Dirty Deeds!

"Dirty Deeds" is a series of threads where a discussion can be held about the morally questionable, or outright evil acts of characters in comics. It might be a discussion about times a hero crossed a moral line they shouldn't have, or a discussion of a villain's most horrific acts in their history, but the premise remains the same.

Where possible, a poll will be included to vote upon said character's "dirtiest deed".

Please do remember that there are no wrong answers, this is all a matter of opinion. Since everyone has a different set of morals, please try and respect differences in people's own beliefs.

We’re at our twenty-first edition of Dirty Deeds! And, this time out we’re going to look at a character who’s by and large, a hero, but has often shown he’s got his flaws… arrogance, being the foremost, of course. But hey, who wants perfect heroes, right? This edition of Dirty Deeds is with...

Roberto Da Costa… SUNSPOT!!!

So what is Sunspot's Dirtiest Deed?

- Using his powers against a rival futbol team during a soccer riot? (Marvel Graphic Novel #4)

- Slapping Karma right in the face? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #1)

- Tripping a Sentinel carelessly, so that it crashed through the roof of the Salem Center mall? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #2)

- Throwing a car that was about to explode clear… into a shack full of explosives, making the situation worse? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #4)

- Often going down by the pond on the mansion grounds because Xavier didn’t like navigating through the grass in his wheelchair? (revealed in X-Force (vol. 1) #19)

- Brawling with Cannonball in gladiatorial combat while tripping on drugs? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #9)

- Attempting to kill Selene by throwing her in a volcanic fissure? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #11)

- Arguing with his own father, driving Emmanuel DaCosta to join the Hellfire Club? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #12)

- Uprooting a tree and hitting a boulder like a baseball carelessly, without considering where it might land? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #21)

- Upon having first contact with the peaceful alien, Warlock, attempting to snap him in half? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #21)

- Attacking his trainer, Colossus, injuring him slightly, in a training room sparring session? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #22)

- Going to Harry’s Hideaway, a bar, despite being under age? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #23)

- Going berserk at Harry’s Hideaway, attacking Colossus and wrecking the place? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #23)

- Going into an Asgardian tavern, starting a bar fight, hitting on wenches, and partying with the Warriors Three while his teammates were being hunted by the Enchantress and the Darkchylde? (New Mutants Special Edition #1)

- Arguing with Wolverine about how he wanted to abandon Earth for Asgard? (Uncanny X-Men Annual #9)

- Telling off his headmaster, Magneto, and quitting the New Mutants? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #36)

- Overestimating his strength and nearly dropping a life-support model desperately needed to save refugee Morlocks who were wounded in the Mutant Massacre? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #46)

- Punching out his best friend, Cannonball, during a soccer game on Xavier’s grounds? (Fallen Angels #1)

- Running away from the Xavier estate after reading the files Xavier kept on him, then going hungry and deciding to rob a church? (Fallen Angels #1-2)

- Ignoring Magneto’s punishment that he was grounded and going to Dallas to battle Freedom Force? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #65)

- Proving to be quite the chauvinist when he told Dani Moonstar, “Dani, where are your finer feelings? Women are the weaker sex! Men should save them!”? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #67)

- Fighting with Cannonball over the affections of the alien, Gosamyr? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #69)

- Throwing a steel girder at his headmaster, Magneto and the Hellfire Club’s Inner Circle? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #75)

- Accepting the tutelage of the External, Gideon? ( New Mutants (vol. 1) #99)

- Undergoing experiments to increase his powers, that would end up helping create the mutant terrorist Reignfire? (X-Force (vol. 1) #13-14)

- Ignoring Cable’s orders to not approach Mimic, letting the villain match his powers, and cause a huge explosion of solar energy that jeopardized all of X-Force? (X-Force (vol. 1) #46)

- Hitchhiking with a couple of old hippies who strongly resembled Shaggy and Velma from Scooby Doo? (X-Force (vol. 1) #71)

