some decent stuff this month.
i'm getting:
astonishing x-men: ghost boxes 2
cable 8
uncanny x-men 504 (nice cover)
wolverine 69 (symbiotic mole men?)
x-factor 37 (easily cook's best x-factor cover yet)
x-force 9 (my favorite cover of the bunch)
x-men: legacy 218
x-men: manifest destiny 3 (ramos makes colossus' new costume look okay)
also, young x-men's cover is by michael ryan, not yanick paquette as the solict says.

So... New Exiles will be seeing an alternate Misty Knight and Iron Man at some point soon.
Hey, at least it's not Sue Richards again.
Wolverine meets a vengeful X-girlfriend in Chinatown... yeah, that could be a handful of villainesses.
And... Emma's holding a baby with the power of the Phoenix in it. You don't suppose she'd smother it with a pillow, do you?

Nice! Domino in X-Force. And she and Logan make a pretty hot couple IMO (though I'd still prefer to see him hook up with Dazzler; guess I just like blondes better).
Also, the Deodato, Jr. covers for Wolverine: Origins and X-men: Legacy look great. Really looking forward to this crossover.
Oh, and Wolverine #69 looks amazing as well, but it's a shame that it's going to take until November for it to ship. :frown:

Well, to be fair, he had his claws popped on either side of her neck on that cover (and in the actual issue) whereas in this image he's actually kissing/sucking on Domino's neck. Still doesn't make them a couple, but they will screw again, no doubt.

I willing to guess that she's not oi the active rouster that goes out into the field...probably because she's really not the combatant-type. .
Usually it's the same two emotions, extreme frustration (which everyone has) or the rare exception, where they're just totally constipated, and trying to push out a dook.
It gets old, and when you make everyone feel that EXTREME!!! emotion, it deadens the effect when someone actually should be intensely feeling something.
Thus, why I can't stand it.

Let's see now...
Astonishing X-Men: Ghost Boxes #2 - It's still sorta said that we're doing a fill-in mini simply due to how slow Bianchi is. But it's better than huge delays with no stories featuring the characters. Can't tell much by the solicits though, so we'll see how good it is.
CABLE #8 - While the first arc was mediocre at best, I'll give this one a whirl to see if it improves. Since it's going to feature the actual X-Men and them dealing with Bishop. Maybe Marvel can manage to salvage ole Bishop even just a little bit. Doubt it, but we'll see.
NEW EXILES #14 - Ooooo, Daughters of the Dragon. Always loved CC's writing of the two characters. And it's nice to not see a world without mutants and superhero types. Can't wait for this story arc.
UNCANNY X-MEN #504 - Sounds like it's a packed issue. Nice to see that danglers like Colossus and Shadowcat are finally being dealt with. Also love that we're getting a sidestory of Beast and Angel recruiting folks. Dazzler's new outfit colors on the cover salvage it a bit.
WOLVERINE: FIRST CLASS #9 - Wolverine vs. Shang-Chi? Sounds fun. Shame that there's no mention of Kitty. I hope they arn't planning to turn the book into simply another Wolverine solo book.
WOLVERINE: ORIGINS #30 - Still hate having to pick up this book due to a crossover with Legacy. Especially since it involves Daken. But we'll see how it goes. At least it's only for a couple issues. If I can stand Cable & Deadpool for a couple issues, I can deal with this.
X-FACTOR #37 - Still sticking with the book for now. But I hope that it gets the real Longshot in it eventually. It might salvage it from the bottom of the read pile for me. Darwin certainly isn't going to.
X-FORCE #9 - Not a huge fan of Domino, but at least it's not another member that fits the same generic mold of 'Team Scratch 'N Sniff'. Interesting that he's leading them to Mr. Sinister's lab. Wonder what the deal will be. Especially since we have Ms. Sinister in X-Men Legacy.
X-MEN: LEGACY #218 - Same complaints about Daken. But at least the crossover is a short one. And we'll see Sebastian Shaw and Ms. Sinister as well. That will at least make things tolerable. Plus it's Carey!
X-MEN: MAGNETO TESTAMENT #3 (of 5) - Sounds interesting. Hope that the writer doesn't forget important aspects of Magneto's time in the camps. Such as Mr. Sinister aka Nosferatu and such.
X-MEN: MANIFEST DESTINY #3 (of 4) - Iceman discovers something new about his powers? Ok, taking bets on how long before he forgets them again. Just like he always does when he gets a power increase. And Colossus' butt in the cover art makes Baby Beastie cry.
X-MEN: WORLDS APART #2 (of 4) - Reading this and hoping that we'll see some decent characterization for Storm. And maybe see how much the X-Men really mean to her. Instead of how she flipped them off to go marry Black Panther. Hopefully it ends positive for Storm and X-Men fans.
YOUNG X-MEN #8 - About time we found out about Ink's origins. Nice to see that Anole will be joining the team as well. Unfortunatly I'm not a huge fan of the rest of the team. So hopefully we'll get some roster changes. Or more focus on the old New Mutants team.
Passing on: CAPTAIN BRITAIN AND MI13 #7, WOLVERINE #69, WOLVERINE AND POWER PACK #1 (of 4), WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN MAGAZINE #1 (Unless it's cartoon related), WOLVERINE: CHOP SHOP, WOLVERINE: MANIFEST DESTINY #2 (of 4), and X-MEN: PIXIES AND DEMONS DIRECTOR'S CUT.

