A sad day. James Jean will no longer be doing Fables covers. His last issue will be #81. I'm usually not a big cover art person, but his covers just did something for me. I will miss them, and I hope DC gets somebody with a style that's equally as distinctive and striking as his was.

His work was good, but I always thought it was extremely overrated; personally, I'll be glad that someone else will finally get a shot at the Eisner, because his winning streak has been a little ridiculous.

I think James Jean just 'fits' Fables and was perfect as the cover artist. I do agree art is subjective and all, but speaking totally for myself, I will miss his beautiful covers for Fables. I'm sure the replacement will be wonderful, but there was just a synergy IMO that Mr. Jean had with the title.

I do see the future covers missing something without him on the covers. His covers have added some of the storybook quality to the issues.

Shame - Fables is the only comic where I care who does the covers. I hope James Jean finds a suitable place for his talents - unlike those Batman covers he did which I found quite mediocre.

Here's hoping there's no truth to the rumor that Liefeld is taking his spot!

(I'm kidding.)

(I hope.)

I was thinking about who would be a good cover artist to take Jean's place.

Perhaps Jill Thompson (Scary Godmother/Sandman) would be a good choice? She does wonderful and whimsical work and isn't a stranger to Vertigo...

His work really has been a major part of the books appeal.

I wonder if that collected covers volume that is coming out soon should be delayed, in order to include his remaining paintings from #76-81? It seems only fair to the fans for Vertigo to include everything in one package.

Nonsense. Utter nonsense.

His covers were the first thing to attract me to the book, and I've seen firsthand the positive response his work gets from non-comic buyers.

Besides, Eisners? Does anyone really care about that rigged sham of self-aggrandizement?

According to Bill Willingham on Clockwork Storybook (http://clockworkstorybook.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2891&start=30) the book has been printed.

Shame - Fables is the only comic where I care who does the covers.

Brian Bolland and Paul Pope are the only two other cover artists whose covers I always stop to marvel at.
His will be big shoes to fill.

I always wanted to see Alex Maleev do more covers after his variant to #1.

I think Easo Andrews could do some interesting Fables covers, or Sam Weber. They've both done some very cool stuff for the new House Of Mystery. It seems JJ is going to do more personal work now which is great obviously, but I hope he does some more comics stuff one day, because there's no one else like him.

Fables just isn't going to be the same. The stories will be of course, but the comic itself is certainly losing something from this.

Is there any indication of who will succeed him?

I really love how he never really paints the same character in the same way. The style definitely has a cohesive look to it but he does like to go in interesting directions withing his own universe. I love it but I'm also excited to see whats next.

The comic will still be the same comic, but it will be interesting to see who DC/Vertigo winds up putting on covers.

At the same time though, good luck to Jean for doing his own thing over someone else's.

Might there be a compromise position down the road? Hire someone else to do the pamphlet covers, with Jean doing paperback covers a couple times a year. Kind of what Brian Wood is doing with DMZ - he's not doing the pamphlet covers anymore, but is continuing to design the paperback covers.

Sad. I remember looking at some of the recent covers at the back of one of the graphic novels and thinking that they would make really awesome paintings.

Considering James Jean is leaving fables to become a professional painter there is nothing to be sad about. I think it's great when an artist can follow thier own muse and have a rewarding career in thier chosen field. If you miss his work so bad follow it as he does Gallery shows, releases books or the work he posts to the web.

I've been hoping for his covers to be turned into a series of posters for a long time now.

Wow, I guess that's pretty cool then. I'll definitely have to check his stuff out.

*sigh* Have a nice cup of tea, and settle down.

Fables was James' last illustration work and he kept doing it after he had stopped all the rest of his illustration work. If you read his farewell post (http://www.processrecess.com/index.php?uid=B47FAF), it's pretty clear that this was not a decision he made lightly or easily.

No matter how much I'm going to miss his cover art, I totally understand why he wants to follow his dreams and I wish him the very best.

But no matter how fantastic James' covers were, they were just the tasty, tasty icing on the ever-so-yummy Fables cake. As long as Willingham and Buckingham are creating their magic, I have no fear for Fables.

As long as Willingham and Buckingham are there there's nothing to fret about. James Jean was so spectacular in what he did the only thing to worry about is that any cover artist after him is going to be a tad underwhelming. I am not just saying this because I'm a Fables fanboy but I have never seen such great covers in my life. For the most part I never even gave them much thought before.
