View Full Version : Wolverine Appreciation

Hey guys! I decided to start an official Wolverine Appreciation thread. Pariah-1972 said that it seemed like Dazzler had more fans on the X-boards than Wolverine, and I thought that was sad (No offense to Dazzler fans because she is awesome). Some people were afraid to start the thread because of all the hate they thought it would get...so please, if you don't have anything constructive to say, please don't post. Discussing the character and what you like and dislike is one thing, but I think when people post in like a Quasar appreciation thread just to say "I hate Quasar and don't read his books"...well, I think that's just pointless. I appreciate everyone's input, but please don't just post and say "Meh" or "I hate Wolverine" lol. This is the official thread to post your favorite pics, to discuss, to show feats of, and talk about the appearances of the Man called Logan/James Howlett/Wolverine/Weapon X/The Living Weapon.
Here's a link to "The Softer Side of Logan" currently still going on:

And I'll also start off the thread by posting some of my favorite Wolverine scans:

Fuck the haters, Wolverine is an AWESOME character. Yeah, he's in too many damn books, and stay the fuck away from his origin stories. He's still great though, and with Jason Aaron on his solo book, better than ever. I think he's one of the X-men most important characters; he brings an energy and experience every time he's there, and he has that all-important "BADASS" role he does so well. I love Kitty and Nightcrawler for their more light-hearted, accessible characterization, I love Scott and Ororo because of how interesting their they've grown as not just leaders but as people, but Logan always worked best as just "the badass guy with the mysterious past", which I think has been lost over the years(hell he has an entire 50 issue series about his Origins, for Christ's sake).
He's a mean guy you don't want to fuck with, but he isn't heartless. He loves, he would die for the people he cares for, he has many friends from around the world. His experience has given him a Zen master like understanding of the way of the world, and he doesn't just fly off the handle for silly reasons like his earlier days with the X-men. He's grown up past that, and trying to steal Jean away from Scott.
He's Clint Eastwood meets Ken Watanabe, a stone-cold killer and a great drinking buddy, he's the best at what he does even if its not very nice. He's Wolverine, and he's still my favorite X-men character.

The Brown costume is the best! Although I do love his New X-men outfit too.
I'd appreciate Wolverine a lot more if all these lame writers hadn't screwed him up so much and Marvel overexposed him in the past 20 years.
Justin K.

His overexposure isn't a bad thing, when one writer makes a mistake, gives another writer a reason to fix it up and have it make sense.
If not that, make it something better. I do enjoy him by Jason Aaron the most though so far. His Weapon X book is really kick ass,
and I reread Get Mystique today, I think I enjoyed it a little more this time around.

I don't even think he is really overexposed...at least not in the ways he use to be. He may be a lot of book but he rarely does much in many of those books.
And really if you're not reading Wolverine by Jason Aaron then you're not living.

This week's Fun Wolverine Moment comes from Uncanny X-men Annual #11, where Wolverine, on the anniversary of his canceled wedding, stumbles home drunk(well as drunk as he can be with that healing factor). Great looking work by Alan Davis here.

Can't it be both? Longshot was VERY naive back then, Dazzler is gonna be so jealous
Also, this is the same issue where Storm and Logan TOTALLY make out. Logan/Ororo as fuck buddies is awesome ^_^

I don't think he can take the Hulk down, we've seen those two throw blows. But I do think he's incredibly dangerous. He's this little berserker fighting machine. His claws cut through pretty much anything, he's got natural speed and decades worth of fighting experience, and he's pretty much unkillable at this point(for better or worse); his arm will get blown off down to the skeleton, and he'll regrow it in a few minutes time.
A lot of people are just scared of the guy, because unlike the vast majority of Marvel superheroes, the guy has killed thousands of people(probably much more than that lol). Just the way he carries himself, or his macho rhetoric, or the smile he puts on when he's about to cut loose in battle. Its easy to see why he's become such a popular character, especially with the surprising amount of depth he has.

Thanks for that. But to me that isn't dangerous. That's just a brute who thinks with his fists.
Not everything can be solved with just brute strength. Characters like Batman, Dr. Doom, Norman Osborn (when not crazy) Black Panther, Black Bolt, Emma Frost etc. Who understand that 'there are many ways to skin a cat' and with huge egos. Are way more dangerous and scary to me than someone who goes around beating people up. In fact to me X-23 is far scarrier than Wolverine. She's cold and calculating (fortunately Laura isn't vindictive).
Don't get me wrong, I love Wolverine. But Wolverine seems to be most dangerous when he's up against other thugs like himself.
NickFury90
05-13-2010, 09:23 AM
Very true, but I think Logan's intimidation factor plays into how he handles people. Sometimes, simply the hint of violence is all it takes to win the day. He also knows how to use all of his abilities to get what he wants, like that time he blew himself up in that car bomb to trap Mystique, knowing his healing factor would bring him back. He has many years of experience in the art of war, and uses more than just his claws to gain victory.
But I do get what you mean, compared to super geniuses like Batman or Dr. Doom with their big plans, he's probably out of his league.

But that's the thing; one of Logans main factors is that he is smarter than he gives off. I mean he'e been live for how long? He's been to numerous countries, fought in wars, learned tons of languages, martial arts, and all that other stuff. He knows how to calculate and do things more than one way. At the same time though he fights a lot of petty thugs whereas all he has to do is pop a claw and they shit themselves.

