I don't know if it's exactly what you're looking for, but I really enjoyed Kate Fox's Watching the English.

A book came out just the last few months by an American woman who moved to England and talked about her culture clash experiences. It got good reviews but all I can remember right now is the cover.
If you want to get specialized, there's this (http://www.powells.com/biblio/9780767928083?&PID=32442).

Bill Bryson's Notes from a Small Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notes_from_a_small_island) is apparently very good.

Ignore all those. Jump in at the deep end with Iain Sinclair's Lights Out for the Territory, and Peter Ackroyd's London: A Biography.
These two guys are the source material for Alan Moore's From Hell, and they're both a lot nastier than he is.
As indeed is England.

You could also try The English. A Portrait of a People by Jeremy Paxman. If you want to focus in a bit more. I don't really have much of an idea about books on Scotland or Wales.

I keep toying with the idea of picking Akroyds book, is it a must read or a take it on holiday to Ireland with me in a few months?

I received an extensive (Hitchens) review of Ackroyd's book today.
It definitely seems to fit the bill more than you'd assume from the title.
