It's not an overstatement to say that allot of people are disappointed with both Countdown and Final Crisis. So my question is, what would you have done? What would be your idea for the ultimate Crisis in the DCU?

We probably need a definition.
Would you say that a "Crisis" wouldn't just be a big crossover, but also one that has to leave permanent major changes to the DCU (I don't think it necessarily has to alter the Multiverse, but at the very least something really major about heroics on the main "Earth" has to change).
As an example, although I believe the DCU did once have something like Marvel's Super-human Registration Act, it was never "milked" as a large-scale company wide crossover plot. If one WAS used that way, it would count as a "Crisis" level event in my estimation.
{Please note the example given above is NOT what I'd like to see, it was just a convenient example of how a non-multiverse driven Crisis might work}

Maybe if its a SPACE TORNADO! And it threatens to wipe out the Sun.
EDIT - Actually... that's not too far from The Final Night. Eek!

Basically I would consider a Crisis to be a big event that is larger in scale and effect then the normal crossovers are, containing events and even characters you wouldn't normally see in the average crossover.
I don't think Identity Crisis was really a Crisis for example.

Maybe its time for DC to do some kind of "War of the Gods" type thing again?
In theory "Reign In Hell" could have been done as a really really big event. The IDEA had huge potential, whatever you think of the actual execution. It could have been done in such a way that a power struggle in Hell affected everyone in any DC book.

In all seriousness....
I would shatter the current Earth 0/New Earth/Central Earth back into it's pre-Crisis components.
Superman and most of the DC characters on Earth 1, the Marvels on Earth S/5, Charleston on Earth 4 etc. And just because... Batman on his own Earth where there are no high-power supers. Blockbuster is the strongest man in the world.
Justice League Unlimited would be the main means of them meeting and teaming up deal with threats no one Earth can.
That would be my new status quo. No idea how we'd get there... space tornado is as good an idea as any, but that's where we'd end up.
As for joke suggestions, read my sig.

Superboy/man Prime continues to go on a rampage destroying realities because no one in DC has the guts to put him down like the mad dog that he is. Can't let a plot device fall by the wayside. Wonder Woman wouldn't have a problem with it, but Batman and Superman would angst about it and prevent her from doing it. Although, I don't think WW could beat Prime at the height of his abilities. Call Superboy/man Prime Crisis and let him do what he does best. He could be the trashman of the DCU. If a particular reality isn't working, Crisis comes along and removes it from existence. His motivation is still the same in that he is trying to find/recreate his perfect Earth. Whenever DC needs a mega-crossover event or a reboot, bring out Crisis and its game on. The Crisis title would never go away. Imagine: "Crisis", "Crisis Strikes Back", "Return of Crisis" or "Crisis Returns", "Revenge of Crisis", "Dark Crisis", "Crisis Lives", "Son of Crisis". DC will be able to do crisis events for the next 100 years.
