Has Marvel ever published a non-canon tale where the top heroes and villains swap roles? As in the Avengers and co are evil villains, with Doc Doom and co the heroes trying to stop them. I know this could be terrible, but if written correctly and with the right choices of characters, it could be a good fun one off.

You can sort of argue that TBolts chasing after Spider-Man is kind of a role reversal. But you're probably asking for some sort of alternate dark mirror universe type story... and I can't think of one off the top of my head.

There was a 3 issue story awhile back in the original New Warriors run where the Avengers were the bad guys in an alternate reality.

Avengers Forever pitted good Avengers vs bad Avengers

I don't seem to recall any where the bad guys were the heroes.

Doc Iron vs. the Frightful Four in an issue of Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four springs to mind, although that was only visited in passing.

I'd imagine there's a few more in the What If? series.

There was an old FF story where the Overmind took control of Reed Richards, and Doom ended up teaming up with the rest of the FF to stop them.

And in Gruenwalds Squadron Supreme, Nighthawk does assemble a team made up largely of villains to fight the Squadron when they take over the world.

Yeah, I've only just got back to reading Marvel stuff, after a while of only checking DC characters. I was imagining a kind of four part Elseworlds style tale.

You might want to check out the Age of Apocalypse story arc in the X-Men. Lot of role reversal going on there.

That was a really interesting story since it was largely about race. It was the setup from the movie "White Man's Burden" and riffs on Days of Futures Past.

In it the Sphinx, a classic Nova villain, opens up a world where Moses never led the exodus and Egypt. Egypt stays a world power and America is largely colonized by Egypt and the rest of Africa.

So the Avengers are Captain Assyria (who is black), Iron Man (who is black), Horus (Egyptian god of thunder?) Storm, Monica Rambeau (I'm not sure what her codename was) and token white guy, Nova. They aren't necessarily bad guys. They are tools of an opressive regime led by the female Sphinx. In the story they battle Magneto (still white) and his MLF.

It would be but you can guess how it ends: they both die and get resurrected...

Horus (Egyptian god of thunder?)

Dunno about the comics, but Horus was the Egyptian Sun God (although there's some war god stuff thrown in too for good measure).

The thing about that story was that for me I didn't really see the Avengers as evil. I'd like to think of them more as misguided(?). It was more like they were defending their way of life and the social strata of their culture.

Ok, seeing as how there doesn't seem to have been such a story, who would you like to see on each side?
