View Full Version : Back Into Comics...What Should I Read?

It's been several years since I've even looked at comics but every once in a while I pull out my boxes of old comics and take a look to see how much some of them have increased (or decreased....stupid Spawn #1, why did I think I needed so many?).
Ultimately that leads me back into the comic shop.
It's been a while so what are some of the best DC reads out there now?
My preference is typically individuals over teams and stories that happen on Earth. I prefer a great story over incredible art but don't want the art work to just be mediocre.
So...what would you advise I check out?
What issue would be best to start with so that I don't pick up in the middle of a story arc?
Thanks for any input.

BTW: what's the best place to read info on each comic, what part of the story arc it is, when it comes out, etc.?

Batman by Morrison. Best comic on the stands, for my money.

Batman by Morrison. Best comic on the stands, for my money.
Is there a good (recent) issue that would be a great place to start?
I picked up issue 678 today...just because it was the most recent one and I knew I had liked Batman in the past....got many issues (currently re-reading "A Death in the Family" story arc from the 420s). I noticed that it's part of the "RIP" story arc so it may not be the best place to start.
Thanks for the input.

I know you said "no space" but, the Green Lantern run has been incredible. I never gave a hoot about any of the GL until Geoff Johns' run.
The Sinestro Wars were mindbogglingly cool. Can't really go wrong with Geoff Johns or Morrison.
Given your criterion, I'd suggest Blue Beetle, Manhunter, and Booster Gold (although the last one requires a bit of tolerance for time travel.)
Good starting points for those series are Blue Beetle 29 (Sturges' first issue, although you probably should backtrack some to read Rogers run at some point), Manhunter 31 (the first issue of the relaunch), and the first hard cover collection for Booster Gold (basically, issue 1, as there's only been 12 issues of the series so far.)

I picked up several comics over the last two days just to get a taste of what's out there. The comics I've picked up are: X-Men 500, X-Force Collection of 1-3, X-Factor 32, Astonishing X-Men 25, Justice Society of America 17, JLA 23, Detective 847, Batman 678, Superman/Batman 50, Immortal Iron Fist 17, Hulk 5, Wolverine 66, Nova 9.
I've only read 5 of them so far but as of now:
Wolverine > Hulk > Superman/Batman > Iron Fist > Nova
Hope to read several of the other ones tonight. I'll let you know what I think.
Thanks for all your help.

Read Batman and Detective last night....both of them blew all the others I mentioned away!!!! Absolutely loved the stories (and art as well) in both...can't wait to pick up the previous issues to see what I missed.

Action Comics is pretty great right now, and there are a lot of awesome Vertigo comics coming out right now.

You can pick up any issue of Jonah Hex, and you will understand it and it will be good. I also like Manhunter, start with #31.
House of Mystery and Scalped are good Vertigo reads.
Can't go wrong with Green Lantern.

Green Lantern, 110%. I pretty much ignored the DCU until I decided to give Johns' GL a read. I picked up Revenge of the Green Lantern and The Sinestro Corps War Part 1 and 2 hardcovers on Amazon, I would easily recommend the same to anyone else.

Okay, so, from what I can see, you like dark and gritty with a good amount of action. Might I suggest...
THE AUTHORITY.
The world just went kablooie and the team is picking up the pieces. Also, they are on #1 this month. Now, I must warn you that if you pick it up I will end up seeing you on the Wildstorm boards and that you WILL become a Trades junkie...
But looking at your taste in what is > what, you'll love it.

Add another vote for Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, and Manhunter here! Definitly the best three DC titles right now, imho (especially if you don't want space stuff). They're easily accessible in trades right now too.

In my view DC's best regular monthly (superhero) books are Green Lantern, Action Comics and Batman.
There is also All Star Superman, which is terrific. But Morrisons run is almost at it's end, so you'd want to check that out in trade form. Also Darwyn Cookes version of Will Eisners Spirit was brilliant. His run is over so go get the trades. Check out Cooke's New Frontier too. It's the greatest thing ever.
Also Jonax Hex is one of the best books on the market. The stories are done in one issue and self contained, so you need not worry about what you might have missed, you can jump right in. It is a blood soaked western and the lead character is pretty brutal.
Gotham After Midnight is my second favorite bat book at the moment. It's up to 3 or 4 of a 12 issue maxi series.
And Tor is a fantastic and underrated caveman story with gorgeous artwork.

For Monthly titles I can't say enough about Booster Gold, I really love this series. Great humor, tons of really fun throw backs to the past for fans, it even has booster gaining the respect of batman believe it or not.
A ton of people have mentioned Green Lantern which is really great right now as well but I don't think anyone said anything about GL Corps. Its a really good read with all the different corps soon to be popping up.
A few stories I would recommend picking up in trade are Green Lantern Sinestro Corps War, Batman Under The Hood, and 52. They are really amazing,52's ending sort of sets up the new booster gold title. Batman Under The Hood revives Jason Todd as punisher type character and makes him even more so the black sheep of the batman family. Sinestro Corps war was a great event that can be read over and over.
Anyway those are my recommendations for the current titles in the DCU.

I think #11 comes out tomorrow...is there a good jump on point in the past couple issues? Thanks.

I recommend Manhunter. It got re-launched with #31 two months ago and that issue contains a one or two page recap. It's a great title!

Thanks for all your help over the past several days...it has been greatly appreciated and helped me narrow down my possible comics to collect a great deal.
After spending a full 3 hours in a comic book store today looking at anything and everything (and reading parts of most of them), I left with the following comics:
Action Comics 867, 868
Amazing Spider-Man 565, 566, 567
Astonishing X-Men 26
Batman 677, 679
Cable 6
Captain America 34 Director's Cut*
Captain Britain & MI13 1, 2, 3, 4
Daredevil 107, 108, 109
Detective 846
Fantastic Four 558, 559
Final Crisis 1, 2, 3
Ghost Rider 24, 25
Green Lantern 29, 30, 31, 32, 33
Invincible Iron Man 1, 2, 3, 4
Wolverine 67
X-Force 4, 5
* As your recommendation, I didn't start with 37 and plan to wait until 43. I'll probably pick up the Captain America Omnibus and then hopefully they will compile a book with issues 26-42 (anyone know if this will happen?).
Thanks again for all your help.

I've recently taken everyone's advice about Green Lantern. And they were right:cool: It's my main DC title now.
