Yeah I know I've started this thread a day early, but I didn't want this post to go in a thread that everyone will stop reading tomorrow...

Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes v3(sort-of) - Strange Visitor from Another Century - This was a decent volume - though not quite as good as the first two. Barry Kitson's art seems to be taking on a slight Kevin Maguire-esque touch which I quite like.

Earthboy Jacobus - One of Doug Tenapel's better books I though. The Christian stuff gets in the way a little bit. It's hard for me to care about someone losing their faith when as far as I'm concerned, that's someone coming to their senses. It didn't spoil my enjoyment too much though.

JLA/JSA: Virtue and Vice - Competently written, but uninspiring? This must be a Geoff Johns book! Pacheco's art was okay, but no-where near the quality of his work on Arrowsmith.

Green Arrow v9: Road to Jericho - Not a bad book. Scott Macdaniel's art isn't half as good as it used to be though. Generally I buy more books than I have time to read. I think this is probably as far as I'll go with Green Arrow.

Ultimate Iron Man v1 - I was very impressed with this. I know some people are put off this because of Orson Scott Card's extreme right-wing views, but none of that showed in this story. It was just some damn good sci-fi stuff. Definitely one of the better Ultimate books. The only annoying thing is I didn't realise it was going to be "to be continued".

I polished off FABLES Vol 10 - WOW! This was easily one of my favorite volumes. Totally amazing. I'm glad the next collection will be up for grabs soon.

Conan Vol 5: Rogues in the House - Very cool I just LOVE this art. Conan is such a badass in this story. Throwing chicks into poo, fighting monsters, stealing, drinking. He's my hero. :)

Invincible #51 - OK, the new costume was better than expected. The colors from the new guy really popped off the page. This is good reading.
Image Monster Pile-Up #1 - Also, lots of the fun. Sure hope that folks who haven't read 1~7 of Astonishing Wolf-Man read this before the regular series/TPB as it spoiled the first arc. The Perhapanauts story was the best!
Wolverine #66~67 - Damn you Mark Millar and your crazy ideas! I think that I am hooked. Beautiful art from Steve McNiven. Is this an "elseworlds" type of book?

Kind of... but it will have some kind of tie to Millar's other books out now: 1985 & FF.

Three universes collide this year during writer Mark Millar’s run on exciting Marvel titles. Beginning with his newest epic tale, 1985, Millar lays down the foundation for things to come as Marvel: 1985, FANTASTIC FOUR and WOLVERINE all intertwine in a very big way. After his run on Ultimates, and his unforgettable blockbuster Civil War, Millar explores remote and familiar corners of the Marvel Universe in ways that only the man behind such past blockbuster series could. Watch as these stories come to life with the help of long time Ultimates collaborator Bryan Hitch, Civil War’s Steve McNiven, and renowned film and comic artist Tommy Lee Edwards.

Noble Causes v1: In Sicknesss and in Health - I re-read this now that I've got the books that follow. Still good!

Noble Causes v2: Family Secrets - Again, good stuff!

Noble Causes v3: Distant Relatives - The art takes a real nose-dive in quality for this book, but from what it says they suddenly lost the original artist who did a good job on the first few pages and had to get someone quickly. Nice ending to this one!

Noble Causes v4: Blood & Water - The art on this volume is probably the best of the bunch - very nice in a kind of Rob Haynes meets Kevin O'Neil kind of way. This volume benefits from having a longer story rather than a short story and loads of backups.

Noble Causes: Extended Family v2 - Some fun stories from other creators. Some good some not so good.

The Flash #242 - I'm still not fond of the art, but Tom Peyer's doing a great job - I'll be sad to see him go. It seems The Flash has been bad for so long that they've lost the ability to recognise when someone's doing a great job.

Now I've just got to get Noble Causes v5 before I have to decide whether to jump over to the cheaper black and white archives. Does anyone know if the second archives volume ever came out?

