I first saw Ruggero Deodato's 1980 "classic" just recently and I KNOW that if Hollywood plans on a remake, they have no chance in hell of getting away with even a snippet of what the original exposed me to. Cannibal Holocaust for me was a near mind-bending experience full of gore (ironically the easiest thing to stomach), rape, animal killings (the real kind), and nutty journalists. I was never the same again soon after I finished it. I will say though that in spite of all that, at least there was a lesson to be learned from it concerning human nature, one that's easy to figure out by the end if you can survive the celluloid slaughter and sadism bombarding your vision. As for the remake, I think Mel Gibson would be PERFECT as director. He has no problem depicting tribesmen as bloodthirsty savages and has a gore fetish that he can easily apply to epic natural environments. Best of all, he can keep all of that viscerality just barely within the limits of what the MPAA will allow. Anyways, discuss these films here and have fun.

The original ran at midnight at the Nuart, here in LA about 4 years ago. One of the cast members was there to introduce it, and it's one of the few times a film has been intro'd with the phrase, "you will see me naked." The film is actually pretty good, and I was surprised how well it holds up. It still has some social relevance as well.

Are they really doing a remake? How? Is Cannibal Ferox next in line?

You know, for a trashy Italian gore pic with real animal cruelty, I'm surprised that Cannibal Holocaust was actually good, and surprisingly so for people who can stomach the tough parts.
