Hi all
I am very interested in reading the crisis on infinite Earth story and the infinite crisis stuff but I don’t know where to start.
I have an okay knowledge of the DC universe
The real problem is that I’m not sure which issues or collections I should pick up to fully enjoy these story lines. I know there are a ton of cross-overs but which ones are the most essential.
thanks

For Crisis on Infinite Earths, just read the trade itself. All you need to know is that a lot of the characters you know as sharing a universe used to be in different universes.
For Infinite Crisis...that's trickier. You can probably jump straight in after COIE, but if you want the nuances, you may want to look at the following trades: JLA: Crisis of Conscience, Superman: Sacrifice, The OMAC Project, Villains United, Day of Vengeance, Rann/Thanagar War, and Infinite Crisis Companion.
(I think "Infinite Crisis" referred to the number of tie-ins...)

52 spins out of events from Infinite Crisis, but it really stands on it's own.
The final pages of Infinite Crisis are a proper 'The End'.

Well, here is a complete list of all the main stories that tie into the Crisis stories. I'll put an asterik by the most important.
"JLA/JSA: Crisis On Multiple Earths" volumes 1-4
"Crisis On Infinite Earths" *
"Identity Crisis" *
"Adam Strange: Planet Heist"
"The OMAC Project"/"Sacrifice" *
"The Return Of Donna Troy"
"Villains United" *
"Day Of Judgment" *
"Rann/Thanagar War"
"JLA: Crisis Of Conscience" *
"Infinite Crisis" *
"Infinite Crisis: Companion" *
"Superman: Infinite Crisis" *
"52" volumes one through four. *
"Countdown To Final Crisis" volumes 1-4 *
"Death Of The New Gods"
"Countdown: Arena"
"Countdown: The Search For Ray Palmer"

IMO I would read COIE, Identity Crisis, JLA: Crisis of Conscience, Infinite Crisis/Superman: Infinite Crisis, 52, and then go into Final Crisis.

"Countdown: The Search For Ray Palmer"
"Salvation Run"
"Countdown Presents: Lord Havok And The Extremists"
"Countdown To Mystery"
You can safely skip this collection of some of the worst comics DC ever printed, and not miss a thing. [Countdown To Mystery is quite good, actually, but it has zero to do with any Crisis, it's just Gerber's Dr. Fate book retitled.]

Especially since all of that is supposedly ignored anyway. No need to confuse him even more.

The original poster might actually like some of those stories. I've been reading "Countdown To Final Crisis" in trade form, since I couldn't afford it weekly. I've quite enjoyed it. You might not have, but that doesn't mean everyone shares our opinions.
At the very least the poster should read "Countdown To Final Crisis", out of all the Countdown books.

I assume final crisis is a conclusion
until Final Crisis 2 hits in summer 2010

Are you recommending CD to FC before you have finished it?

Yes. I know the details of the story without having read the whole thing. But from what I've read of the spoilers and the first two volumes, it really doesn't read as bad as a lot of people have said.

In some stories, lots of stuff happens, and a skillful writers then has it all come together in the end and uses the various plot threads to build a satisfying conclusion.
And in some stories, lots of stuff happens, just to fill pages week in, week out. Almost nothing of it matters one whit to the story and it's conclusion, whole plot strands turn out to be completely and utterly inconsequential despite it having dominated most of the story, which makes one wonder why you the writer bothered to put them in in the first place.
Guess which one Countdown To Final Crisis is.

The third one, which you didn't describe, because it was so much of a car wreck that it would be both unethical and immortal for you to even start to discuss it?
