Sonic and the Black Knight is an upcoming title within the Sonic the Hedgehog series, to be released exclusively on Wii as the second entry in the Storybook series, following on from Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Set in the world of King Arthur, the game combines Sonic's trademark speed with a new swordfighting system, making use of the Wii Remote's motion-sensing functionality.

Plot
A sorceress named Merlina summons Sonic to help free the mystical realm of King Arthur, where King Arthur has been corrupted and is now ruling the realm as the tyrannical Black Knight. Sonic's speed alone will not end The Black Knight's reign, so he must take up the sword in order to break King Arthur's curse and save the kingdom.

Characters
Sonic is the main playable character. While Knuckles, and Shadow are playable characters, they will be optional. It is unknown right now if other characters will be playable. Other non-playable characters include King Arthur (the Black Knight), Merlina, and Calibur. Like Ali Baba and Sinbad in Secret Rings, Sonic's friends will assume Arthurian personas in the game.

Gameplay
Gameplay for Sonic and the Black Knight differs from traditional games in the Sonic series by mixing in the new element of swordplay, along with the traditional Sonic platforming and speed. Swordplay is implemented through the Wii Remote and hence, similar to Sonic and the Secret Rings, however players will no longer control Sonic's movement on rails as the team say they have learned from the biggest criticisms about it. The gameplay will mainly be 3D, but occasionally the camera will shift to a side-scrolling perspective for traditional 2D gameplay.

Swordplay will be implemented so that players can slice through enemies without slowing down, but when faced with more formidable enemies, players will engage in advanced swordsplay, able to thrust, parry, and even perform a buzz-saw maneuver mid-jump. The sword will not be only used for combat; players may thrust it through a wall while falling to slow their descent.

The stages will feature civilians that the player can choose to help or smite; these actions and the player's deeds will be judged at the end of each stage, updating the player's "knight ranking" accordingly. By helping out grateful citizens, players will be able to purchase new items from them, acquiring items such as gauntlets, magical tomes, and new swords. There will be about two hundred items in the game, some of which can be gained by opening treasure chests in the stages. An online mode will allow treasures to be traded.

The game changes the traditional level items, such as springs and speed pads, into "elements". These elements look similar to Chao heads, and come in varying colors; red elements will be used as springs, yellow elements will be used as speed boosts, and purple elements will be used to fill up the "special gauge". This gauge, replacing the previous entry's "soul gauge", is filled by defeating enemies, and is used to unleash a powerful combination attack.[4] Additionally, instead of the rails from previous games, players will fire a ballista and then grind across its rope.

The mission-based system from Sonic and the Secret Rings will also return, but the missions will be easier to complete. Each stage will consist of multiple missions which feature different stipulations. The skill system from the aforementioned game also returns, but will be reviewed to adjust any problems that were present in that game; the skill system is also being designed so as not to interfere with the game's tempo.

-WikiThis is new. It takes the best elements from secret rings, and unleashed, and smashes it all into one game? And it adds swordfighting? And playing as any other character than sonic is completely optional?

I'm actually kind of excited for this. What are your thoughts on this?

My thoughts?
Giving sonic a sword is the solution to how crap this series has become?

Well.... obviously?

Sounds like the dumbest idea for a game ever...

Wow... just... wow.

I'd say Mr. Mark Hamill can sum up my reaction to this game. Mark?

Mark Hamill: It'd be funny if it weren't so pathetic. Oh what the heck, I'll laugh anyway. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lb8fWUUXeKM)

This is one of the few times I've actually laughed derisively at the mere idea of a game. Oh well, it can't be worse than Shadow the Hedgehog.

...

Now that I've said that, it'll be so horrible that it will supplant Superman 64 as the worst game of all time.

I really wish they'd just stop making Sonic Games... the 2D ones were (mostly) great... Sonic Adventure was good for its time... hell, even SA2 was fun, I guess. The ones after SA2, though... ugh.

Here we have a char whose appeal was that he was the quickest friggin thing on screen.
Lets give him a sword and armor and have fights against dark knights.

WHERE THE HELL DOES THAT MAKE SENSE??

I wanted to say that yesterday but the first poster seemed so enthusiastic about it I didn't want to hurt his feelings.

Your Mark Hammil vid did not work for some reason.

I would agree on the 2D comment about sonic. Those games were great. I just don't think the platform lends itself well to a 3D environment like Mario. Maybe if the first game had been as outstanding as Mario 64 we'd be having this discussion about Mario instead. I just think Sonic died when the gaming systems evolved.

What we do need is a good remake of the games. One where you can save your performance. I hated how in Sonics Mega Collection if you lost you started over. I just don't have three or four hours to commit to a game like I used to.

Oh no! A combat system! This series is ruined!

The platforming and speed is still present, though everyone seems to have skimmed over that fact. Since Sonic Unleashed and Chronicles look awesome, I'll wait before I pass judgement on this.

Meh, it was just a video of Mark Hamill's Joker laugh... for about four and a half minutes. It sort of fit because... well... I DID laugh all nutty-like when I heard about this. Not in a good way, either.

Since the game hasn't been released, I can't really say it'll definitely suck, of course. However, based upon Sonic Team's rather dismal track record since Sonic Heroes, I feel that there's a better chance of it being a bad game than a good game.

Sonic Chronicles might be good, though. Of course, that game is being developed by Bioware instead of Sonic Team, which does make me more optimistic about that entry.

Let me have my dreams!

God forbid they should try to do something different. How many more Sonic games are you willing to play that involve just holding to the right on the D-pad (or up, in the 3D versions) and busting X-games tricks?

This sounds like it could be fun, actually, slicing through stuff without slowing down. It says they removed the 'on-rails' gameplay from Secret Rings, so that's a step in the right direction.

It still makes more sense than Shadow carrying guns and riding a motorcycle despite the fact that he shoots friggin' energy blasts and is as fast as Sonic.

The series has been ruined, i trust a combat system fixing it not at all.
Heres hoping they add one of those press the button mini games everyone is so found of since god of war.
