Here are some fine trades that will get you some of the best that Marvel has to offer:
Daredevil: Born Again TPB
Marvels TPB
New X-Men Vol. 1 (oversized TPB)
Runaways Vol. 1 HC
The Punisher MAX Vol. 1 TPB
What, exactly, are you looking for? Superhero stuff or no?

Also if you dig the big superhero crossover/team-up stuff you'd probably really enjoy the 1st Secret Wars and Infinity Gauntlet.
Secret Wars was pretty much my introduction to the Marvel Universe as a whole cohesive universe outside of the (then) big three (Hulk, Cap, Spidey) and I fell in love.

Fight Man (One-shot)
Deadpool #11
I like these because they show how great Marvel can be when everything's not so serious.
I always though Mark Gruenwald's Squadron Supreme was one of the greatest marvel stories of all time... but it's not exactly mainstream marvel guys, so that may not be what you're looking for.

Totally in agreement with Deadpool #11, just love Blind Al's Aunt May impersonation and "Peter Parker" actually being a badass for the first time!
On a serious note however, my favourite Marvel comic of all time is Incredible Hulk #420, written by Peter David. The issue was poignant, humourous and tackled a fairly taboo subject: AIDS.
Hulk's dilemma over whether or not to transfuse his blood into his dying friend was groundbreaking and ultimately heartbreaking.
There aren't many writers whom would even attempt to tackle such an issue in a comic book in the '90s but Peter David did, and he did it exceedingly well in my honest opinion.

My take on this thread is that it's what you personally feel to be your favourite Marvel story.
So if you feel that Squadron Supreme is your favourite then it doesn't matter if it's mainstream or not, it's still appropriate.