"All right, bub. Gimme my appearance schedule for October..."
"Sure, Mr. Logan! There's your regular solo title, of course. Plus, the usual line-up of team books."
"So that's just UNCANNY, ASTONISHING, NEW AVENGERS and X-FORCE. No prob."
"There's also your side projects. ORIGINS, FIRST CLASS, MANIFEST DESTINY, another FIRST CLASS..."
"Uh huh. Anythin' else?"
"Don't forget cameos! Possibly AVENGERS/INVADERS... maybe a SECRET INVASION appearance..."

Young X-Men - Cover looks neat though I still wish Ink's hair is back. At least we get to see his origin. And adding Anole to the team is a good move though I wonder if he's the only new member?
X-Force - Cover looks cool and Domino being on the team is cool too. But I'm still waiting for that Selene/Wither story...

Does anyone here remember an interview or something of that sorts on here with someone at Marvel hinting or teasing at using Boom Boom again?? If only for a brief appearance I am assuming. This kinda intrigues me. I've only been reading comics for like three years now, so I'm fairly new. But I've never seen her in a comic I've read. I hear she was in NeXtWave and that that character was going to be the same in this possible appearance.

I'm starting to feel the same way towards characters like Cyclops, Emma, Storm, and Wolverine. I don't mind them being in a couple books that I buy from time to time, but I don't like them being in all the books I buy all the time. Hopefully, the Uncanny book will revolve around more of the others than the Astonishing cast with others making appearances on occasion like has been said in interviews. I agree with this, and it seems like this is what Marvel is attempting to do with this book. Characters like Cyclops, Emma and Wolverine really ought to be relegated to more background roles in UXM since they appear in so many other places (especially Wolverine). But having them in the book ensures better sales and allows some other characters to interact with them, which IMO also makes it harder for fans to start viewing Uncanny as a pure "second string" X-men book.

Yes, I don't mind Emma, Scott, Wolverine, and Storm getting a dozen of their own one shots or minis each month if people are willing to buy them. What I don't like is them being on so many team books at the same time. The thing I loved about team books is that they allow lesser characters to recieve character development and come into their own.

The Wolverine thing clearly shows that Marvel is aware of all the backslash because of the many Wolverine titles.
On the other hand it's also most likely a "take that" towards us, since those titles seems to sell well enough to keep making them, while some idiots on the internet (including me) keep complaining about it.
Domino joining X-force was clear since the Uncanny 500 cover was shown. However i like the cover with the posters in the backround showing some former members of the old X-force.

Anole being (predictably) on board is the very reason I've decided to give the book a try for the stand-alone stories in July, October, November and possibly beyond. Whether or not I'll keep it on my pull-list from the next multi-issue arc onward depends on the quality.

a) She's a teenage girl, so she's got the right to some hotness. She may be more the cute kind, but that doesn't mean she can't be sexy at all. And most importantly: she looks like a cute(!), pretty, teenage(!) girl on the cover, so don't overreact, puhwease. We aren't talking Greg Land art here. (That he's drawing her at all is bad enough.) The eyes are off, though.
b) Skottie Young - as well as Humberto Ramos, actually - should only be doing kid/teen team/solo books/stories in mainstream comics. They both excel at them (most better artists suck at them, only a few are better) whilst failing completely at adult heroes. Young is even better at adolescents (IMHO) and even worse at adults. So having Skottie Young, Michael Ryan, the artist who drew the NXM HoM issues or a couple of others on YXM (with good writing to boot) would be awesome, but Skottie on UXM? No, thank you.