One thing that I didn't quite get in Noble Causes is this...
When Liz goes off at the end of vol 3 to a world where (from what I gather) it was her who died instead of Race, that worked well for an ending. In the next volume, however, everyone is acting like Race has been brought back from the dead, but he hasn't. This is a different Race. I'm assuming (maybe wrongly) that the comic is set in the world he originally died in and the one from the other reality has come to live with Liz. If that's the case though, why does he act like the parents in this reality are his parents? It all feels wrong to me.

The Wolverine arc is only 6 issues? Bummer! Looking at the map of the US in the first issue of the arc, I assumed that he could make it 12 issues. Guess not.

Actually, it's an 8 part story. The issues listed above also don't have every FF issue listed that Millar is doing.

and there's more...

Superman: Up, Up and Away - Some of the best Superman stories I've seen for years. Nice art two from two artists who's styles are similar enough that I barely noticed the changes.

Superman: Back in Action - Unfortunately this story didn't grab me nearly as much. It was still better than anything from the Loeb/Kelly/Casey era though and the art was still good. I have to say though, packaging up a three issue storyline and then padding it out to 6 issues with old silver age reprints is a disgrace. DC should be ashamed of themselves. I'm not saying they're inferior to the main story - I've lost my taste for Silver Age comics so I didn't read them. I just think that forcing someone who wants to follow the new stories through trades to buy something else at the same time is a shameful money-grab. They should have just stuck those three issues on the end of the previous trade or the beginning of the next one.

Birds of Prey (Simone) v7: Dead of Winter - This was an enjoyable end to Gail's run. Good art too. A definite step up from the Ed Benes work that some of her previous volumes had. It's a shame that TPTB didn't see fit to make that four page panel at the end into a fold-out page so you could see them all as one image.

Demo - Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan doing 12 unconnected stories about people with special powers - except for the issues where they decided to ignore that theme (or make it so subtle that I couldn't spot it). There were some good stories in here and a few weak ones (especially the final issue), but overall this was quite good.

Fantastic Four (Waid) v4: Hereafter - Now that's all a bit silly. Waid handled it all in such a light hearted way that he just about gets away with it though. Of course it goes without saing that Ringo's art is good as ever.

Are these the issues that started Nicola Scott's run on the book? If so, I completely agree with you that it was a significant step up from when Benes was on the book. Although, truth be told, I really enjoyed the issues drawn by Joe Bennett before he was shuffled off to 52.

It's a shame that TPTB didn't see fit to make that four page panel at the end into a fold-out page so you could see them all as one image.

I think that the printing for these pages was the same as the monthly book as well and that was my thought as well - why wasn't this printed as a fold-out splash?

Ultimate Spider-Man #124 - Immonen's design of the Beetle was great. I really loved the sound effect that was associated with the Beetle's flying. Still not feeling the Venom/Eddie Brock parts of this arc yet.
No Hero #0 - A good start from Warren Ellis and I'm more than likely to check out either future issues or the TPB.
Guardians of the Galaxy #3 - Words can't describe how much I am enjoying this book. It is just that good!
Green Lantern #33 - Another book that is very good from month to month. Looking forward to eventually getting back to the present in the storyline.
Venom: Dark Origin #1 - OK, I got it, Eddie Brock has been habitual lier since childhood. Is this mini-series going to be a ret-con? Wasn't really feeling the Medina art in this issue.
Youngblood #4 - Still greatly enjoying the art on this book even though it felt like the initial arc was abruptly cut short. Or maybe it was just me.
Dynamo 5 #14~15 - It is so good to read a couple of issues of this book in one sitting. I'd love to convert toTPB but fear that every single issue bought counts towards to the continued health of this book.
Gemini #2 - Continuuing my tour through the Faerberverse. The art is still too cartoony for the story being told and for my tastes.

