I've been looking around but cant quite find an answer to this, but which titles would you say is necessary for secret invasion? From the little bits I've been picking up here and there, I'm guessing New & Might Avengers, but is there any else that might be necessary to get the story?

I've been picking up the SI-books but not read them as I'm collecting New Avengers in TPB-form and I'm a bit reluctant to buying loose issues of it cause of that. So I'm just a bit annoyed that they will release a hardback of them and then wait around longer for the the trade. This is also the reason Why I've been waiting with reading up on SI.

Then you'd pretty much be guessing right.

I've read just about everything SI related. So far New Avengers and Mighty Avengers have had quite a bit of back story on Nick Fury, the skrull "replacements", skrull history, and even a few reveals that happened in those before they happened in the regular SI series itself.

Pretty much EVERY thing else (correct me if I've missed something) has just been characters reacting to the Invasion itself (IE fighting skrulls). Not to say that some of those aren't worth your time or good quality superhero stories on their own.

But really when it comes down to it SI could definitely still be enjoyed completely on it's own. So far anyways. Here's to hoping they don't totally shank the ending.

Oh! If there's one skrull-fighting-invasion-reaction tie-in that you should definitely check out though it's Jason Aaron's Black Panther. It's just one bad-ass superhero comic.

Just the main book, Mighty and New.

From there you ask your self questions:

Do I like character x? If then, check out their tie ins. Am I curious to know more about the Skrull religious stuff? Then you check out Incredible Hercules. Do I want to know about how the Skrulls placed themselves in the Initiative? You check Initiative.

I agree with Flloyd though, Black Panther for SI is like Braveheart on MGH.

Thanks, then I'll get my hands on mighty and new avengers, and perhaps the Black Panther one, I like that character though haven't read much with him.
Just hope it dont take too long for them to be collected in trades.

Mighty and New Avengers fill in backstory and cover a some tangents, but I wouldn't really call them required reading by any stretch of the imagination.

If you don't mind a few dangling plot threads, the main mini-series should suffice.

Captain Britain & M.I.13 has been very good, Deadpool is shaping up nicely too.
I can't comment on any of the Bendis written books or the other tie-ins because I haven't read them and I have no intention of doing so either.

The Avengers books have been good tie-ins (with the exception of the initiative). X-Men, Black Panther, and Inhumans have been quite good as well.

OH!

It should definitely be noted that the last issue of the Illuminati limited series could pretty much have been the 1st issue of Secret Invasion.

I agree with New and Mighty Avengers. I've picked up a few tie-ins, but only for characters or teams that I'm rabid about. I liked the first part of Thor SI, and the 2nd issue is due this week (I think). If ya like Thor, I'd recommend it.

As others have said, NA and MA are probably the essential tie ins.

I'm almost tempted to say Avengers: Initiaitve, especially since the Queen shows up at Camp Hammmond in the next issue. But I doubt we'll see anything important to the main story.

Avengers:Initiative is pretty necessary, and Incredible Hercules was just a great story, probably my favourite tie in.

That said, the book is a bit more... distributed, shall we say, than the previous crossovers. The last couple of books, you literally didn't need to read anything other than the main mini to really get the story. SI, while you don't need to need to read the Avengers tie-ins, they are still a lot more tied into the main plot than any of the Civil War or Planet Hulk books.

Also, not necessary, but SI: Thor and SI: Inhumans have been pretty kick ass so far. And SI: Inhumans is probably going to be somewhat necessary for the next crossover.

I'm just drawing a line between highly recommended and required.

Everyone is pretty much on the money about New and Mighty Avengers. I wouldn't say any of the tie-ins are actually necessary, but New and Mighty are the closest thing to it.

I think Secret Invasion is doing really well on the tie-ins. I'd say the worst of them are really just pretty mediocre.

Now, as far as what I would RECOMMEND for a complete Secret Invasion experience:

Secret Invasion (duh)
Black Panther (not perfect, but sets the war mood big time)
Captain Britain and MI:13 (painfully cornball at the end, but overall great)
Incredible Hercules (great to read more about the Skrull's religion)
Mighty & New Avengers (some good "behind the scenes" of the build-up)
Secret Invasion: Front Line (see the big battle from the little people getting crushed)
Secret Invasion: Inhumans (only one really focusing on one of the abductions so far)

There are some other tie-ins I've personally liked, but these are the ones I'd recommend for an all-around good SI experience. Others are kind of mediocre or they're good but not really that connected/important to the event.

My list is similar:

Secret Invasion
Secret Invasion: Fantastic Four
Secret Invasion: Inhumans
Secret Invasion: Thor
Secret Invasion: X-Men
Black Panther
Captain Britain and MI:13
Incredible Hercules
Mighty Avengers
New Avengers

So with those it covers just about every area of the invasion with the Savage Land, Thunderbolts Mountain, Wakanda, England, Dimensional planes, the Negative Zone, New York, The Moon, Asgard (Oklahoma), and San Francisco.

I would just buy the trade when it comes out and it will be essential enough. I wan't reading comics when House of M came out, but I managed to read the trade and feel like I'd missed nothing...mostly because if you don't know what you missed it's not a big deal.

I would NOT advise getting Secret Invasion: Amazing Spider Man. Aside from the fact that Spidey's not even in this thing, I couldn't find anything in it worth "buying". I pretty much agree with everyone else.

agreed

Would like to add that truly the main SI is independant, yeah some othe other tie-ins add decent stuff but the story happens in the SI main line.
Would buy that if i wanted to know what is going on and then after that, buy different tie-ins depending on what truly interests you.
Want to know the Skrull side of the story? buy the New Avenger tie-ins.
Want to know what happened with specific Avengers and when they got replaced? go grab Mighty Avengers.

so on.
