This weeks Avatar contest is JAZZ.
Do yo thang.
.................................................. ........................
The rules:
The CBR Avatar ContestŠ begins on Wednesday and ends on Tuesday, at which point voting begins, ending when Tuesday ends in all time zones. As a rule, voting before Tuesday is frowned upon, though exceptions are made if you've got a good reason. Suggesting avatar ideas for others is prohibited. By suggesting, you are in essence removing that idea from consideration by any and all players. Contest eligibility is dependent on keeping your entered avatar for the entire week. Changing your avatar before the week is up will disqualify you, unless you're changing it to something else that fits the contest theme and announce your change in the thread. Changing avatars within your chosen subject is permitted. Putting 'dibs' on a subject lasts for 48 hours, at which time it's free to be taken by somebody else. In the event of a tie, the winner will be decided by the first vote by a poster who has not previously voted in that week's contest. I once got stung by a jellyfish in my bad place. The contest winner chooses the next week's contest theme and must add something stupid to the rules. Value of prize is 1/100 of 1˘, and is not redeemable for cash. No prize alternatives are available. All decisions are final, and bitching about the decisions in a silly online game is stupid and will result in shameless mocking for an indeterminate period of time. Contest void in Delaware. We aren't sure why, but who cares? It's Delaware.

As for me, I'm in with Scatman John. While not actually singing jazz per se, John took a lot of influence from performers like Louie Armstrong(his song "Everybody Jam" was a tribute to him), and he used the jazz singing style of Scat to offset his own problems with his stutter.

Really? Cool.
When I hear the word "Jazz" I immediately think in Dizzy Gillespie (I remember reading about his death in the 90's and I asked my father who he was and he gave me a cool talk about him). The other is the Schneider movie, because of the "all that jazz" expression.

Well, with the exception of Kenny G and the spoof entries you've got a pretty good jazz primer here. A bit light on Latin jazz and missing a couple of giants, but Satch, Bird, Dizzy, Duke, Miles and Oscar Peterson cover an awful lot of great music. Get listening.

Did Burns ever do a documentary about him? I remember hearing something about it it in some Jazz History class I took.
You know, it's amazing how boring Jazz can be when taught in class (poorly, might I add), but how cool it can be when you read about/listen to it on your own.

Yep (http://www.pbs.org/jazz/index.htm). It's a pretty good little documentary, too. But, yeah, I agree with you: I'd much rather listen to the music on my own. A great way to get a nice little sampling is to plug in the names from Slam's list onto pandora.com.

Slam, there are two Miles albums I've come upon recently, and I know you're a big fan so I wanted to see if you've heard them.
The first one is 1953-55 Sessions, a two-disc Essential Collection that includes Monk and Mingus among other greats. I'm listening to it now. Absolutely fantastic.
The second is a 1980s Miles album called Aura--recorded in '85 but released in '89. With the exception of the first track, simply "Intro," every track is named after a color, like "Red," "Violet," etc. John McLaughlin is back as guitarist. The album was composed and arranged by Palle Mickelborg, a Danish trumpeter. Anyway, the album is extremely weird. Not sure what to think of it yet.

I'm very familiar with Aura. With limited exceptions I'm not a fan of Miles' late Columbia output or his Warner Brothers albums. For the most part I felt like they were experimentation for the sake of experimentation and that they generally failed as experiments. The exceptions would probably be Star People and Amandla.
Not that there wasn't some interesting things in Aura. It was clearly an attempt to recapture the Gil Evans type orchestration in a fusion setting. And it's always good to see John McLaughlin working with Miles. But overall, it seemed like a failed attempt to translate fusion to Evans-type orchestration.
I don't think I'm familiar with the other one. But there are so many Davis compilations that it's hard to say.

54,342. Better get cracking and break out the Google maps.
One of the problems with "I need a jazz song to listen to" is that there are many MANY types of jazz, and the genre is somewhat improvisational to begin with. So even jazz fans are going to find lots and lots of jazz they don't care for.
It's hard to even say "What is jazz?". I think it's where the phrase "If you gotta ask the question, you ain't never gonna understand the answer." originated.

Start with Old-School New Orleans Jazz and work your way forward. Louis Armstrong prior to the '60s.
Then Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Ella Fitzgerald for a warm-up. Then come back and ask for more.