08-18-2008, 04:21 PM
Ultimate Origins #0 - Butch Guice's layouts on this issue were outstanding! However, I'm still waiting for something exciting and interesting to happen.
Robin #175~176 - I'm sure that Fabian Nicieza will do a great job following Dixon but these 2 issues didn't convince me to continue reading - I'm sure that it has something to do with the R.I.P. crossover.
Catwoman #81 - Still bummed that this book is getting canceled. The art team is top notch and Pfeifer has strung together a good 30+ issue run on the book.
Invincible Iron Man #4 - Probably my least favorite issue this opening arc. Larocca's art was more distracting than usual so that may have been my reason for not really enjoying this issue.

I'm finally catching up on some issue after not going to the LCS for a month. I still get my DCBS books, but I had my Core Marvel stuff to get to. I've read:

ASM - I liked this last arc, but Jiminez may be my least fav artist on the book
DD - Oh man... why Ed, WHY!?!?!
Hulk - What a SMACKDOWN!
Tarot - Cool issue. She took a beating, which is kinda new.
New Avengers - The Cap issue, was ok. Not as cool as the ones leading up to it.

I've read a bunch of other stuff too, but I'm a bit hung over and can't remember it all. I've got my DCBS box waiting for me with SI #5! WOOHOO!

I also feel that the art from Billy Tan was a step down from the previous issue that he drew. My big issue with the Avengers books right now is that I am a bit tired of the SI back story.

Aaarrrggghhhh - my box has yet to arrive!
It's been tough getting used to not having that instant gratification of going to the LCS on the Wednesday that the books are released. How long have you been using DCBS? How long did it take you to get used to the delay in reading the books?

For the most part I'm loving the back story, as I WANT to know when and how stuff happened. In this issue, just finding out what was up with that Cap was enough. I didn't need to know the other details. But it puts me in a position to think certain things about the rest of the crew.

Yeah, it's a tad bit tough but I also don't have to head down to the shop every week now. The only time it's tough is with events like this. Civil War, Annihilation, WW Hulk, etc... were all tough. It does make me that more excited when the box arrives though!

I've been using them for over 3 years. Can't say enough positive things about 'em.

Oh - if you think this is bad, I've got a buddy that (to save $) only gets the 1 shipment a MONTH!

The wait for Secret Invasion #5 and Amazing Spider-Man has been tough. Until I moved a month ago, I used to get one shipment from DCBS per month - mainly books that I couldn't justify reading except for the online discount - and got the majority of my books from my LCS. Now I am testing the waters for mail order with weekly shipping mainly because I am not in the mood to seek out a new shop.

Usually check it once a week (if not more) to see what is on my packing list.

Have you been having any issues with DCBS? In the past month, I've had this problem with getting a copy of the Brand New Day Extra. I pre-ordered War Heroes #1 and was told that they were shorted by Diamond and that a 2nd print was the only thing available to me. I've also been told that they ran out of Image Monster Pile-Up #1 as well and it is on back order. What is the point of my pre-ordering books if I am not going to be guaranteed to get a copy?

I will admit that it hasn't been all bad news with DCBS. I have been using them for 2+ years and have been quite pleased with their flexibility in allowing me to request a certain cover when books ship in a 50:50 ratio.

Nope, no issues for me. I didn't get MI:13 this week, but there was a note that said it'd be in my next shipment. That's happened 1 -2 times and they've been good about that in the past.

Sorry to hear about your issues w/ issues. GOOD LUCK!

On a side note - I had a freind go to MIdtown on Sat and met Millar and Tony Harris. Nice guys, and he had fun!

Yesterday I read: Interagents #1 by Dwight L. MacPherson

You can find it here: http://www.wowio.com/users/product.asp?BookId=5286
(for free & for 99 cent download. awesome)

Awesome comic. The story is very good. Tight, quick, very un-Marvel/D.C. The team is together in the first issue! lol. Oh and the artwork is great! A must-read imo.

