The reason I ask this here is because I just finished reading Watchmen and the whole little side story told by the kid reading a pirate comic caught my interest.
Just such a thing exist?

I've always been enamored with that story, probably more than with Watchmen itself. I've never managed to find anything quite like it out there, unfortunately. Just goes to show that Moore is writing in the wrong genre.

???
Those godawful pirate bits nearly make the Watchmen unreadable.
Also, I saw some good pirate storiesone as backups in a few Giant-Size Marvel comics. I can't remember which off hand, but it my have been Man-Thing.
Not sure about the actual series that the story's characters came from (Scion), but in Crossgen Chronicles #2, there's a nice Pirate-y kinda story written by Ron Marz and beautifully, beautifully drawn by George Perez.
Loved Tales of the Black Freighter by the way. You might wanna check out the reconstruction (http://www.crinklink.com/blackfreighter/index.html).

I'm rather fond of a "global manga" series called Destiny's Hand.

Can't think of any DC off the top of my head, but a couple come to mind.
Ugh. I hate the global manga term, but Becky Cloonan has an amazing series from TokyoPop called East Coast Rising. Of course I use the term series loosely. TokyoPop crapped on their 'OEL manga' creators and canceled most of the books. Cloonan was told to condense it down to two books instead of three. No clue when volume 2 is coming out now. This is how you treat an Eisner Nominee?!
Also, Sea of Red by Rick Remainder over at image was pretty good. Vampire pirates. Pretty grim and reminds me of black freighter.

There's Ted Naifeh's charming Polly and the Pirates, which you should particularly enjoy if you're familiar with his Courtney Crumrin series. (And if you're not, you absolutely should be.)

There's Redbeard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redbeard_(comics)).
The artist on many of the issues, Jijé, actually redrew some Joe Shuster drawn Superman stories for the French market from 1939 to 1945, when the American pages could not reach the Publisher because of the war!

El Cazador was great, but for some reason Crossgen had to die. Since then, few good pirate books have come out. I've seen a solicitation for a comic involving Jean Lafitte and the Texas Revolution, but it isn't in my LCS. I've heard that there's a 'pirates vs. ninjas' book either in the works or out in the indie realm, but aside from that, not so sure. Oh, and Elephantmen had a great pirate-themed issue awhile back. I'd buy a good pirate ongoing, if it were offered.
