So, do we think that "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?" will lead us into Batman's own "Man of Steel"?

I am excited and I'm suprised Gaiman hasn't written batman before at least in say a graphic novel form like Morrison's Arkham Assylum. I am psyched.

I hope that this story would be like the Superman story and could show us a happy ending for Bruce. :frown:

*Prays that this is a sign that Morrison is leaving Batman next year*

No, Morrison and Dini will remain on both Bat books going into next year and possbily longer. They've said that they are there until they've run out of stories or are taken off by editorial.

this is amazingly huge!!!!!!!
I don't get what they mean with "Grant's run on 'All Star Batman' ends on #12, and we're going past 15 or 16 on 'All Star Batman'". Do the mean All star Superman?

Holy hell that's awesome.
Great coup for DC.
And the new comic I'll be looking forward to the most.

January 2009?
Yeah, pull the other one.
Unless they've got the entire run in the can already, which, knowing DC, they won't, then that thing will be delayed until at least the summer. And Gaiman will likely need an additional issue or two more than he thought, and the ending will feel rushed.

What is Fringe? Why are people mocking it?
"Kevin Smith with a new Batman mini (with two completed scripts in already with a secret artist and covers by Andy Kubert)"
Is this the same Batman/Onomatopoeia mini series by Kevin Smith previously announced on this site with artist Walt Flanagan? A different one?
DiDio called up a young woman in a Supergirl costume to stand close to the mic (she was hot) and talk about the book's developments). But she stopped reading the title ten months ago, and proposed to act out her idea of what should have happened.I don't know what any of this means or its significance, besides I guess there was a hot young woman in a Supergirl costume? Great?
Apparently "Battle for The Cowl" wasn't supposed to be on screen regarding the Batman titles, and that was discussed. "So we have 'Battle for the Cowl ... oh sh**!" DiDio said.
Wayne put the kibosh for a video which will be shown. "It'll give you something to talk about as you're leaving the room." Instead, they opened the panel up for questions. What is it? Why was it shown? Is the Battle for the Cowl thing the video that Wayne put the kibosh on?
Is Johns supposed to be a steward of characters? Or is "Stewart" a new slang term?
Wayne got caught not listening to a question about trades and said, "Supergirl left, I have to go right now."
Which question? Did anything come of the question besides more discussion of some hot young girl in a costume?
"I'd rather be handed 'Doom Patrol' or 'The Outsiders,'" when asked for a flipside of "Stan Lee Recreates The DC Universe."What does this mean? Who said it?
"Greg wanted me to have the Spectre DOOT DOOT Doctor Light," Tan said. "You've really gotta check that scene."What does this mean?
DiDio dissed a retailer called Atomic Comics where "Blue Beetle" sells out and admitted, "I'm tired ..."What does this mean?
I realize time is of the essence with news reporting, but these reports seem riddled with errors and half-completed thoughts and bizarre non-sequiters about people's clothing and women's appearances. Is there a copy-editor or stringer somewhere? Do these things ever get fixed? This is a pretty good news site but these panel reports are damn near unreadable.

The entire Batman R.I.P. thing makes me a bit nervous. Bruce Wayne seems like he would be one of the only DC Icons that would be irreplacable. Also all the talk that RIP can mean something worse than death, maybe not death, etc, etc. Nothing really appears to be as it seems...

I love Gaiman, so I'm looking forward to this. But I'm also looking forward to seeing Denny O'Neil on Batman once again.
It looks like they're giving Morrison & Dini a break after RIP ends, at least for a couple of months.

I'm not one bit excited at all myself. Gaiman can craft breathtaking masterpieces when he's writing fantasy, but most of his superhero stuff is average at best, when not simply lame.
That said, the little Batman bit in the Black Orchid mini was pretty good, so who knows, it might be cool.

Dini, Morrison and Gaiman writing Batman, it's hard to imagine a better line-up. I hope they have many stories to tell, like for three years or more.

Maybe he just didn't have anything much to say about an alive Batman.
You know, if they had announced that anyone else in the world was doing a Batman version of "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?", I think my reaction would have been "Bad idea. Baaaaaaaad idea." But Gaiman? I'm in.

Gaiman Finds His Dark Knight
First details on the latest acclaimed writer to tackle Batman.
by Richard George
July 27, 2008 - Though some of its past conventions were rather quiet, DC brought quite a few powerful announcements to the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con, one of the industry's last conventions of the year. With Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver tackling The Flash, and with Kevin Smith working on a Batman mini-series, fans have quite a bit to be excited about.
There are few creators who could top the likes of Smith, Johns and Van Sciver, but few would argue that Neil Gaiman is definitely one of them. DC has just announced the legendary creator, best known for his work on Sandman and Stardust, is preparing a Batman project.
Introduced with a video at the panel, DC teased the project just enough to get the crowd talking as they left. After the "Batman RIP" arc, Gaiman's project will kick off.
DiDio mentioned there were a lot of good projects in the works. RIP comes to a conclusion in November. It will really be something worth reading. Following that there is a two-part story looking through what Gotham has become. Written by Denny O'Neill.
In January, DC is going to do a little story. They played a video to introduce the story. "Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader? Neil Gaiman. Andy Kubert. January 2009. Image showed a picture of a coffin with a Bat Symbol on it.
Stay tuned for more details from the panel. IGN will update this article as we learn more - if there's more to be learned. Be sure to check out our Comic-Con
im getting a bit worried with this although i think this new year with Gaiman will be legit.

I agree!
I was positive they wouldn't kill Batman, so I wasn't worried, but as time goes on it's getting harder to not be concerned. Even if they don't kill him, having him "step down" as Batman would be just as bad. Bruce Wayne as Batman is IRREPLACEABLE.
But anyways, Gaiman on Bats is VERY exciting, and it's nice to see Kubert back as well. I guess they need to get SOME work out of the Kuberts in order to justify the exclusive contracts.

I was thinking of dropping the Batbooks after RIP and switching to picking them up by the trade, but it appears I will be on the monthlies thru January. I love Neil Gaiman, I love Batman, so this is good news all around. Plus, a Denny O'Neil two-parter? Sold!

I'm sorry but Bruce can't be Batman forever. It gets boring. They need to keep things interesting. Giving up the mantle for someone like Dick or Tim to takeover is great. If anyone has read Batman #666. Damien states that he would never be as good as his father or Dick Grayson. Foreshadowing events to come. Exciting, for me at least!

yep this is amazing news. Neil Gaiman is my favourite comic writer, Batman is my favourite chacater, and it always pissed me off he hadn't done more stories on him
I only know of four Gaimain Batman stories. These are
Pavane, Poison Ivy origin
When is a Door, Riddler origin
Black & White (I don't recall this though)
appearances in Black Orchid

Bruce is awesome, no question, but him remaining as a character, albeit as either a non-Batrman, would still be great. No question that the costume will go on. That's what the bottom line is.
A Bat-story mirroring the famous Alan Moore love letter / send off to the pre-Crisis Superman.
This is big. Priceline big. and Gaiman fits the role.