Today I'm reading: MacPherson's Basement of Horror

You can find it here: http://www.wowio.com/users/product.asp?BookId=5144

With this last batch of comics read, I'm now ready to tackle the run of Geoff Johns Action Comics that I have been collecting!

B.P.R.D. The Warning #1 & 2 - Really good to have Arcudi & Davis back for this arc. The second issue has a great cliffhanger. I'd really like to make a switch to trades for this book but fear that the wait in between releases would kill me!
Perhapanauts #3 - I'm going to admit to loving the self-published stuff, not really enjoying the Dark Horse stuff and now back to loving this book. I loved the gremlins story that concluded this issue.
Amazing Spider-Man #567 - Really? Kravinoff's daughter? Not sure I can agree with the family tree that was on the last page. Am I reading it correctly? The time period for Kraven's Last Stand is 2003? It is also strange to think that Phil Jimenez has been my least favorite of the BND artists so far.
Astonishing X-Men #26 - It was a fun ride while it lasted and this is definitely not your father's Whedon/Cassaday X-Men so I think that I am going to bow out with the next issue (which I have pre-ordered).
Fantastic Four #559 - Didn't think that Millar & Hitch could do better than the great McDuffie run that preceded it but I am really enjoying these stories. Very interested to see where the next issue leads us.
Secret Invasion #5 - It's been slow in parts but I have been greatly enjoying this book. Now that it appears that the heroes can determine who and who isn't a skrull, it appears that Bendis is going to ramp up the action.

It's kinda cool watching him rip into people. The artist that did the Gravediggers scenes needs to get his own book. I can see him doing a Nova fill-in sometime.

Action Comics #844~846, 851 & Annual 11 - This is the "Last Son" arc that was maligned for its shipping delays. That being said, it reads pretty well in one sitting with some really nice art from Adam Kubert.
Action Comics #855~857 - This was the "Escape from Bizzarro World" arc. In the past, I hated to read issues filled with Bizzarro speak but these 3 issues weren't so bad. Overall, not bad. I wasn't wowed by it but did like the art from Eric Powell and really liked the interaction between Pa Kent and Clark/Superman.

After reading these issues last night, I am really looking forward to getting to the Legion arc with Gary Frank art tonight!

Fallen Angel (DC) v2: Down to Earth - Another good volume. I hope DC finishes trading this series. I like the artist too - his style's nicely reminiscent of Peter Snejbjerg

Invincible v6: A Different World and v7: Three's Company - Another good couple of volumes.

Ultimate Daredevil & Elektra v1 - I quite liked this. It lacked the darker side of Elektra that I'm used to, but the story and art were both good.

Peter Parker, Spider-Man: Civil War - The first half of this book was good. The second half with May, Mary-Jane and Black Cat getting all worried was a bit boring.

Challengers of the Unknown: Stolen Moments, Borrowed Time - Howard Chaykin's revamp. I enjoyed it. I always like his art (except when he paints) and it was very much in line with his Blackhawk and Shadow revamps.

Ultimate Elektra: Devil's Due - This was an improvement on Ultimate Daredevil + Elektra v1. Elektra took a darker turn which was needed. The only disappointment was how easily she took out Bullseye.

My girlfriend is reading my tpb of this now. I'd like to re-read it too, but so much to do - so little time...

I read Kirby's OMAC 1-2 yesterday. Art, of course, is killer. The story is weird but I like it. Can't wait to see where it goes. I want to get this done before the DEMON Omni shows up.

I had a DCBS box waiting for me at home, and I read:

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #4 - an SI tie-in, even though they are faaaaar from Earth. I liked this one! Art was still killer and there's a lot of plot threads being weaved here. The Starhawk part, the Warlock coccoon, whatever's going on between the dog and Rocket Raccoon, etc... Great book!

Iron Man #32 - Last part of the 4-part story. I kinda liked this. It was Tony working as both head of SHIELD and as IM a lot. Full of action and other interesting tidbits. After this it's all about War Machine!