- Making out with his best friend, Cannonball’s girlfriend, Meltdown… once while Sam was away, and a second time when he returned to X-Force? (X-Force (vol. 1) #75-76)

- Making a Faustian pact with Selene and Blackheart to join the Hellfire Club, in exchange for Julia Sandoval to be reincarnated? (X-Force (vol. 1) #98)

- Making out with Magma right in front of her ex-boyfriend, Empath? (X-Treme X-Men #35)

- Usurping the title of Lord Imperial of the Hellfire Club when Sebastian Shaw was injured by Donald Pierce, and not abdicating it back to him upon his recovery? ([I]Uncanny X-Men #454/I])

An original New Mutant, a warrior with X-Force, a player in the Hellfire Club, and now, a teacher of mutants… he’s been a lot of things, and a naughty little mutant is amongst them! Vote now for what you think is the worst of Sunspot’s Dirty Deeds!

Slapping a certain Vietnamese lesbian is truly his dirtiest deed.

Admittedly, there is some bias, what with having the out-of-context picture included.

But I mean, he made a deal with Selene and Blackheart!

He started nailing his best friend's girl!

He was underage drinking, and getting in barfights!

He started soccer riots!

Trouble follows Roberto, to be sure.

Buh´ The drinking underage I can understand (Who hasnt?)... And I have heard that in the states you need to waiy until you are 21... intolerable !!

The deal was for Juliana´s sake, so she could go from "dead" to "in eternal comic Limbo"

I would say hooking up with Tabitha right in front of Sam duh!

Okay, underage drinking? Fine.

But everytime he was underage in a bar, he went and got in a fight with some poor sap. The Asgardian time, he was trying to sleep with wenches, and then showed off by picking up Volstagg.

Really, Sunspot is a poster child for why underage drinking is just wrong. He's not helping anyone's case.

I also voted other for Doug's sake. Roberto just seemed to hate Doug so much.

All I know is that bad things happen when Roberto DaCosta is near either:

a) a soccer ball (there even was one issue X-Force #78-79, I think, where he played a pickup game at a school where Skids was attending, and Reignfire showed up after the game and fried this innocent teammate of his)
b) your girlfriend
c) booze

It's an interesting pattern.

But drinking underage sleeping with wenches and picking up Volstagg are part of his LCH!! (Latino Cultural Heritage) It is what we do !! You can not strip us of that !!

(Actually, the picking up of Volstagg you can let out)

In his defense, he did back out before he actually robbed the place. He knocked in the door, though. Breaking and entering with intent to rob, is more like it.

Still, his whole exit from Xavier's in Fallen Angels #1 after punching out Cannonball over a soccer game, then reading through Xavier's files about him in Magneto/Xavier's office before running away, then getting too hungry on the street and doing this... Roberto doesn't have a halo, to be sure.

Man, Roberto had Karma "walking into doors" all over the Xavier institute. No wonder she ran away with the Shadow King and tried to eat her sorrows away, only to one day realize that only women should be allowed to touch her, because men only do so with abuse as their intent.

Still, just thought I'd point out, 'Berto's other talked about deed...

and about the "look, i'm 14" thing... in graphic novel and on, he was said to be 14... before he joined new mutants. then near the beyonder storyline when he ran away or something, the caption said he was a 13 year old boy.... way to de-age him and make him the youngest member of the team when he's clearly not! ugghhh it goes rahne, illyanna, cypher, sunspot, magma, moonstar, cannonball, karma. pretty certain at least.

- Overestimating his strength and nearly dropping a life-support model desperately needed to save refugee Morlocks who were wounded in the Mutant Massacre? (New Mutants (vol. 1) #46)

Wasn't that one just a case of him running out of power at a bad time because he hadn't recharged in a while? Can't really blame him for that one.

Now, you could certainly make a case for kicking over a table of sandwiches Rahne was making for the injured Morlocks (3 pages later). As far as dirty deeds go, that's probably the second worst (most of these aren't that bad, truth be told, but a couple of them are really lame on his part). First would be getting between Tabitha and Sam.
