Ok, Im sure this sounds a little stupid, but Ive never played an mmo and I have no idea what it entails. For instance if my friends are playing at the same time as me could I interact with them? Do I get to create my own character? The DCU is a great place to set any game and this one sounds cool, Im just a little fuzzy on the details of how you play one.

Well first there's the obligatory "you're in the wrong thread" rant. After that, yeah you get to interact with your friends. As for what the game entails I'm not sure. There are different types of MMO's out there. I'd probably look at City of Heroes for what this one will be like.

Yeah i'm kind of new to the whole MMO thing too. Do we have the chance to play as a classic DC character, or only as our created character?

Created characters only, but we'll get to interact with the DCU heroes and villains. There will also be set templates that you can choose if you're so inclined, so if you're looking to be a Batman-like character, you can start with a Batman template that will give you a similar skill set to the Caped Crusader's which you can advance through the game with without adjusting. Or you can make a completely original character, leaving all the choices up to you.
Also, Geoff Johns said in a recent interview that it would probably be easier for him the list the characters that aren't included in the game, because as far as he knew, they really weren't skimping in that area. You'll also get to choose between hero or villain, but from the sounds of it your decision will be based more upon the choices you make within the game world itself, as opposed to checking a box at the character creation screen that says "Good" or "Evil." I'm not positive on this one, but from everything I've read, that's definitely the vibe I get.
As for gameplay, it looks to be similar to City of Heroes', but it seems a bit more twitch-oriented. From what I understand, for PS3 users anyway, the four face buttons will be action buttons that you can assign separate powers to, powers which will be activated in real-time when pressed, whereas in CoH the button commands are on a queue. You'll have the obligatory "attack" and "jump" buttons that you'd find in most single player action games as well. You'll have access to your travel power at the start of the game (super speed, flight, etc.), and unlike in CoH, you'll be able to directly interact with many inanimate objects. If you're super strong for instance, you can pick up a car and throw it at a PC or NPC opponent, or if an ally or enemy creates a ball of ice, you'll be able to pick it up once they're done with it and use it as a projectile yourself.
It looks to be a very ambitious effort in the world of MMOs, and with the DC license behind it, it's a game I already can't wait to play.

Want to learn about a MMO then play one.
Try a free or cheap one first. That way you dont go out and buy a game, waste 50 bucks and turn over credit card info all come to find out you dont like those types of games.
This one is free and I played it myself, its the most basic MMO I ever saw but it did actually have others in it.

Or this one is also free, requires not a very large download and is pretty much as simple as a game gets.

Or if your willing to pay for a little more quality but dont want to pay a monthly subscription fee to play, the games in this series arent to bad and geared more to what a normal MMO is like and not quite as simplistic as the free ones. You only buy the game, after that its free to play as much as you like.

You might also want to wait a bit. Several very high profile MMO are coming out soon like Knights Of the Old Republic and DC Universe. And since MMOs don't end, hence their very addictive and competitive nature, you are only going to have time to get into one game so I'd wait if I were you.
If you have to play one, every MMo worth a damn will have a free online demo/trial period so try it before you buy it.