1985 #4 - Pretty cool. There actually seems like a bit of hope now. The end was cool, but like most of this art the chase scene was a bit muddy. Oh - and for all the people who jump on Greg Land for the photo-refrencing, you have NO IDEA how much Tommy is using statues for his refrences. It's been done before by a bunch of artists, but this is just obvious and lazy.

Surprisingly, this was the first book that I read last night when I got my shipment from DCBS! Guess it is true that this book has risen to the top of my must read list in a very short time. Yesterday I finished up the X-Factor / She-Hulk x-over tie in, X-Factor #34. Eh, it was ok. I like the Darwin and Monet tension but other than that it was fighting for no good reason and the art kinda irks me.

X-FACTOR SPECIAL LAYLA MILLER - Was MUCH better. I know she's barely a mutant with that freakish power she has, but when it's written so well it's the coolest thing ever. No, she' s not back in the current time - yet - but this is a great future glimpse and it had some great parts to it.

Moon Knight #21 was good. Not much T-bolts action, but that'sok because we see the pressure SHIELD is under, what they do to Marc's friends and what he's up to.

YOUNG X-MEN #5 - Was good. Finally everything comes together. I wonder what the angle this book is going to take after this arc.

TRUE BELIEVERS #2 - I really like this book. Where is the press for it? Paul Gulacy is putting out the best art I've seen from him in ages. This book is filling a hole in the Marvel U. that we didn't know was there. Great hook, established heroes are appearing, it's tied to current continuity, has action, a bit of humor, is sexy, and you can read 'em 1 at a time. What more do you need?

This made me laugh. I had the exact opposite reaction!
I loved Firebreather and Perhapanauts... but then those are the series that I am already buying.

I don't get me wrong: I did like Firebreather and Perhapanauts (probably Perhapanauts more then Firebreather). Its just that, Wolfman and Proof grabbed me a bit more. I had no idea what was going on with Wolfman since I had only read issue #1. So, Wolfman was definitly right when he said that the short story spoiled the first arc for me. lol. Interesting things going on with Wolfman for sure (hmm. may have to get a trade sooner or later).

And Proof, well, I already liked issue #1 (read it online). I enjoyed the little story in Monster Pile-up too and so I went out and bought issue #11. And enjoyed that.

Now I have my comic guy getting me the trade for Proof.

Actually, as much as I like Wolfman, Firebreather, and Perhapanauts, none of them have really made buy an issue of the regular comic yet like I did with Proof.

Anyway, Monster Pile-up was just a really cool comic. I wish they'd do more sampler comics like this.

Now, what I read last night: Ultimate Spiderman #124 & 125. Both were good.

I also read Chapters 6 & 7 of Watchmen today. Started reading Ch. 8. Wow. This comic gets better and better. Now, I finally get why people love Watchmen.

You might not have noticed yet, but Watchmen is actually a story in 6 parts (and was released this way in France) and then each part is broken down into two issues so if you're going to be reading two issues a day you might be better off reading 5+6 then 7+8, 9+10, 11+12

Hmm. Thats true. I'm finding, though, as I continue to read this, it gets harder and harder to put the book down after two chapters. lol. I started out reading just one chapter, then two, and now its either two or three. This book just better and better.

I'm definitly going to give it a second read, though, so I'll keep what you said in mind. :)

In any case, Watchmen is brillant. I never got the hype around the book till I read it. I have say, I thought other hyped books like Killing Joke and the Dark Knight Returns were disappointments. Watchmen, though, lived up to hype! Heck, I think its gone past the hype. I love it. Just a great graphic novel.

Sooner or later, I do want to read V: For Vedetta (liked the movie). And I want to read some of Moore's ABC stuff too. I really liked the previews of Tom Strong, Top Ten, and Tomorrow Tales that I read online.

Anyway, I read more Watchmen last night.

I hope my Proof trade comes in next week. Looking forward to reading that book!
