Cruise Joins Raimi In Sleeper

Tom Cruise and Spider-Man director Sam Raimi are setting up Sleeper, an SF graphic-novel adaptation, at Warner Brothers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Cruise is loosely attached to star in the adaptation of the DC Comics/Wildstorm comic, which Raimi would produce with his Star Road Entertainment partner Josh Donen.

Written by Ed Brubaker with art by Sean Phillips, Sleeper--which ran from 2003-'05--centers on an operative whose fusion with an alien artifact makes him impervious to pain and allows him to pass it on to others through skin contact. He is placed undercover in a villainous organization by an intelligence agency and falls for a member of the group, named Miss Misery.

Sleeper is the third project that Cruise has become associated with over the past two weeks.

YES WSU HAS A MOVIE COMING OUT

An excellent choice in story. IMO it's Brubaker's best work so far. Hope they find someone other than Cruise to play Holden Carver though.

Couldnt agree more Pil, Sleeper is criminally underrated and its also Brubaker and Sean Phillips best works IMO too.

I hope they does the movie but without Cruise. Hope Raimi makes it a good adaption and show people you can make a good comic movie that isnt about superheroes.

Check out Raimi's "The Gift". He can pull of different types of stories. He is really talented so I dont have to much fear that he would mess up the story. He is a good story teller(minus Spidey 3 which was for Venom fans).

Not terribly interested in a Sleeper movie, but there are a couple potential benefits, should it ever happen.

1. DC could combine the Sleeper books, possibly as 2 big paperbacks instead of the 4 small ones. Currently the 4 small books cost about $66. 2 big paperbacks at $20 each would only cost $16 less, and make it more affordable for people interested in the story to buy the complete collection.

2. Perhaps Brubaker and Phillips will get a big chunk of money and be better positioned financially to do more of their original work like Criminal. It's a great book, and who wouldn't love to see what else they can do.

I bet they will re-release both volumes in 2 pbs before the movie comes out. Criinal would be awesome as well but first its up to Sleeper. Then Brubaker can go all Miller and Moore with film adaptations.

I gots more info:
Cruise's Blockbuster Sleeper
Actor in talks to adapt comic with Sam Raimi.
by Todd Gilchrist
August 19, 2008 - On Tuesday, August 19, 2008, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Tom Cruise is setting up an adaptation of the DC Comics property Sleeper at Warner Brothers. Although Cruise currently co-owns United Artists, he is not obligated to generate products for the company, and is discussing the forthcoming comic book adaptation as a collaboration with director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man).

According to THR, Cruise is interested in developing the film project even if he elects not to participate in it himself as a star. As of publication of the story legal rights are currently tangled up in various lawsuits, but his potential partner Raimi (as well as Raimi's partner Josh Donen) have kept an eye on the property for some time and would like to develop it into a film.

At the same time, the expectation is that Sleeper will not only be a future franchise for Warner Brothers, but a starring vehicle for Cruise, who would presumably play the main character, a mortal who fuses with an alien artifact and becomes impervious to pain.

Criminal has had a lot of good buzz (for a quasi-indie) since it came out, so it seems like a repackaging of the previous Brubaker/Phillips crime drama would be a no-brainer.

I'm excited about it also, just a bit nervous having Tom Crusie do it.

Same here. Love the fact that Raimi's involved, but wary about Cruise.

I really don't get all the Tom Cruise hate.

He's easily among my top 3 or 5 favorite actors.

I couldn't care less about his scientology and craziness, it's hard to argue with The Color of Money, A Few Good Men, Eyes Wide Shut, Mission: Impossible, Minority Report, Collateral, Jerry Maguire, Rain Man, Interview with a Vampire, etc. etc. etc.

Raimi on the other hand, i'm not sure about. The dropoff in quality from spidey 2 to 3 was ridiculous, hopefully he will return to form.

I'd slit my wrists and rip my eyes out if that were the case. They need a bad ass hottie for this femme fatale role.

A Sleeper movie? Excellent.

Sam Raimi and Tom Frelling Cruise on a Sleeper movie? That is a mismatch that makes putting Jeph Loeb and Joe Madureira on The Ultimates seem like a sroke of brilliance.

I like Sam Raimi a lot, but never in his whole carreer has he made anything that even hints that he might be able to do a good noir film.

I don't have that issue, as I've only seen 1 and a half of Cruise's movies.

But after taking time to learn the truth about Scientology, I can't knowingly and in good conscience support anything that they're involved in, especially as he is such a major player in it. It's a major part of why I stopped watching The Simpsons, after learning Nancy Cartwright (voice of Bart Simpson) is a Scientologist and donated something like 20 million dollars to the Church, which supports harassment and litigation of any and all critics, demonizes psychology, run prison camps (look up 'RPF'), and has attempted on multiple occasions to infiltrate and steal from US government buildings (look up 'Operation Snow White').

It's a shame, because otherwise I'd love to see this movie. But Tom Cruise is really the one and only thing that will keep me away.

lol, you don't have that "issue?"

I don't see it as an issue.

Not watching certain movies because they have scientologists isn't even remotely worth it to me.

I wouldn't be able to watch John Travolta movies(pulp fiction???), will smith movies(he donates, at least), tom cruise movies, that 70's show, simpsons, listen to Beck, etc.

I'm not all that religious and I'm not going to let shit like that bother me/deter me from watching great movies...

Do what you will, I'm sorry if you can't forget about actor's outside lives in regards to this while watching their work, I can and it's great. And they're still getting that check from the movie studios if you don't see the movie.

Actually, I can't think of anyone more suited to play TAO than Tom Cruise.
Sadly, I fear he'll be playing Holden.

By issue, I meant that I haven't watched that many Tom Cruise movies. The few I have I didn't particularly care for anyway. So it's not like I really lose sleep over not supporting his movies, as I never really did anyway.

And it's not even about religion. If they want to believe that the ghosts of dead aliens are the cause of everyone's problems, more power to them. It's more about them doing unethical and outright illegal things, and suing the crap out of anyone who dares call them out on it that causes opposition to them. While many other religions have also done terrible things, both in the past and present, they usually don't attack criticism nearly as much as the CoS does.

And while they might still get paid by studios whether I watch/listen or not, at least it won't be coming from my pocket.

It won't be coming from your pocket either way. The only thing you're doing is giving up potential enjoyment of watching Pulp Fiction and other classics.
