View Full Version : Simple Question, who is your favourite DC superhero?

I was thinking about this yesterday and wondered what are peoples' favourite superheros? For me, though I read alot of Batman, it has to be Atom Smasher. Dont ask me why, but ever since I saw him grow into a giant and grab Kobras plane and looked so pissed off I thought he was awesome.
So what about you guys?

Alan Scott
Hal Jordan (I still his first words after returning to life in Rebirth.)
I also like Captain Atom before he went cuckoo and turned into Monarch.

I've got to stick with Superman. He gets a lot of hate these days, it seems, but c'mon, he's Superman.
Wally West is up there too. We'll see how Johns does in making me care about Barry.
Batman. He's not just my favorite DC superhero, he's one of my favorite comics characters, period.
Joe Acro

The Flash. Wally is my favorite comic book character overall, not just in DC. There's just so much to like about him.

It's hands down the Batman. He's my kind of pain in the ass.
Followed by Green Lantern (almost any of them really, it's the concept I've always been in love with) and Hawkman.

You'd think it's a simple question, but for me it can get complicated.
My favorite post-IC hero is The Atom (Ryan Choi).
My favorite post-COIE hero is Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner).
My favorite Pre-Crisis hero is probably The Flash (Barry Allen).
You can probably tell I gravitate more towards the "regular guy/everyman" types, huh?
Anyway, my fravorites tend to change depending on which way the wind blows.

For me it's Batman with Superman coming at close second and Alan Scott at third.

For me it's very simple: Superman. Batman second.
And in general, I enjoy more any DC Comic than Marvel.

Batman. Though in two instances I'll say Wonder Woman and Catwoman, when both put down villains for a dirt nap that most certainly needed them.

My favorite superhero that will never be seen again? Tom Strong.
My favorite superhero that will be seen again but that DC will use badly? Lobo.
My favorite superhero that will still be read 50 years from now? Hal Jordan.
My favorite superheroine that will never be seen again? Promethea.
My favorite superheroine that will soon disappear from the shelves? Manhunter.
My favorite superheroine that will still be read 50 years from now? Wonder Woman.

Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes, though Ted Kord was pretty cool too) is probably my favorite, with the Green Lantern following closely on his heels. Which GL? Hard to say...I think I may just honestly love them all.

I've always had a passion for Loose Cannon. I don't know why. I just like idea of a crippled cop becoming a big blue-skinned, blonde behemoth.
For those of you who aren't familiar with my new-blooded fave, he's this guy:

I just read Morrison's entire run on the title in a 3-day span and man oh man, he's pretty damn awesome. They both are.
In terms of other heroes, I'm particularly fond of Martian Manhunter (rest in peace, J'onn), all of the Starmen (except for Will Payton, who I never really read about) and good ol' Impulse (rest in peace, Bart).
The big three are, as always, fantastic... but not just as fantastic as Loose Cannon.

A lot of you are going to laugh, but...

At this moment, these are the only two character who, if they were permanently killed off, I would seriously consider dropping comics altogether. Which probably is the best benchmark I can think of for "favorite".

Okay, first, the holy trinity of awesome characters:
Captain Marvel (the proper one, though admittedly, the guy I like was never published by DC... oh wait, they DID do reprints... so yeah, fair enough)
Green Lantern (Alan Scott)
The Flash (Jay Garrick)
After them, there are a bunch of characters I'm just plain fond of:
Starman (Jack Knight) - though I think that was more to do with the quality of the series.
Adam Strange - ditto. Love the character. Hate most of the incarnations.
Challengers of the Unknown - Conceptually strong, but with a lot of weak stories.
The Metal Men - Some characters you just wanna give 'em a big ol' hug.
Detective Chimp - just say it with me. Detective. Chimp. How can you not love it?
Wildcat - Always been a big fan, but I like him as the Golden Age palooka. Anytime people give him super powers or anything, I can't stand. 9 Lives? bleh? Heavyweight boxer who puts on a cat costume and pounds the bejeezus outta people? Hell yes.
Hard to pick a favourite Legionnaire, but I usually like Ultra Boy, followed by Brainiac 5 and then Bouncing Boy.

Kyle can be somewhat interesting given the artist angle and Guy as a hot head warrior is fine as a secondary character but I just don't get it. The rings is a very cool weapon and most of the time they are just flying around wasting it. Also the aliens stuff just leaves me cold.

For me, it depends on how they're written.
I also like anti-heroes (Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Bizarro, Riddler, etc.) but I think I'll just list my top fave straight-up heroes:
1. Impulse- geez, I miss him. I totally agree with MutoMikey's sentiments.
2. Wonder Woman- I always liked that she seemed to combine aspects of both Superman and Batman and still was a unique character in her own right-- when written well.
3. Martian Manhunter- Again, a sort of underrated combo of Supes and Bats with a distinct flair all his own.
4. Plastic Man- I like the fun characters.
5. Oracle- I guess I just think she's smart and interesting.

I miss the old cocky, flirty Kon from back in the day. It's nice to have superheroes who actually enjoy the trappings of their position sometimes.
Hawkman
09-11-2008, 12:00 AM
Gee, wonder who I'm going to say.
But yeah, Hawkman's been my favorite superhero ever since my mom bought his Super Powers figure for me way back when, and one of the first comics I can remember from my childhood was the Shadow War of Hawkman mini. The imagery is very appealing to a kid, I think: imposing guy with wings and a mace. He just looks plain cool. It's his attitude that's kept me a fan, though, Hawkman typically portrayed as a character that's more of a doer than anything else, unafraid to stand up to foes or even allies regardless of their status or level of power if he believes his cause is just.

Flash(Barry Allen)
Green Lantern(Hal Jordan)
I didn't grow up reading them, I actually got quite a few of the silver age stuff off of ebay, but they just spoke to me from those stories. Idk why.

Green Lantern. The whole freakin crew, really.
Honestly, I'd have to echo the sentiment of everybody here speaking of the GLC just being a downright cool concept. Only within the past year I've really started reading comics, coming in with relatively a blank slate as far as any pre-knowledge of the characters or their universe, but GL automatically jumped out as just completely engaging on every level.
I don't know how much of this is Geoff Johns doing, or how intact this all was before he got there. It's gotten to the point now where next paycheck I'm planning to dip back into the Silver-Age trades, because I can't wait for new issues any longer.
On a final note, I think DC is nuts not to consider a GL movie in the wake of Batman's recent success. Taking nothing away from Superman(who is also obivously an awesome character when done right), I feel the public will have a sort of "been there, done that" reaction to yet another reboot. Even if it's successful, I just don't think that it will create the same level of excitement as a character(group of characters)the general public is relatively unfamiliar with. Now that the CGI has caught up to the concept, Green Lantern, to me, has serious potential to be a HUGE hit. Seriously, you mix Star Wars with Lethal Weapon/Men In Black- what can go wrong?
