Beginning in December, Marvel Illustrated will release an eight-issue adaptation of "The Wonderful World of Oz" with art by Skottie Young and a script by Oz expert Eric Shanower, who spoke with CBR about the project.

I am really intrigued by this and especially the Yound artwork, seems like a real good fit.

I was definitely going to be picking this up anyway, before I read that interview but now I'm desperate to get my hands on it. I can't wait for it to begin. I'm a big fan of the Marvel Illustrated comics anyway but this is looking like it could be the best adaptation yet.

I'm particularly pleased to read Shanower saying...

"We’re keeping everything in, even the parts that are most often dropped from adaptations, like the China Country and the origin of the Winged Monkeys. You’re going to be seeing the Good Witch of the North’s kiss on Dorothy’s forehead, the river-crossing on the raft, the Field Mice, the monster who eats the forest creatures like a spider eats flies, the Kalidahs, and all the creatures the Wicked Witch of the West sends to battle Dorothy and her friends."

Sounds like it's gonna be awesome!!

Skottie Young's art looks fantastic as well...really quintessentially Oz-like whilst being something original at the same time. My only slight gripe would be that I'm not 100% enamoured with his rendition of The Tin Woodsman. Call me a purest but I think that the Tin Man isn't complete without an up turned funnel on his head, just like W. W. Denslow drew him in the original book.

Still, this looks really promising. Colour me stoked.

I dont tend to praise skottie much for his art but i think his style is perfect for this kind of book.

Sweet! I'm a sucker for Oz and/or Wonderland comics!

Young's work looks amazing, and I'm definitely glad to hear they'll be sticking closely to the source material. That isn't always necessary or even the best choice, but I'm very pleased with it in this case.

I was on as soon as I heard Scottie's announcement of the project on his blog. The fact that Shanower's involved sweetens it even more. I'm a huge fan of his Oz graphic novels...everyone should check those out as well.

Not really interested in the Marvel illustrated titles but consider me all over this.

Has anyone read any of the Oz comics that came out in the past. I recall there were a few. One put a horror twist on the whole Oz world I think. I would really be cool with buying a book based in Oz kind of like the continuing adventures of dorothy. I really wonder why they haven't done this in comics before.

The tin man looks more like the "Tick Tock" character.

There have been quite a few, actually:

Oz (Caliber - 21 issues and various minis & one-shots)
Dark Oz (Arrow - 5 issues)
Land of Oz (Arrow - 9 issues)
Oz Squad (Patchwork Press - 10 issues)
Oz Manga (Antarctic Press - 9 issues)
Oz/Wonderland Chronicles (BuyMeToys.com - 3 issues)
Dorothy (Illusive Arts - 7 issues)
Into the Dust (2 issues)
Peter Pan and the Warlords of Oz (Hand of Doom - 2 issues)

These are my favorite non-cannonical Oz adaptations. The art can be a little ropey in places but they're all excellent reads that really capture the essence of the Oz stories, while portraying a slightly darker, more sinister Oz than we've seen before. These comics can be pretty hard to track down though.

Hey, by the way GreatLakesAvengers, I know that you sell comics...I don't suppose you have a Land Of Oz #6 floating around do you? It's the only issue of the Caliber/Arrow Bill Bryan OZ comics that I'm missing.

I just managed to put all of those sets together from cheap bins and comic cons. I'll be reading through them at sooooooome point in my life (I'm currently plodding through Deadpool vol. III). By the way, I've read that the rights have been optioned to those books to develop a movie series based on their take. That'd be very nifty (and would naturally skyrocket the value of those books)!

Confessor: I've also managed to put a lot of these books together for an upcoming ebay launch but unfortunately I don't have that one available. Sorry! I can keep an eye out for you, if you'd like. Otherwise, there's one on ebay now for $4.95 plus $5 shipping.

Oh really?? OK, I'll check it out. It must've only been listed relatively recently, since I regularly check eBay for that issue. Anyway, thanks for the tip-off!

I love Young's art, but to be honest, this just isn't my cup of tea. I might, however, consider this when/if this comes out in tpb format.

See, now here's a place where Scott Young's art works for me. I'm on board.

Brian Bolland would have been perfect for this book! I prefer his photo-realistic art to Scott Young's awful cartoon stuff.

Really?!

Are you serious? Sorry, but I have to say that I would be hard pushed to think of anybody worse to put on this book. Don't get me wrong, I like Brian Bolland fine but not on this type of comic.
