Hello first time poster here and I've recently got into batman after seeing the dark knight. So far ive read the killing joke the dark knight strikes again and the man who laughs. However the bane character in my opinion seems intersting seing as hes obscenly strong but he is smart as well. so if you could point me in the right direction a good bane story id be ever so pleased.

If you haven't read it yet, "Knightfall" is probably the first and last good Bane story.
His appearances since then have ranged from mediocre (his appearances in "Legacy" and "No Man's Land") to dreadful (anywhere he's appeared in the last couple of years).

Both Vengeance of Bane I & II are good , first is the origin of bane , 2nd is after knightfall.
There's also the Bane prestige format one shot after legacy that is decent or the Bane mini series before legacy which sees him matching wits with Ra Al Ghul.

I've enjoyed Bane's expansion into the DCU. JLA Classifieds #17 and #18 were pretty cool. I also liked his appearence in Checkmate.

I enjoyed the Superman: The Animated Series episode where Superman assumed Batman's identity while Batman was missing. Bane plotted to take over Gotham's underworld with Riddler and Mad Hatter as his lieutenants, but Superman took them out easily.
Bane was also in the Batman episode "Over The Edge" but that turned out to be an extended dream sequence. Good story though.
I liked how his relationship with Batman was treated during Scott Beatty's tenure on Gotham Knights. I can't remember the stories too well, but there seemed to be an implication that Batman had accepted that no prison would ever hold Bane and so rather than keep him imprisoned under the watch of guards or an army or whatever, he'd allow Bane his freedom with the catch that he would be under Batman's constant surveiliance. 'You want to travel to the other side of the world to search for your father, fine, but I'll have people watching you the whole time and if you step out of line I'll get involved' seemed to be the unspoken arrangement. My memories might be way off, but that's how I recall those issues. After years of battling the Joker and seeing that prison did nothing to slow him down, and years of facing Ra's Al Ghul and finding out that driving him into the sun or throwing him into the pits of the Earth during an Earthquake were simple exercises in futility, Batman seemed to be trying a different route with his enemy and it seemed to be working. Except, he next showed up in Infinite Crisis breaking spines left and right while shouting "BOMB!" or something stupid. So, it didn't last, but I liked the working relationship he had with Batman when actual thought was put into the character.
I thought Chuck Dixon's Vengence of Bane II was a pretty good story and did expand out the character. The only bad thing about it is that it doesn't really end as it is almost just a setup for the Legacy story line, which is really a follow up sequel to Contagion arc.

yeah, i just actually revisited Knightfall the other day, including vengeance of Bane 1 and the few batman and detective issues right before the x-over and that is a brilliant story...
for years i sort of left it to the side as just 90's junk, but am glad I went back...

I loved Vengeance of Bane II. Good story of rebuilding oneself.

I really wish DC had included both Vengeance of Bane I & II in the Knightfall TPBs, as fans who didn't read the Knight Saga the first time around are likely to be interested in seeing their first post-Knightfall match-up.
Something to consider.

Batman: Bane of the Demon. I loved that mini, too; thought it was on the same quality level as Knightfall and the two Vengeance of Bane stories.
