View Full Version : Robin #176

This book--due to be released on August 6--is another RIP tie-in, like the preceeding issue. Once again, the creative credits have changed from what was originally solicited:
It is written by Fabian Nicienza and drawn by Joe Bennett. If it is released with the originally solicited cover, that cover was done by Freddie Williams II and is reproduced below.

I have no idea, but I suspect Fabian will go off in his own direction.

New direction and the start of a major new storyline.
Please check out DC's Robin message board or the Batman board at comicbloc.com for extensive QnA's I've been having with readers for weeks now.
Also, a Newsarama interview was just posted today with further thoughts.
And I'll always pop by here when board interest warrants interaction!

While I think Dixon's run was - cute? (better than Outsiders, by a lot). and I'm sad to see him go before Cluemaster was brought back, I'm really glad Fabian Niceza's on board and I hope he stays on board for a long time. I've got the whole Cable & Deadpool, and I picked up Fabian Niceza's issues of Nightwing (the highlights of the crossover).
On the other hand, if Fabian Niceza was on some other Bat-book, I'd be buying two books where before I'd be buying one....
I'd go to the Q&A at the DC forums, but I heard from the kids in the neighborhood that those forums are just embarrassing.
Joe Bennett's artwork was a bit dissapointing. It was certainly good in it's own right, but after 52, I was really looking forward to owning more of his material, and this? Not so great. But it's not bad enough that I won't give him another shot on his next project.
Overall? Pretty sound issue, and that's coming from a guy who doesn't read the normal Batman ongoing. (Maybe I'll collect the whole thing in TPB or whatever later).
Still, I would appreciate if the post-RIP issue had a big huge solid piece of recap to explain Bruce's fall that regular Robin readers missed out on.

I suspect this was drawn in record time, since the book was reassigned at the last minute. Not really fair to judge Joe on the basis of this (though I didn't really have any major problems with it).

Joe drew not just one issue, but two, in record time and the fact we were able to have both issues come out so close together and so quickly from when we were brought on is a testament to how hard he busted his ass to get them done.
I've gotten to work with Joe a few times now -- back when I wrote Hawkeye for Marvel and now here -- and he is a pleasure to work with! Hope we can do it again soon!

Not read Robin regularly for a while might pick this up though as I like the character and I enjoyed Fabian's Cable and Deadpool alot.

Chuck was one of my favorites, and Tim/Robin is my favorite. I'm hoping we see great things from Fabian, not only for Tim but for Steph as well.

I thought it was pretty good, considering the time frame and that it's a tie-in.
It might've made more sense if I'd read any of Batman: RIP because parts had me puzzled. Or maybe not. That might be the point behind the story.
I do like that although Steph is back (which I love) that their relationship isn't just back to being hunky-dory. I do like a bit of drama between them.
The cover is a bit different.

what's different about it? something added or removed (like with TEC 846 where Catwoman was added?)

In the original art, Penguin is standing over Batman's body, in the one produced it's spoiler. and the words "The Spoiler's Secret" is added to the cover.

Well, I thought the two issues worked well together. It has been the best RIP tagline outside of Batman so far as it goes back to the beginning of Grant's original beginning, the cave during 52, and also Bruce is missing and Robin feels its his job to find him, and help him, or become him. It was really egosod.
Anrd it gets no better thoen "Trust me, it'd be a lot worse if you were wearing green panties. Nice Fabian!

Hey guys I've been to the comic book store and several people looking at the Robin #176 commented that Robin was drawn looking like a Hispanic. I'm looking at the penciller, and it was Joe Bennet. Now I liked Joe Bennet's previous works on Birds of Prey, but is it true that he draws Robin looking like a Hispanic ?
Do you guys interpret his drawing of Robin the same way ? How so ?

I sure didn't think so. If the art wasn't quite what people are used to, it's probably because these issues were produced in record time.

Hey what's up Capt. Jim. Perhaps because I am in New York City, which is the melting pot in the USA. There is a sizeable hispanic community in the 5 boroughs, and it was in Manhattan that these three gentlemen where discussing how Bennet draws Robin looking like a Hispanic.
Of course I didn't mind then. Then I was over by a Queens store to pick-up a box of comic books I had them stored for a few months and there was a couple of guys browing the "Batman Family" books, and I asked them how they liked Joe Bennet doing the pencils on Robin. They said it was cool except that Robin came out looking like a (derogatory four letter racist word starting with the letter "S" and ending with the letter "K").
So maybe that's how it came across to some.
Personally, it didn't matter to me, because I liked Joe Bennet's work back in the Birds of Prey when he worked on it. If Bennet becomes the regular penciller for Robin, I might just as well pick up the series on his work alone.

Bennet only did #175 & 176. Beginning with #177, Freddie Williams II returns as artist.

I personally liked Robin's artwork in his RIP storyline. Nice to see his fight coinciding with Batman 679.

I was expecting something really slapped together, but actually quite liked the issue.
It reminded me of Dixon's writing but with a little more meat or something. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does when not constricted by the events of R.I.P.

It was a lot better than the previous issue. I might keep Robin on my pull-list after all.
