I went out and bought the new 80GB Playstation 3 (European version) and went to put in Metal Gear Solid 2.
Now I read that the hardware used to play Playstation 2 games had been removed but they have emulation software which they update similar to the X-Box 360.
Now Metal Gear Solid 2 won't work so I figure this must be one of the games they haven't got round too yet (which kinda struck me as odd to be honest, being MGS being a major Playstation exclusive).
Is there a site which tells you which games the PS3 can play? Maybe telling you what will be updated to play? Or is there a way to get it to play already?
I'm a bit of a noob with the PS3 so forgive me if this is a much asked question. Cheers guys and gals.

Unfortunately you are out of luck with PS2 backwards compatability on that model. The only PS3s to have backwards compatability are the original 20 and 60 gig models (through hardware) and the 60 gig PAL version (through software) and the first generation of the 80 NTSC gig version (through software)
Scroll down on this page for which version has what:

Sorry to break the bad news to you :(

Is it the MGS4 bundled 80?

Is the MGS4 bundled 80?
Yes it is and yes the metal gear solid 4 bundled 80gb ps3 is backward compatible. This to me is the best route to go when buying a new ps3 as of right now since you can get a ps3 that plays ps1 and ps2 games, you also get metal gear solid 4 (damn awesome game) and a dual shock 3 controller.
The new 80gb ps3 systems that were just released are not backward compatible, they just 40gb systems with a 80gb hard drive stuck in them.

Guy who works at a video game store opposite my work was telling me that Sony is wanting to get at least another year out of the PS2, get as much money as they can before the console dies sorta thing, then later they will release a patch for the PS3s allowing them to play PS2 games...
Not too sure if there is any truth to this or not though.

I really doubt it - the longevity of the PS2 only hurts the PS3.

The new version coming out is a bit smaller, has no external power and uses less electricity is what Ive read just about everywhere.

Its understandable since it still sells pretty well and be a good system for kids or people who just occasionally play games and have a library of ps2 games. Makes sense though to make a lower cost and proven system that has a huge list of games easily found for cheap and still has games coming out for it.
But a patch later? I highly doubt that since emulating software has never gone over well, even microsoft axed updates for backwards compatibility for the 360 and you can still buy ps3 systems that are fully backwards if you want to pay a bit more for it, if not then you can buy the cheaper ps3 systems.
But then again store clerks at game shops tend to think they know it all and dont often seem to care if its the truth or not on the whole. Hell Ive heard them tell people not to buy a ps3 or 360 because a new system was coming out at christmas, heard a sales clerk try to sell a nes with 2 controllers and the hookups for 89 bucks to a older couple for their kid because you cant find them on ebay since everyone is grabbing them up, or one guy was all pro 360 and tried to talk lady out of a ps3 because sony is going bankrupt and the system is known for dying and not working. Lesson here is trust what a game store clerk kid says about as much as youd trust wikipedia.
