I have always been interested in the character of Batman, and now i want to start picking up some of the books. i have heard great things about Grant Morrison's run on Batman, so should i start with older trades like the killing joke and batman year one or start with Morrison's run

Good jumping on points are year one, long holloween or Dark knight returns. If you don't want to have to deal with contiuity try dark knight returns. It pretty much got me back into batman back in highschool.
I wouldn't recommend Morrison's run for a beginner, I find his work kind of confusing.
Year One is a good place to start.
I would also recommend almost any old issues of Batman: Gotham Adventures or Batman Adventures you can find because, though these books are not in continuity and are instead based on the cartoon, they are pretty good short reads that can get you comfortable with the universe.
