If Sept has a run of sucky movies as most times show... The Dark Knight could....could possibly challenge "Titanic" . Its 100 million away at this point here.

yeah.. but Titanic only got 600 because it was a slow movie year and it was in theaters longer then most.. TDK COULD in theory pass it..

remember when people said TDK could in theory pass 400?

A slow September won't do it. It'll have to be a slow September, October and maybe November. It averaged under $2M a day for the last week and isn't likely to rise above that.

You see where this success has convinced WB that ALL of their superhero movies have to be 'dark' from now on? Including the Superman franchise reboot?

UGH.

Let's hope this doesn't touch the Billy Batson And The Legend Of Shazam! film!!!!!!

Wish it´d sink the Titanic record already.

I'd love to see a superhero movie hold that record.

Well...over all Marvel still has a more successful track record with superhero films lately.

And one of the reasons is even though they vary in quaility....they've made movies that appeal to a wide group of audiences. (For example the FF movies were supposed to appeal to a younger demographic than the X-Men films.)

As great as Dark Knight is, it's not the right way to handle a Superman or Wonder Woman feature.

Ideally, I'd like to see DC/WB kind of mix their current approach with Marvel's. Get top flight actors and directors. But gear the "feel" of each franchise to a different demographic.

You mention Captain Marvel right? That movie NEEDS to be a family movie.

oooooooh Dark Marvel.
I shudder at the mere thought of it.
TREAD CAREFULLY WB!

I thought this was pretty neat - especially considering the timeframe as compared to Titanic - until I read more about it. Turns out, even if TDK "wins" the top spot by bringing in $600 million, it still won't have really beaten Titanic:

Factoring in today’s higher admission prices, “The Dark Knight” would need to take in about $900 million to match the number of tickets sold by “Titanic.” (source) (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26486147/)

Ouch. So it'd bring in as much money (though to be honest, I'm doubting it'll do so at this point) but really, a lot fewer people will have gone to see it. Guess that also explains how it managed to make so much money so quickly, too...

But Titanic doesn't have that record either. Factoring in inflation and higher ticket prices, Gone With the Wind is the top movie. Star Wars is second. Titanic is "only" third, but it still gets credit for being #1. I wouldn't mind seeing a movie that I like better get that credit instead.

We need to start a vial internet marketing campaign to get all of our friends to see The Dark Knight so that we can take out Titanic! Right now, TDK is struggling to stay in the Top 5, I'm worried it won't be in theaters long enough to sink Titanic....

We dont even need a full 100.000.000 just 98.000.000

It probably won't.

It doesn't need to stay in the top 5, but once it drops out of the top ten, the domestic gross will probably be pretty much capped. The projections were that it wouldn't make it and would top off at around $520 M. Given its current earnings, I hope that it'll beat that at the least. I mean, it still hasn't hit my local IMAX yet because of the demand.

And I misspoke earlier. Titanic is 6th adjusted for inflation. The Dark Knight is 30th.

I don't think it stands a prayer of beating Titanic worldwide. It isn't even halfway there yet. Maybe the staggered releases will keep that money flowing in.

you can't use the adjusted list.. as with that no new movie will ever come close to the top..

I'd love to see the Dark Knight do it. But yeah... with how its going it will end up around $530 million here. Still a huge sucess and I hope WB doesn't think each comic book movie has to be dark to be a hit. Thats just stupied thinking ....I'd hate to see a dark Shazam movie.

eh, it's made plenty so far. I don't care about records. I just hope WB/DC uses the money garnished from it to produce more and better comic books and DC movies. :)

"Robinov wants his next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as The Dark Knight. Creatively, he sees exploring the evil side to characters as the key to unlocking some of Warner Bros.' DC properties. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it," he says. That goes for the company's Superman franchise as well.

This reminds me of the late 80's, early 90's in comics, post DKR. Screw that.

It will do $550M with little effort. I wouldn't count it out for $600M at this point either. You can't tell. It's possible a lot of fans might go see it again just to push the numbers up.

I'm really unsettled by people that have gone to see this movie five, six times in theaters. Don't you have anything better to do?

Ok, here's a provocative question.

Is Batman good for the DCU?

When DKR hit stands, we got a whole whack of imitators and now, the Warner brass is going to take the same tack with its movies.

Batman seems to NEGATIVELY influence other comic book characters...

Agent Helix

Batman is just a fictional character.

Bad writing and bad leadership are bad for Warner Bros. and the DCU.

As you can see, the subject of adjusting for inflation is pretty pointless, since the list has always been topped - and always will be topped - by a movie released in 1939.

Dark Knight won't hit the $600 million mark. I guarantee it'll be pulled soon in order to get the DVD ready for Christmas release. It might remain in the theaters another 3 weeks tops.

Conversely, adjusting for inflation makes any conversation about Titanic vs. The Dark Knight pointless.

Even if you want to adjust movies for inflation, DK is still #2 in terms of ACTUAL money earned in the box office Period.

If you want to talk number of tickets sold, that's different... and a far better barometer in terms of which movie is actually #1, #2, etc.

Sean Walsh

Nice point.

Point taken?

....for the minions of Hollywood it's still relevant, though. If it outdoes TITANIC, they can sell it as "THE BIGGEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!" and Joe Q. Public will get that. They can't sell "adjusted for inflation" and the specifics of ticket prices and "#'s of tickets sold" to the masses so easily.