Yeah, Wolverine might not be blessed with super intellect like Reed Richards, Doom, Batman, Luthor, etc, or as strong as Hulk, Superman, the Sentry, but he does have several decades worth of battle knowledge and experience. He could probably write a "Art of War II" book and have the intellect to back it up.

That would be epic. Wolverine just decides to sit down, and write a book to pass on everything he knows.
And that scene is beautiful. Poor Logan and his search to find "inner serenity".:frown:

i absolutly love this miniThat's one of my favorite Wolverine scenes! It's the turning point for Logan in that story, when he decides to change. He dicides to stop acting like an animal and he finally becomes a man worthy of Mariko.
It's a beautiful scene and, say what you want about Claremont, he was kicking ass when he wrote this!

I finally got around to reading this and it was pretty good. The story was engaging. The art was gorgeous and I feel Garney has gone back to his original magic but better than his Cap and Silver Surfer. Logan of course looked hot. But not over the top pretty boy which I like. How Logan should be.

Side Note:
I was watching the 90s cartoon lastnight, the episode was "Captive Hearts" and I was loving how the cartoon stayed true to Wolvie and Storms relationship...Storm was freaking out in the morlock tunnles and the other teammates were trying to help her or question her and Wolvie was like "its her call."...Rogue even told Wolvie "Help Her" and Wolvie responded with..."Let her ask for it"
LOVE IT! wish they would team up way more again.

How long will it be before Wolverine starts regularly appearing in the majority of DC comics as well? The people in charge at DC won't have a say in this, naturally. After this occurs, it'll only be a matter of time when "comic books" are regularly referred to as "Wolverines."
"Oh boy, it's Wednesday!"
"Wednesday? What's so special about Wednesday?"
"It's the day that the new Wolverines come out! Squeee!"
"Oh, you're into Wolverines. Ah, yes. I liked them quite a bit when I was a lad. Back then we called them 'comic books.'"

Aaron's Wolverine is the best written since Larry Hama and the Deathlok storyline has been a brilliant read all along. In fact IMHO Wolverine:Weapon X is the best Wolverine book there has been for years. I hope the quality continues when it becomes Wolverine #1.

And all this time, I have never asked for your frienship. I'm fixing my mistake.
It's the "prrrr" that gets me.

Wolverine is an amazing comic character. He is a tough guy runt who gets shit done HIS way. He is the epitome of Bad Ass. Cool. Rugged. Man. Who wouldn't want to be like this man?
He is highly respected and highly loved, in addition to being highly favored. As well as being highly hated lol. He is the most important X-man, and by far the most popular.
I love that he loves his extended family hard, and will do anything to help him, especially his best friends (Nightcrawler (bff), Colossus, Storm, Shadowcat, Jubilee, Phoenix, Psylocke, Beast, Banshee, Rogue, Professor X).
He also have a strong love for his daughters too. From the first surrogate (Shadowcat), to the second (Rogue), to the third (Jubilee) and from the REAL (X-23).
He shall never die as long as the x-men are still available. I think he will be celebrating his 112 b-day soon. Go Wolverine!

Wolverine is the best and im really likeing where he is headed. Next week is great with the road to hell and wolverine #1 the previews which look good. THE Wolvieverse as its becoming seems great and though only one solo is needed as jason aaron is great THE BEST THERE IS LOOKS interesting as does the UNCANNY X-FORCE and daken and x-23 books. These 5 are the ones i look forward to fromwthe x-titles

Wolverine as written by Jason Aaron has reminded me why I like the character so much. There's a sense of grittiness that I feel is necessary for Wolverine. He's like Conan the Barbarian meets the Man with No Name; he needs grit!

I can definitely understand why some would think that Wolverine is over-exposed, but I don't think it's such a bad thing. I guess it's just me, but I like having so many titles to choose from. I don't care much for Uncanny X-Men or either Avengers or New Avengers at the moment so I don't read those, but I still meet my Wolverine quota with Wolverine and Uncanny X-Force. I think that's kind of nice.

The thing about the Best There Is to me, is how redundant the book looks. It just doesnt seem to have nothing that separates it from the adjectiveless book.
That list is really food for thought. 9 books and only 2 give me any garanties of seeing a well written Wolverine (Wolverine and Astonishing Spiderman and Wolverine) and they are both written by the same writer!

I'm a little behind and so I just read the Jason Aaron Weapon X story about Logan being locked in a mental institution with his memory wiped and I have to say that is one of the best Wolverine stories I've read in a long time. I've never been the biggest fan of Wolverine solo books but if this is the standard for his new Wolverine series, then Aaron already has a devoted reader.

how really strong his bone claw??We're at that point in the Wolverine From the Beginning thread and was thinking about that myself. He just got run over and flat lined but instantly healed including internal organs, so I suppose bone would also instantly regenerate. If even the slightest stress would instantly regenerate, constant healing means never getting hurt or damaged. It's possible that bone would never break or stress, and might even be stronger than adamantium. At least that's my theory.

I hope there aren't any casualties with Schism. Marvel has just been going too far with the killing off. Also, I always liked the rare Logan-Scott friendship, where both respect each other. I know they're eventually going to reunite their "split" teams but why do another Civil War thing? All this "Nothing will ever be the same" crap, I'm sick of it.
