View Full Version : Does anything offend you?

I've noticed some people (not necessarily anyone here) look down on the simple act of being offended, as if we should accept what we are given and stop complaining as to not make the offender uncomfortable. What do you think? Anyone here get outright offended at something happening in regular life or media/entertainment? If so, what?

Personally, I'm of the mindset that, as far as jokes are concerned, everything is fair game so long as it's funny. EVERYTHING. From rutebagas to rape. It's all in intent and delivery.
That said, there are things that offend me, but I'm not giving away my precious weaknesses.

Any creator in any medium who can't be bothered with basic craftsmanship or who openly shows contempt for his/her audience, especially their intelligence, offends me. Content rarely does.

Stupidity/willful ignorance. Selfishness/self-centeredness. Lack of consideration for other humans (and other things and animals as well).
As far as humor, hey, funny is funny, no matter how "offensive". In fact "offensive" is often far far funnier than the non-offensive. I have no sacred cows as far as humor.

I have nothing against people being offended by something, but what bugs me is the insistance that something should stop taking place purely because it offends an individuals sensibilities.
To make myself clearer, I can get on board with the concept of "I find South Park offensive, so I don't watch it." but I can't with the concept of "I find South Park offensive, therefore it should be removed from our screens." Why spoil something for everyone else just because you don't find it to your tastes.
For me, I'm with Paradox. I find lack of consideration particularly offensive, but as its one of the things that we have to put up with in life, I try not to let it ruin my day.

That pretty much sums it up for me too, although I will add:
-Violence against helpless infants and the elderly
-Smug, self-righteousness
-Persecution of large-breasted women (in comics or real-life)*
-Brussel sprouts
*Yes, I said that with a straight face

I'm rarely truly "offended" unless it's something regarding my family or babies or young kids. Even then, I not so much offended as just plain pissed off.

Being intentionally and transparently obtuse, especially in a discussion or argument.
Look, we *both* know you understand what I'm talking about, but to acknowledge it is to lose face, therefore you keep up with the "I don't understand" bit? Go fuck yourself.
I'm sorry, was that offensive?

There are many things that offend me, that I wish would never occur, that I wish would be bludgeoned off the World Wide Web by respectable administrators:
Negative reviews of The Dark Knight
The word "retarded," especially in reference to inanimate things (e.g., That theory is retarded)
Jokes not involving a positive message for all citizens
Anarchism and not voting
Nature clips featuring predators killing their prey

The word "iggy?"
Offensive.
Except when used in conjunction with "Pop," in which case the offensiveness is all part of the act.

The second phrase contains profanity and is therefore offensive.

Bingo. I love South Park, it occasionally pisses me off because I completely disagree with what they're trying to say, but as long as the bloody thing is funny & is done well I have no issue for it.
My favourite bit of moral insanity is David Blunkett's reaction to the Brass Eye Paedophile Special (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brass_Eye#2001_paedophilia_special)in 2001. Blunkett was 'dismayed' & 'disgusted' by the programme.
For those of you not familiar with our former Home Secretary, David Blunkett is blind. Yes, he did make a tit of himself.

The minute anyone says "That subject is not funny/there are certain things you don't joke about/there are lines that shouldn't be crossed" I know whatever they are talking about NEEDS to be ruthlessly mocked.

and as a general rule, whenever someone says "No Offense," I tend to brace myself for the worse.
There are some issues i am more sensitive too, whenever someone mocks, ridicules or attacks something I care about, or am insecure about, I may get offended.
But it's all a matter of how you react to the offense.

Nature clips featuring predators killing their prey.
Out of curious, why? It's the nature. They kill to survive.
I'm most offended by acts of hate and racism. We're all the same, flesh and bone. Carbon beings.
And there's something more that offend me: when people use kryptonite against me. It makes my inner Hulk come out:biggrin:

This is rare for professional creators, though. (I think.) And those who can't do generally don't last.

I *totally* understand this, but I spend a lot of time at the Marvel boards.
This is a weird one: On the one hand, lets face it, most professional artists are smarter than most of their audience, especially folks producing corporate art that's rigorously content controlled. (TV, Mainstream Comics, Hollywood Movies.)
So you GOTTA talk down a little bit. *Underestimating* tthe intelligence of your audience makes you look like king dweeb of dweebistan, and is probably worse than overestimating, which just gets you blank stares.
Honestly, I think if you're creating mass-media art, you need a smidgeon of contempt and a dash of pandering to make it work.

I don't like things that are offensive just to be offensive. I don't agree with people that think someone else is wrong or stupid for not liking things that go out of their way to be offensive. I couldn't care less whether or not carols mencia is on the air or not I don't watch the show. But I think his comedy is just not funny at all. He just says belligerently unintelligent stuff and then yells at the viewer for not finding his unfunny jokes funny. I don't like anyone who crosses lines just to cross them. No points are being made they just do and say stupid things to get other people riled up. I think it's just dumb and it undermines people who bring up touchy subjects in truly funny and meaningful way.
I don't agree with everything george carlin says, but I like the way he approached subjects. I think that some comedians listened to people who said offensive stuff humorously and figured that the humor was in the offensiveness and were horribly wrong.
