I've heard a couple of their songs and think they could be an interesting listen.

My question is, which album would be a better starting point: It Still Moves or Z?

I think you mean It Still Moves.
As for you question, I'd say either At Dawn or It Still Moves. Z is good, but Dawn and Moves are better.
Evil Urges their newest one, is just kinda so-so. There's a lot of different stuff on Urges not all of it works, but it's interesting to see them evolve out of southern-flavored indie rock into other stuff.

Awesome.

Anyone have any other thoughts?

Great, great band. I'm really diggin' the new album, but for me, "Heartbreakin' Man" is still their best tune.

I like their earlier bathed in reverb albums better than their later if Wilco can do it so can we records.

I like "Heartbreakin' Man" (from The Tennessee Fire) an awful lot, but I absolutely adore "Golden" (from It Still Moves).

Well, I'm not going to be much help in this thread since I've only heard a few of their songs. Really, really liked what I heard though and they're definitelty on the list of new(ish) artists I want to get CDs of. After Neko Case though, of course.

Been going through It Still Moves. It's very good. They have a quaint sound. Sometimes I feel like I'm listening to a more sophisticated America (who played some of my favorite 1970s pop/rock songs). I got my father into it, and he's usually very stubborn about giving newer music a chance.

My only complaint is some of their songs are fucking long, but they can jam relatively well.

Hey, I just saw these guys last week at the Marquee. No opening band. Just MMJ, which was awesome. They played for two and a half hours. At Bonaroo, they play epic shows that last three hours! So yeah, their songs are longish on record, live they really work.

I downloaded 'At Dawn' because of this thread. Only listened to it a couple times so far, but I like it. Similar sound in some ways to two other newish bands I like, Fleet Foxes and Panda Bear.
