I am looking into buying some Nightwing issues/TPBs and I need some help on picking some good issue's and runs. What are some of the good ones? What about writers? Are any in TPBs? I am going to the Comic book store tomorrow so I need a list. Thanks a lot.

Here's a list from Amazon so you can see what's available and what people had to say about each collection.

I found the Chuck Dixon stories to be the most enjoyable.

The Chuck Dixon stories are best. For a while, they were all being collected. Volumes include the following:
A Knight in Bludhaven (1-8)
Rough Justice (9-18)
Love & Bullets (1/2, 19, 21-22, 24-29)
Darker Shade of Justice (30-39, Secet Filles 1)
Hunt for Oracle (41-46; BOP 20-21)
Big Guns (46-50, 80-Page Giant)
On Razor's Edge (52, 54-60)
Year One (101-106)

this a great image. cover to Nightwing 150 apparently
Only Judas Contract, Year One are key arcs also get Who is Donna Troy (not sure in which TPB it's been collected) it's basically the last time we've seen Dick use his detective skills, which is kind of sad.
As for his ongoing only Freefall is worth getting. Dixon's run is average at best (McDaniel's art made it worse) Devin's run is below average, Bruce Jones run is garbage and Wolfman's run is average. IMO of course.

You weren't paying attention to the Dixon run, where he helps a Bludhaven cop solve a cold case before his retirement.

Gonna have to disagree. Dixon was Nightwing and his stories are the peak of the character. It was the first time I could stand McDaniel and he captured the fluidity of an acrobat born better than anyone has before or since. Though Dixon was obviously burning out at the end (Big Guns collects the book's weakest period), the first three years or so are excellent. Devin's run drove me off the book and Bruce Jones was apparently writing an All Star Batman level of satire in his tenure. Wolfman was, as you say average and Tomasi has only now hit his stride with the character.

So which are the best Dixon trades to start with? Something that will get me hooked, i don't mind reading out of order. I already have Year One. do any feature other classic batman characters prominently?
edit - Darker Shade of Justice sounds alright. yeah? thanks for the link joe27

On The Razors Edge is a pretty good TPB as well. Nothing too momentous story wise, but some nice appearances from Black Canary and Catwoman, plus art from Greg Land when he was actually trying.
And the first few issues, A Knight In Bludhaven are obviously a good starting point.
The first TPB of Tomasi's run, Freefall, should be available soon. That was a good arc.
But, for the love of God, avoid the Bruce Jones OYL run, and I wouldn't recommend Wolfman's issues either.

Order is good because there are are sub-plots and a nice supporting cast and you get to watch them all develop. The only problem is #2: Rough Justice is out of print. and is going for $224 on Amazon and that's where Batman comes to Bludhaven. But I'd recommend picking up #3: Love & Bullets, #4: A Darker Shade of Justice & #5: Hunt For Oracle. And #7: Ties That Bind is good because it's kind of a sequel to Robin: Year One, also something you might want to pick up. And then there's Ties That Bind, which collects the mini-series and one-shot that got the series started.

Did you mean #7 Razor's Edge or #7 Ties that Bind? Also. How it is a kind of sequel to Robin: Year One (which I loved!)?
