Earlier today, we first broke the news that Square Enix had plans to takeover beleaguered game company Tecmo. At the ensuing press conference, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada revealed that this friendly takeover offer wasn't as sudden as it appears.

According to Wada, there have been discussions since May with former Tecmo president Yoshimi Yasuda and Tecmo Chairman of the Board (and current president) Yasuharu Kakihara. Yasuda has recently resigned in wake of a slew of labor dispute legal trouble with Team Ninja and Dead or Alive member Tomonobu Itagaki. Wada admits that he was "concerned" what would happen regarding those discussions when Yasuda resigned.

This, said Wada, is the same as when Square and Enix merged, adding: "In entertainment, games are the equal of the film and television industry, and growth is strong. But, now the Japanese game industry isn't leading with the same vigor that it did previously... This is a worldwide battle."

As we broke earlier, the Tecmo Board of Directors has until September 4th to approve the offer. It includes offering to purchase a controlling interest in Tecmo by purchasing shares in that company at 30 percent premium (¥960 a share compared to yesterday's close price of ¥706 a share). But if Tecmo does accept the offer, what will happen to Tecmo? It will fall under a holding company umbrella, said the exec. But regarding the actual Tecmo brand, Wada stated, "To either be affiliated and losing the brand or possibly merging with Taito, that's the big difference." Square Enix acquired Taito in 2005.

Wada was keen to point out how important (and attractive) Tecmo's IPs were. Not only that, he praised the company's ability to produce top quality titles — most notably Tecmo's fighting and action games. Wada also lauded the company's success abroad. The Square Enix exec pointed out that talented teams are needed to make games. "While it looks like the games are made by a single, talented genius, games are made by teams," said Wada. When asked about the Itagaki labor dispute, Wada replied: "I don't know anything of the concrete details of this particular case."

"I can only believe that our proposal will be accepted," stated Wada. "I hope."

Bring on the Ninja Gaiden RPGs!

Yes, I read this news in the morning. Very interesting, to say the least.

Well, Square-Enix still has to wait the answer from Tecmo's Board Of Directors. So, nothing's set in stone yet. However, I don't like what Wada said about the possibility of Tecmo losing its brand or merging with Taito. The name "Tecmo" is recognized worldwide and associated with Ninja Gaiden, Tecmo Bowl, Rygar and Dead Or Alive. Losing the name would be a huge mistake, in my opinion.

Whoa...

This is some terribly weird news....

I knew Tecmo wasn't doing too good, but dang... Hopefully, new companies will take it's place.

I worst thing that could happen to the video game industry (and it's something that might be happening already) is losing one of the big reasons why it's so popular (besides video games being fun): It's originality and creativity.

IMO, SquareEnix don't represent those two factors.

Well this unexpected and interesting news. Wada does seem to have respect for Tecom's franchises so maybe It wouldn't be such a bad thing if Tecom accepted the offer.

Well, it hasn't happened yet.

Still, it may very well be the best possible outcome for Tecmo at this point.

So, Dead or Alive will be heading back to the Playstation, assuming it outlives Itagaki's departure at all.

Edit: Wait, nevermind. I associated Square Enix with Sony in my head, just because all the Final Fantasy games were coming out on Playstation for a while. (Now even that's not true, with FFXIII having an Xbox 360 version.)

The question is, will their properties be revived by the merger, like Taito's long-stagnant Space Invaders, or buried by it, like Quest's Ogre Battle?

Hmmmmm...
Are we seeing small efforts to combat EA and Actiblizzard?
In the future, there will be one giant videogame company, and it's games will be legion.
And Madden will still come out every year.
And i'm not buying a new one till 2011!!!!

Deception 5 with final fantasy characters. Run and trapped (and kill) all your favorite annoying final fantasy characters with your room traps - Iron Ball , Flaming arrows , magnetic wall , etc. Fun fun fun.

Eat wall that moves and crushes you Tidus, the entire cast of FF8 including the npcs, sephiroth, vincent for having no storyline but were given a crappy game of your own because you had a red coat, Fighter, Yuffie, Shadow for being reintroduced in the second half of a game in a half assed way.
And a hole in the ground for the annoying character in FF12 i haven't got to yet because i still haven't left the first area of the game.
But i know you're coming....

In both the United States and Japan there never was much intrest in Ogre Battle which is a shame as all the games in the series were awesome and ground breaking. Not too many people know this but it was Tactics Ogre rather than Final Fantasy Tactics that kicked off the whole tactical game genre.

Was there a gameboy Tactics Ogre game because I remember playing some obscure GBA tactics game that got me into the genre.

No, that would be Fire Emblem.

Another significant genre entry that came out before Tactics Ogre would be Sega's Shining Force.

Maybe you're just referring to games that actually have the word "Tactics" in the title, though?

If they mean games where two armies fight on a grid, there were computer war games like that pre nes.
If they mean games where you have individual characters, fighting on a grid, who have the ability to level up, then Shining Force is the first i recall, but i'm getting a vague memory of another genesis game that came before it.
Blanking on the name.

Yes there was. It was called Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis
