Hello,

Have there been many 'year one' type stories done in the modern era (post 1st Crisis) for Alan Scott or Jay Garrick?

I'm specifically wondering if someone has done a modern story featuring the first time that Alan Scott/Green Lantern ever went up against Solomon Grundy? I know Ed Brubaker did the Alan Scott/GL team up with Batman, but I was wondering of other stories out there.

I've been a big fan of Sandman Mystery Theatre, even though it is kind of not considered a part of regular DC continuity (even though it probably could be) and was wondering of other good modern stories showing the JSA guys in their 'prime' or when they got started.

I know if I was DC, I think my big idea for a cool weekly series would be one called something called like '1939' and have it have all of the origins of the JSA members with the series building up to the origin of the JSA and the start of WWII. I'd definitely like to see some modern told stories with Alan Scott in Gotham, Jay Garrick/the Flash and Wildcat when they were young.

I like All Star Squadron and all, but more solo stories or just how they all first got together.

This answer isn't likely to be of any help to you since I'm sure you're already familar with it, but James Robinson's Starman series should hold some interest if you're not too strict about the first year deadline. I'm sure there's stuff about Ted Knight's origins as well as that of his enemies (namely The Shade and possibly The Mist). While not an early adventure of The Flash and Green Lantern, there is a pivotal event in which the two take on Rag Doll. Sorry for being so vague - I haven't read a lot of the series - but like I said, there's likely to be something there though it's not a perfect answer.

I know even less about the Secret Origins series which ran from about 1986-1990 but unless they're direct retellings of early Flash, Wildcat, Green Lantern, etc stories, there might be something there as well.

Oh, and there's an issue of Batman: Shadow of the Bat (either issue 36 or 37 I think) in which Batman faces Solomon Grundy. It's modern story, but there's a flashback to Grundy's origin. Him getting murdered and tossed in the swamp and then vowing to return. It's a two-page recap if that, but thought I'd mention it.

Well, for Alan and Grundy did have a somewhat "Year One" story. It took place in Superman #676 and is set early in Superman's career. He teams up with Alan to fight Grundy. It's more of a Superman story than a Green Lantern one. But stories that took place during the 40's that was a "Year One" story, there haven't been. Not to my knowledge. The Secret Origins books would be one venue to look. Otherwise, I think DC has just left the Golden Age stories alone.
