I was wondering if anyone knew if the "book of the dead" which was printed with the 85-88 series is being printed in these copies. I did some looking and it looks like some of the characters are in there but it doesn't look complete. I'm thinking of picking up these comics for nostalgia and reference. I am getting the HC books and were curious as to the extent of coverage I've heard they are only going back to the handbooks printed from 2004 to current.. Any info/expertise on this is appreciated. Thanks!

yes, yes very "collector" of you.. lol I found a list of who is in each of the first 3 volumes and compared it to the incomplete lists I've found from the old 85-88 run and it seems incomplete. Needed a second opinion though before I went on mini buying frenzy.

No.

These volumes contain updated and expanded versions of the profiles that've been published since 2004. That said, some (if not most) of the characters profiled in the earlier series are also covered in these new volumes.

If you want the "Books of the Dead" profiles from the earlier series, they're included in the Essential volumes for OHOTMU and OHOTMU: Deluxe Edition.

Ok, that clears things up for me. Thanks for the input, I think I may pick up those just for the fact some minor characters are covered in those books and may not be covered again for some time..

As others have since indicated, the "Book of the Dead" issues from those old 1980s Handbook runs are not reprinted in the current hardcovers (though some of the same characters are featured).

The hardcovers are a compilation of material from various Handbooks published in 2004-2008, with extensive expansions/updates.

As others have noted, b&w reprints of the old Books of the Dead are available in the Essential OHotMU and Essential OHotMU Deluxe Edition paperbacks.

If you're particularly interested in dead characters, we've got dead folks mixed into the regular A-Z run with everybody else now, so there's plenty of dead people in every hardcover volume. The most recently published HC, Volume 3, for instance, featured the Captain America of the Revolutionary War, Centennial, Coldheart, Collective Intelligence, Crazy Eight (Shappe), Crusher (Iron Man foe), Cypher, Dark Rider, Darkstar (Petrovna), Dead Girl, Deathcry, Death's Head (Page), Deluge, Demogoblin, Destiny (Destine), Destiny (Adler), Devil’s Heart, Jean DeWolff, Diamondback (Stryker), Digger (Vegas Thirteen), Divinity Drake, Doctor Druid, Doctor Glitternight, Doppelganger, Dorma, Drom, Effigy, 8-Ball, etc.
