Cos I'm playing Painkiller and the only way I could complete the 'Asylum' level was to play loud, cheerful Basement Jaxx music.
Anybody, anybody, Bueller?

Eternal Darkness.
If you've played it, you know why. If you haven't, you've been warned. Do not play at night alone or drunk. I'm just saying.

i played one cant remember the name but it was freaky as hell
I think it was Yahtzee
No seriously i PLayed one for PS2 had like a little girls ghost kept killing me, gave me nightmare, but i was also on pain meds at the time too
This is the reason I don't play more "serious" games. I get too damn tense. I stick to the "cute" games, like whatever the newest Mario platformer is. Or the Donkey Kong Country games. Basically, all cute platformers, I love. And even those stress me out and increase my anxiety. So I can just imagine how bad I'd be playing a game where I had to blast zombies' heads off. It's kind of odd, since I love horror movies.
I do make exceptions for cool fighting games and RPGs like the Baldur's Gate series, or Diablo 2.

I grew up in a town full of crackheads, not much different than Zombies
So resident Evil and games of the like never did much for me.

Silent Hill 2. And there are bits in some of the Fatal Frames games that are full of creepy.

Earthbound: the Giygas fight. Made more freaky by how cutesy the rest of the game is.
Here it is, plus the ending. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czOg5CBjGeY&feature=related)

The first Pyramid Head cutscene in the former....GAH!

It didn't freak me out in terms of scaring me, but MGS 2 freaked me out in a mindbending way.
Oh, and I second Bioshock. I usually try to 'play evil' in these games, but damn.... those creepy Little Sisters..... Couldn't harvest them, but they sent a chill up the spine like nobody's business!

Are you kidding?
I LOVE them little sisters:"- Look, Mr. Bubbles, an angel."
Took me a while to realise that angels for them were the corpses.
I love even the splicers, I could just sit in a corner, listening to their dialogues, weīre talking straight outta Arkham Asylum.material here:"- You said you were gonna make me pretty."

I love the propaganda posters in their quarters.

Oh yes, toward the end, you see where they were being raised.... there's very appropriate propaganda posters for them. Also, drawings they did on the walls.....
But I won't spoil it for you.
And yeah, the environs are to savor. This game proves that if video games aren't art, they can at least be made by very skilled artisans. Holy crap, the game's gorgeous.

I never played those..... so I can't compare.... but Bioshock is at least a total mindfuck.
(Can you tell I love this game? )
BTW, are you sparing or harvesting the sisters?

Iīm freeing them, of course.
Just the mere idea of harvesting them made my skin crawl.
Plus they look so cute when they revert to normal little girls, trying to climb whatever those holes in the wall are....
I hope this choice doesnīt come to bite me in the end, since apparently you can collect far more Adam if you harvest them creepies and from what Atlas is saying, Iīm gonna need it.

Well, harvesting them helps you in the short term, freeing them helps you in the long term, so strategically speaking, it depends on how you play. I freed 'em every time I played (even in the games I started saying, 'Dammit! This time I'm gonna harvest them to see THAT ending!) 'cause when it came time, I couldn't bear to harvest. And I have no regrets in how the game played out.

Silent Hill 1 in the school, those little babies that walk around crying. They don't hurt you, but you can't kill em either. Oh and the baby ghost things with knives.
Basically all of Silent Hill 2.
And Fatal Frame.

Silent Hill 1 & 2. I remember feeling really sorry for the second one's protagonist because he had to go through all these places that I'd fucking hate to be in, like the hospital and the underwater prison.
They did a good job of capturing that feeling you get while watching unlucky characters in horror movies, you know, that whole, "DON'T GO OUT THERE YOU STUPID BUGGER, THERE'S SOME TERRIBLE MURDERER/MONSTER, AND GOING THERE'S GOING TO GET YOU MINCED", only in the case of the games, you're an active participant, because until you make your character go 'OUT THERE', nothing's going to proceed.

At one point a whole group of us were watching someone play at the school level. There was this cut scene at the clocktower, ones it ended and the camera sort of "zoomed out", there was one of those things right next to Harry. We all jumped and freaked out.

I must second Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. The game is specifically designed to severely mess your head up. And it succeeds.

No, no, in the school itīs the harmless "good kiddy ghosts".
Later on in the last level (I think itīs called "Nowhere", when you have several rooms from various locations all jumbled up), you get the "bad kiddy ghosts". Same tiny black shadows, but this time the have knives and this freaky cristaline giggle that makes your skin crawl.
Those are the ones that freaked me the most in the whole game.

I love playing Painkiller.

I just reactivated my CoH account, which will be something of a relief to my frayed nerves. But I agree with you - Painkiller is an excellent game. The degree of imagination involved in the monsters you face is very enjoyable and I am very impressed with just how effective the soundtrack is in creating hairtrigger tension.
The strange sighing and chanting in the auditorium really got to me - very Shining-like. What impressed me was I had this strong urge to finish the level and then get the hell out of there.
I want to buy a copy of Bioshock as well for myself, but the slicers freak me out. For I....am a wuss.

I've always been meaning to pick up Eternal Darkness, but I can't find a copy anywhere... made worse by the fact, of course, that Singapore stopped their GameCube support halfway through last-gen, so essentially I haven't gotten any new games since early 2006.
I played through the first portion of BioShock at my friend's house, which was pretty freaky, but I think I'm just scratching the surface. Now Condemned was a scary game. Nowhere as fun as F.E.A.R., IMO, but I think with easily twice the scare factor.

Well, I donīt remember meeting those in school (been a while).
Ddoesnīt mean they werenīt there.
One thing I hated about the school.. the teddy bears. I would have much preferred they kept the naked thingies from the demo, much spookier.
