American jungle somewhere! Very cool imagery!!

Ah well, we still have the BPRD!

Who mentioned Nazis?!
;)
Sure, they got the whole thing going but what's to stop these diabolical creations from moving onward of their own accord? Sentient cyborg simians armed to the teeth and poised to strike terror into the hearts of the World's citizens? Remote evil volcanic island lairs populated with pulsating brains housed in prewar canning jars sparking to a life brimming with malevolent intent? Who are you going to call? Hellboy, of course.
And not a swastika in sight!

agreed.
half ape half robots rule. Living heads in floating strawberry preserve jars rule.
I am officialy starting a petition. If not apes then some other animal, be it reptile or farm variety.
Sign on below if you think Mike should re-adopt this most juicy, pulpy of plot devices...

I agree. I love Hellboy and everything about the comics, books, etc., but it's the fighting that gets me all tingly inside. Hellboy is basically a big, red ape, and it's awesome seeing him grapple with something of similar size. Even better when the thing is much larger than him... and he can still actually bring it down. It seems the latest comics haven't had too much of that. :(

cyborg hippos would be cool or a cyborg cow.
So yes more animals that talk and assist those who plan on taking over the world.

Well, I feel I like it all. Both the pulpy fight action as the folklore, as the folklore fight action. All of it.
The least accesible stuff for me to soak up is the old god stuff, as (I feel) in recent BPRD. I like that too, but I don't puzzle out all the continuity or plottings behind it enough. Until I see discussions here and may reread.
I really like the blunt and bold no-nonsense in what will be pulp. However, for me real folklore and fairytales are also typically such. People shouldn't think of folklore as only fairies, flowers, elven ringers and dustridden hags, you know?
Folklore is made from boastful fantasies told among people by the fireside, very action-packed and very no-nonsense. The steampunk parts we may not appreciate fully in this day-and-age. But yeah, if told right it can and should be brutal, in-your-face at least. I feel mr. Mignola certainly made this more obvious and bless him for it.

Then how about...
Cyborg fairies dispatched to wreak havoc on the rural folk in outlying British townships by an ancient witch's head encased in a jar of vile, magical liquid? Oh, you know you want it.

Well the nazi/cyber-monkey/head-in-jar stuff is still rife in BPRD, so it's all good.

Sounds idyllic. Especially since I foresee complicatory meta-communicative delight: (head:) "Blairies! I blisblash y'all to bleac lalloc - no - vlavvot - no ...."
I want it .

God! I hope you are wrong. I personally love those episodes. Violence against Nazis and their evil henchmen, including their talking cyborg apes is the only truly justified violence. And I have a feeling there is always one more crazy old nazi professor hidden away plotting for world domination. I hope Hellboy continues to clean up in the south american jungles ( where most nazi masterminds aparently are in hiding. )

I just had to post a link to a thread on drawingboard.org called 'Wierd Science'. I posted a fan-pic of von Klempt there the other day and figured you folks might like it.
