IMMORTAL IRON FIST #21
Written by DUANE SWIERCZYNSKI
Pencils by TRAVEL FOREMAN
Cover by JUAN DOE
Danny Rand was not the first Immortal Iron Fist...and he won’t be the last! The year – 3099. The place – a distant planet first colonized a millennium ago by the People’s Republic of China. Now, a humanity oppressed by a totalitarian technological tyrant has just one hope for salvation – the kung-fu freedom-fighting of the Immortal Iron Fist! But his coming is nothing more than a prophecy and a silent prayer...and even if the Iron Fist does arrive, he must first defeat the most powerful weapon the evil robot empire has...Robo Fat-Cobra! Hot off the heels of Duane Swierczynski and Travel Foreman’s rip-roaring “MORTAL IRON FIST” arc comes an all-new look at the future legacy of the Immortal Iron Fist...with a jaw-dropping cover by Juan Doe!
32 PGS./Rated T+ ...$2.99
Can't wait for this. Since launch it has been the most original and exciting title being published by the big two. Even the change in writing team hasn't seen a drop in quality. The ideas just keep coming.

I was never a big fan either, but the writers have taken a character who was b-list at best and shown it's possible to create a must read title.

I'm a big fan of the character and the title but I'm really not sure if that story is going to work for me. We'll see how they pull it off but Iron Fist in the future just doesn't have a good ring to me.

I'm two issues into the new creative's run and it's really, really good. I'm in it for the long haul.
Still wish Fraction, Bru, and Aja could make a return, but they are gone and they ain't coming back.
Long live Duane and Travel.

I like the others of the gang as well, like Fat Cobra and Bride of the Nine Spiders.

Now this is the kind of story that Duane S. had to write in order to break free from the shadow of his predecessors on the book. I can't wait to read it, the solicitation sounds brilliant.

I love how the boards were dead-set against Duane taking over the book, but he seems to be winning fans. Good to hear. This arc also sounds fantastic, so count me in.

I'll admit I reacted just like everyone else did at first, panic. Iron fist osnmt avorite marvel book and one of my favorite characters, all due to matt we and aja's amazing run on the title. Duane and travel have proven themselves quite capable of taking the reigns of this title. I can't wait I see a tale of a future iron fist.
And who doesn't want to see robot fat cobra? Fools, that's who.
A message to the OP: this thread should be renamed"The Immortal Iron Fist: Great comic or THE greatest comic?

I guess it depends on how the current arc ends, but I wonder if they're going to "pull a Captain America" and just have someone else take up the Iron Fist mantle when they eventually re-focus on "present day" stories. I can't say the solicits don't interest me, but I'm just wondering if they're actually going to have a "primary Iron Fist" or are they just going to focus on new Iron Fists for each new arc.

Ummm.... what?
The main Iron Fist is Danny Rand. This story is just a one-shot, like the "Past Iron Fist" One shots we've had in the past, except Duane is putting a spin on it and showing "Future Iron Fists." I fully expect Danny to be Iron Fist in the arc following this issue, unless he is actually killed in either this book, or in Secret Invasion, which I very much doubt (if marvel has any sense at all).
I cant say I was too thrilled about this when I first saw it, future stories rarely ever impress me, save for the brilliance that is Peter David's Spider-Man 2099. But it does look promising, I just can't help but feel that there are still many more stories about Past Iron Fists that could be told first.

Hmmm, didn't notice it was a one-shot. Anyway, assuming Danny survives, I'll actually be a little bit disappointed. Not because Danny lives (b/c I like him and want to keep reading about him), but b/c of the way they framed the story by introducing a possible future. I know I should be used to it now after having read comics for about a decade, but that sort of "stunt" always feels hollow.

Yep thats one of my biggest problems as well, there is no future story that seemingly occurs in the 616 that isn't retconned to another parallel universe. For example the 2099 series of books. Also Batman Beyond will probably never step foot inside an issue of either Batman or Detective, despite him being an awesome character.

I'm leaning towards your sentiments. I also don't have too much interest in stories that deal with legacies in the future, save for Batman Beyond. Indeed, when I first read the solicitation, it reminded me of the Phantom 2040 series, which wasn't one of my cartoons growing up. Furthermore, as someone who's a student of ancient history, I usually find interest in the past rather than looking forward to the future. And I guess I'll go against the grain and say that a Robot Fat Cobra really isn't too appealing.
However, thinking it over some more and reading some of the comments already posted, I'm beginning to warm up to this issue. On a cursory glance, the story seems to be based off of very relevant and topical ideas, most notably that China currently is very interested in space exploration. Thus, it colonizing a distant world sometime in the future is within the realm of possibility. Also, I admire Swiernyczki's creativity. Exploring future Iron Fists and futuristic worlds is something that could not be done in the confines of the past. I'll certainly be looking for this issue as it comes out.
