Hello, I am new to comics and I am just wondering where to begin. I became interested after recently buying the Justice League cartoon on DVD. I am interested in The Justice League as a group and the individuals I am interested in are Superman and The Green Lantern. Any help on what to start with or other characters that are good for beginners would be appreciated. Thanks

First up, if possible get down to the local library, have a browse round "graphic novels" section (as librarians are wont to call comics). Take out anything that looks like fun. Try to avoid buying anything until you've got a feel for the characters, artists, and writers that you like.
Second up... if you like Justice League take a look at Darwyn Cooke's "The New Frontier". Darwyn is one of the most celebrated writer/ artists in comics. "The New Frontier" is his take on the early days of the Justice League. I think its a terrific piece of work, but also easy and enjoyable to follow. (PS Don't get too uptight... as I did about portrayal of Superman in first half of story... it all comes out fine in the end.)
ummm go to a comic book store...pick up what looks cool....if you become confused when reading it then..... www.wikipedia.com

That doesn't work for everyone...
If you wanna restrict yourself to advice that works for every human being, I'm afraid you'll have pretty empty posts to make.

You can't go wrong with Gail Simone, Grant Morrison, or Geoff Johns if you're a new reader in the DCU. And they're easily available on trade paperbacks form.

I would just recommend diving in and trying everything you can. Take these people's suggestions (from what I saw they're mainly all pretty good). DC can get a bit confusing when it comes to things like pre- and post-Crisis, but don't try to take things too seriously and just have fun.
Aside from some of the stuff people have already suggested, I would recommend Geoff Johns' JSA. They're just great superhero stories.

If you like Green Lantern and/or the Green Lantern mythos in general I would highly recommend "Green Lantern: Rebirth". The story and artwork are absolutely amazing and Geoff Johns really brings you into the universe of the Green Lantern Corps, the Guardians, and the big picture of what it is they do for the universe.

Dude, it doesn't get better than this. THAT's how you get someone into comics.
BTW, I highly recommend you leap at this opportunity, Marc's Manhunter series is great!

Johns' Green Lantern has been amazing, was never into GL before I read rebirth. To be honest anything by Johns is a safe bet, his stuff has brought me more and more into DC and away from Marvel.
Gail Simone is also brilliant, her Birds of Prey stories are some of my favourite comic book stories. Not read her Wonder Woman stuff but plan to pick up the first trade.
At the end of the day though it comes down to personal preference so I'd suggest hitting the library/comic shop and just taking a look at whats grabs you. That is how I got into comics and I am sure the same goes for most comic readers.
