I will pick it up until we find out why War Machine is a cyborg. If its not a good enough reason I will drop it again.

Dayyyyummmm grrrrllllllll. i like the look of that. i'm kind of disappointed that Rhodey's all disfigured now though. i was hoping there'd be some romance in his life.

OK, I was slightly confused at first, I though Manco was doing the art. I guess that's when the book officially becomes Rhodey's?
Although forget the cyborg thing, I'm still looking for a decent excuse of how Rhodey went from leading the Crew to working for ONE and the Initiative.

speculation: Tony used his political connections to get him the job.

Yes, but how did he go from robbing the feds to being one? It's not hard to figure how he got the job, but why did he get the job? He's always been a bit anti-authority for that. Granted, he was out of ONE before they got the mutant guarding job, but still.

All I can say to that comment is: no $#!+
But when did Jim Rhodes get all disfigured? Did something happen to him during his run in the Initiative? I never read the book, can anyone explain? And honestly, if he had to be made a cyborg, couldn't Tony shell out a few bucks to make him look whole? I mean, damn, I'd feel gypped.

It appears to have happened in between the events of the ONE mini and the beginning of The Initiative. Notice we've never seen Rhodey take off the armor.

I'm not sure what you're meaning here, but you also seem to miss what I'm getting at. Rhodey's been screwed over (and screwing over) the government since at least Kaminski-era Iron Man, all through his solo series, and going through The Crew. Then, all of a sudden, he was leading people in Sentinel armor. I'm not asking how he took the job, I'm asking why he would have taken it.

read armor wars.
Tony is responsible for the breakout at the vault cause he disabled the guards armor

speculation: because he's not as anti-authority as you think? because Tony maybe persuaded him? they are/were friends. they have done each other favors over the years. his role in The Crew wasn't necessarily anti-goverment. besides that, he was kind of at a low point in his life. maybe he saw the new job as giving him a reason to live again/a chance to use that military training.

My guess: to try and change things from the inside.

That is correct. When Pak comes aboard so will Manco.

I've got to agree with both statements. The artwork for the series looks tight, But I will drop it quick time; if it seems like "Terminator Rhodes" is here to stay; and the reason why he became that way is not explained to my satisfaction.

My sneeky feeling is that the reason why he is the way he is; is because of Bishop's actions in MC.
Bishop used some future tech to attack the sentinal units, and the people inside them were changed into humanoid-sentinals. All of this was a delaying devise; to keep the ne-X-t man occupied, while he seeked out the child (yawn).
If this is what they say - then I out!!!

War Machine is AWESOME.
HOWEVER:
When did Rhodes become a Starktech Deathloke?
Is it me, or was there a meeting to discuss how to make B-list African American Men more "Awesome" in the 08?
In that meeting was the concensous to turn them into cyborgs?
Is that what's hot in the streets?
Behold, I gve you two of the BEST AAM's to be given a spotlight in the 90's
Bionic Bishop
and
Cyborg Machine
In Black Panther #22 Rhodes was human, and piloting a Sentinel.
The next time I saw him he was a head master at Camp Hamond (serving as Tony's eyes and ears), and is revealed to be a cyborg during the MVP fiasco.
Given Tony's recent history with friends (Spidey, Thor) Jim better watch his back.
Then again, maybe he's a clone?
How is it that all starktech is comprimised, but the War Machine is operational?

Marvel folks including the writer have said thats the exact reason why War Machine comes into scene. He was not linked to the whole Starktech network in purpose precisely because Tony wanted him as a backup plan.
We will have to wait for the comic to start rolling to answer this and some the other questions surrounding Rhodey.

I think the New Iron Man series makes mention of this, how War Machine is not as state of the art as the IM suit.

I'm wondering if the reason might have something to do with Rhodey's Eidolon Warwear armor. Either some unexpected consequences of wearing it, or else it wasn't as completely destroyed as he thought.

the preview for Avengers the Initiative 16 explains this. there was a back-up program (Stanetech-derived) included in case Stark's systems were compromised. good looking out Tony.

I don't think that is why Rhodey's a cyborg, though. Just why he's still functioning when all Starktech failed.

I'm not a fan of what's been done to Rhodey in the Initiative book, beyond him being War Machine again. There's something that feels cheap about the cyborg business. I wonder if we're going to see that explained by Slott or Gage, or if it's going to be left up to Pak when he takes on Rhodey.
The explanation doesn't matter too much to me. What's done is done. I'm more interested in where Pak will take it than how Slott had it happen.
I'm looking forward to seeing what Gage does with this tie-in. He did some strong tie-in work on Civil War and WWH. I have no reason to doubt this War Machine arc.

I thought something happened to him during Civil War. He was caught in an explosion during a firefight and messed up pretty badly. WHich explains why during the Inititive he turns up all mechanized.

It does seem that way. I hope they have a good explaination for it. I also hopes he gets to have a romantic life unlike Blade and Bishop (with the exception of the Sage excursion).
Currently, Black men (not necessarily African-American men) are not doing to bad in comics. We have following who are all active:
A Skrull -- Xavin
A cosimc character -- 3D Man
Lord Imperial -- Sunspot
Head of State -- BP
Head of Team --Patriot .
Now we have a kick-ass Cyborg (as oppose to one who keeps getting kicked named Bishop).
I am excited for the book and looking to see how much of Rhodey's characterization will resemble Ultimate Nick Fury.

If SHIELD and the Initiative doesn't work out, Rhodey can get a job as a stunt double for Cyborg of the Teen Titans....

maybe that's why they got rid of Deathlok; less competition in the black cyborg department.