Why are the covers for Captain Britain and MI:13 never ready for the solicits?.
Possibly because Bryan Hitch is doing them. And seriously, who the hell is going to tell Hitch to hurry up? It may also be a plot related thing, but you'll notice that the cover usually comes out in time for the full Marvel Universe solicits... Funny that.
Anyway, to quote the solicit:
CAPTAIN BRITAIN AND MI13 #7
Written by PAUL CORNELL
Penciled by LEONARD KIRK
Cover by BRYAN HITCH
Brian Braddock has to make his hardest decision ever, in the room that grants your heart's desire. The power behind the Mindless Ones is revealed. Blade and Spitfire: at each other's throats? And our heroes have to fight their way out of: Hell Comes to Birmingham, part two.
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99
Blade and Spitfire you'd kind of expect. He hunts vampires. She's been hiding that she still IS a vampire for a few decades...
But a room which grants your heart's desire? Are we finally going to address Meggan, I wonder?

His unspoken lolita, Kitty Pryde!
Actually, I loved Pete's mention of Kitty during the Invasion. Some day, I really hope Cornell gets to write both of them... like say in two years when Ellis is exiting Astonishing?
Back to Brian, I do hope it's Meggan, but I'd like to see Cornell fix the "Courtney" debacle somehow too. Meggs *would* at least raise the mutant count to two though!

Lol. True. No that continuity needs fixing, that's for sure. If for no other reason that Sat-yr-9 is Brian's highest profile surviving villain.

The Jim Jaspers from the Jaspers War storyline, after Brian returned to 616, was the 616 version. The guy who appeared in Uncanny #200 was a continuity error.

It just seems to me that right now Wolverine is really owned by New Avengers and Astonishing X-Men. If he turns up in any other book, even his own to a degree, and interacts with any other character it won't ever come to much - because Marvel won't allow the status quo of Wolverine appearing IN those big two books to be affected. It really limits the character.
So what if he appears here, doing naughty poses with Domino? Do we honestly think it'll come to much in the end?
Maybe I'm cynical, or maybe I've just felt let down by too many Wolverine stories in the past...

Exactly! And it seems like a lot of these Wolverine minis and one-shots are just filler stories that Marvel has stockpiled over the years and are cranking out now so that they'll have plenty of stuff out there (and in trades) by the time the movie hits next May. Personally I'm glad, because that way I can ignore the ones that don't look interesting and don't have to worry about getting filler stories in his solo books that I do buy (Wolverine and Wolverine: Origins).
As for him being on so many teams, while I agree it is a bit much to have him in four ongoing team books, I can certainly see both sides of the argument. Putting him on the New Avengers (alongside Spider-man) was obviously a huge success for that entire franchise. And Astonishing is the "All-Star" X-men book, so he's got to be there as well. That brings up X-Force and Uncanny. IMO if Logan needs to be in any X-title, it's this one. This is the team he was born to lead, and the chemistry with him in charge is perfect IMO. Uncanny could really do without him, but I can certainly see why the X-editors and writers want him there. Having said that, he should really just be relegated to the background in UXM, at least IMO.
As for the solo books, I just can't figure out why any non-Wolverine fan would care? Just ignore them and everything will be okay. I promise.

It's just the constant weeping from the corner where continuity is shivering in a fetal ball.
Truthfully, I don't read the solo books, so that part of it is not a big deal. But the more panel space is taken up with Wolverine (and Scott, Emma and other heavily marketed characters), is less panel space for other characters. Other "old standards" that people who are not fans of those character would like to see, and new characters (or even old ones) that need to be developed.

And I don't think anyone is blaming Wolverine the character for how he is being used.
rwsmith
08-18-2008, 04:50 PM
Well, since you brought up budget, there must be a reason why they choose to do all these Wolverine minis instead of focusing on other characters, right? If the return on investment is there, then they would do it regardless IMO.
Are you saying that if they weren't putting all these Wolverine minis out that they'd be putting out more Rogue, Nightcrawler, Colossus, etc., minis? Because I don't buy that. If they thought they would sell well, they would do it regardless. Hell, some of these Wolverine minis don't even sell all that well!
So I change my statement saying you should blame Marvel. You should actually blame the consumers! And don't look at me either. I don't buy all of these Wolverine minis. I generally just stick to the ongoings.

I hear ya, but I do think that part of it has to be the constant shuffling of writers in and out of the main X-men books that has been going on for some time now. Think about it. Every new creative team comes in and wants to use "the big guns." By the time they're tired of them and would normally be getting around to some other characters, they're off the books and someone else is taking over. That could be part of the problem IMO.
Just my $.02.

