hey guys i just got my hands on and finished reading both of wagner's new batman trades, monster men and the mad monk...
I just wanted to know your guys' opinion on them. I for one thought that monster men was stronger then mad monnk, mad monk was a little more scattered but i did enjoy both of them as it seems like wagner understands batman's character as to millers year one batman (which i loved).
Also, any speculation on his third batman coming out, because the mad monk ended very suspiciously with a possibility of the joker being in the next one????

Matt Wagner's Trinity is really good as well. Much better than Busiek's abysmal weekly series. Not sure if we'll be seeing a third installment of the Dark Moon Rising series anytime soon.

Monster Men did beat Mad Monk for me, but I enjoyed Trinity the most. Wagner is a very good writer and an amazing artist, probably my favorite Batman creator. If he did another Batman story I would like to see him keep up with himself and do a story that isn't very exploited.

Basically The Man Who Laughs by Ed Brubaker begins where Mad Monk ended. That would be the closest thing to a sequel.

Personally, I like The Golden Age Stories Better, but that's just me. Between the two, I liked Monster Men Better, Hugo Strange is severly under used now a days and Wagner really knows how to use him, Mad Monk on the other hand, was really boring, and I didn't like that Batman jumped to the supernatural so fast by qouting Sherlock Holmes, He was right, but I would have liked a more Detective.

Matt Wagner is a Batman creator i always get his Bat series of. I like how he keeps making good minies.
His art and his understanding of Batman and his world is very good.
Monster Men was better to me too. I liked seeing Strange play a role.
I hope he makes a third Batman series soon.

I didn't like one more than the other..I enjoyed them both as a whole. Felt a little gipped with Catwoman's appearance--she was in the solicits but only appeared in two pages.
Oh well, it was good and it sort of bridges the timeline between Year One and The Long Halloween.

Monster Men was a little better than Mad Monk. But I really enjoyed both. Matt understands Batman and his world well. I'd very much welcome a run on a main title by Wagner.
The first crossover arc b/w Batman and Grendel is a great read.

I also read these books for the first time recently, and thought they were pretty good. I didn't really like Wagner's art for it though, because I thought it looked a little too cartoony for such serious storylines. But I did like way it updated classic stories and continued the story of Year One.

a re-release of his Batman: Faces TPB came out recently also which is a pretty good Two Face mini he wrote.

In my opinion, the art and color scheme (of Mad Monk) is very similar to that of Year One.

They're good stories but it's a shame that something about them makes them a little boring to me. and I have to agree with Pyro on the art, the cartoony style is out whack. I also agree that the intention of the comics are is cool, re-firming the the early period, tying it up in with some continuity, and re-presenting some old classics for a new audience.
I wish the same would be done with Death in the Family and Knightfall actually. Prestige format re-presentations of great stories that, as they are, are told in a cheesy, mediocre and dated fashion.
