So in case you hadn't heard, Spore is equipped with SecuRom 7, and has some fairly nasty applied DRM, where the game can only be installed three times, and requires regular internet updates to keep it running.
On the other hand, pirates have already cracked the DRM, meaning people obtaining the game illegally have none of these issues.
Nothing like punishing paying customers while incentivizing piracy, is there?

That's the irony, that these attempts to curb piracy serve only to drive away paying customers.
Publishers act like piracy = lost revenue when the vast majority of people pirating a game would never have bought it anyway.
Software piracy is just a fact of life. If publishers could finally just accept that there's nothing they can do about it and focus on pleasing the paying customers, everyone would be much happier.

The DRM is keeping me from playing the game. I bought a copy, installed it, and it won't launch. The only way around it is to replace the exe with a cracked one. However, doing this will disable all the online functions, like streaming other people's creations into your world...a huge part of the game's experience.

I've actually had no problem whatsoever with the game so far.
I go online every now and again to download some content, go offline, then carry on playing.
Seems to work fine for me...

It only requires internet authentication when you install, but the three install limit sucks.

This is why I don't bother with PC gaming anymore.