I agree with Sword... it's not an issue of disliking Wolverine, I really like the character quite a bit. It's more that due to his overexposure, it stifles the character to a degree and impedes any real sense of progress, danger, evolution or growth. He literally can't change in any way, unless given editorial decree from on high and mandated down through who knows how many editors and writers.
The various minis don't bother me much, as they're fluff. It's the fact that he's forced in six ongoing titles that holds the character back imo... that's what actually limits writers when it comes to Wolverine. I prefer Wolverine the character to Wolverine the franchise.

The appearances of Domino in Cable, Anole in Young X-Men (along with the absence of Wolfcub), and Dazzler in Uncanny should make some fans happy. I have to say though, the best news to come out of November is a fill-in artist on X-Factor. I'm not gonna bash on Stroman, but I preferred DeLandro's art during the last arc, and it's cool that he's going to be showing up some more. It doesn't bother me that Wolverine is in so many books. What bothers me is the number of X-characters Marvel has in their posession that can be exploited like Wolverine, but none of them are being used to that capacity.
Wolverine is popular because practically every writer out there has had a chance to use him, and Marvel has taken great strides to cash in on his popularity because of the amount of exposure and attention he's getting. Much like how the media drops the name of "Joe Nobody", and after hearing the name a few times on television, "Joe Nobody" becomes a household name.
Eventually that Wolverine Cash cow will die, so I think they should at least give some of the other x-characters a bigger push than what they're getting. The very least they can do is have a 5 year rotation of characters in the lime light. Or something to that degree. Because eventually it'll be Logan, jumping that motorcycle over the shark tank in the parking lot of the Mansion.

I don't want any other character to be exploited like Wolverine. I just want balance.
Edit: OK, and good Nightcrawler stories.
Edit 2: OK, so I want good Nightcrawler stories more than I want balance.
I keep wondering why instead of just let Jason Aaron continue his run on the Wolverine book with the Manifest Destiny tie-in and make Old Man Logan a mini, which is what it should be, they're doing it backwards...I agree with that. I allways tought Old Man Logan would be much more fitting as a mini series.
I'm going to get Wolverine: Manifest Destiny because Aaron as been great everytime he wrote the guy. I'm thinking about the Power Pack one too, to be honest. With Chris Giarrusso writing it, it will certainly be funny!
Emma's boots are weird as hell in the Ghost Boxes cover. I'll probaly get that one too. I'm undecided about Uncanny.
X-Force, on the other hand, is a must get. That cover... DAMN!! Didn't Choi said he changed the cover to be less risky then the original version he drew?

Some may be underused but reaching a level like Wolverine's its very hard.
He didn't become popular because someone in Marvel said: "Let's push this guy and ignore all the others." He hit it with the fans, it happens.
Marvel, from time to time, pushes a character a bit more. Some do better then others, but, if they see one that has the potencial to sell as much as Wolverine, you can be sure they will milk that cow.

Love the Madrox cover.
also, young x-men's cover is by michael ryan, not yanick paquette as the solict says.
I knew it wasn't Paquette but I didn't see Ryans signature and would never have guessed that was his work. I loved his Academy X stuff but this cover leaves alot to be desired. Rockslide looks horrible and that is quite possibly the worst Dust I have EVER seen. I'm glad to see Victor of course but I don't much care for that line up...hopefully Surge, Magma, Blindfold and Dani are also part of the book going forward.
Why Is Kurt Wearing white??
Yeah, apparently Madame Dodson hasn't looked at his current costume 'cos it was colored that way on their Secret Invasion: X-Men covers too. Likewise, they don't seem to care to keep Pixie's eyes consistant with everyone elses. The Uncanny cover is pretty nice overall though.

I hate myself for really liking the Young X-men cover, stupid awesome Michael Ryan. Stupid awesome Anole, though I'm not sure how he's upside down like that. The creative process is often working the other way these days. Like take CW House of M for instance, the editors came to Gage with the idea. Of course certain fans like myself were lobbying for that story to be told for some time.
"What's gratifying is that editors Bill Rosemann and Tom Brevoort asked me if I'd be interested in writing this one as well, and I was definitely game.

Magneto Testament also came from the Marvel editors. There are few if any writers that are huge fans of Magneto and his family with real power at Marvel today like CC in the 1980s, but there are enough HoM fans were Marvel editors themselves are coming up with the outline of stories and giving them to different writers to execute.
