View Full Version : What About The Upstarts and the Externals?

Whatever happened to the Externals or the Upstarts of the Hellfire Club?
Did Selene kill both storylines?
The Upstarts was an idea by Scott Lobdell and just stopped- and the Externals was originally an overzealous idea by Rob Liefeld that Fabian Nicizea ended up making into a descent concept- That is until Marvel editors just erased the idea-
Gideon was a sweet character (best issue with him ever was New warriors 18- classic) who was mindlessly destroyed around X-force Mid # 40's by Selene.
Not to mention Sam Gunthrie should be immortal and an external and we have no progression of this
Why?

Selene killed all the X-Ternals. She's the only one that remains.
Sam was NOT an X-Ternal. Just... lucky?
Upstarts are all dead as well, except for Andre Fenris and Gamesmaster, who just vanished.

So Cable came back in time to groom the High Lord that would help his people in the Future.
and that High Lord was supposed to be Sam- Hence why He started X-force to Train Sam as well as to help his other needs-
and then when Sam comes back from the dead Killed by the BOEM - X-force 7 or so,
So when Sam comes back from the dead, it was not because he was an External, it was because he was Just a really Quick Healer?--
That makes about as much sense as the Madelyne Pryor From the X-man series really being an Alternate Universe Jean Grey -

I think there was one External besides Selene and Apocoylpse left wan't there? I don't remember Selene killing Krule, but it has been a long time since I read the issue.

How is Sam not an External? When was that established!? He's immortal.

Selene says it in X-Force. That's why she doesn't put him on her hit list.
Well, he definitely is SOMETHING. He survived a shot in the chest when the Purifiers invaded the mansion.

O'Rly?
Didn't his guts get ripped out a couple of times?
Without Tessa at the Hellfire Club, I wouldn't really take any of Selene's info seriously.

Okay so If Cannonball is not an External-
Why did Cable Groom Him?
I think Marvel needs to address this and not sweep it under the rug.

Several years ago, a poster on this board had a theory about how Sam came back to life. We know that Dani stayed with the Valkyries in Asgard at the end of that New Mutants storyline, and then wasn't seen again until she infiltrated the MLF. After that story was over she joined X-Force, and was asked why she left Asgard. She replied that the Valkyries kicked her out, but wouldn't elaborate on why. This poster theorized that in her capacity as a Valkyrie, Dani saw that Sam had just died and intervened to return him to life, maybe by fighting Death the way she did in New Mutants #41. However, Valkyries are supposed to ferry the dead, not restore them to life, so she was banished from Asgard because of it. That explains both Sam's resurrection (taking the External angle out of it) and Dani's banishment in one easy step.
Mind you, it's just a fan theory, never confirmed, but it makes as much sense as anything else I've ever heard.

I like this theory... but keep in mind, Selene has been known to deceive people on more than one occasion. (see also Nova Roma).
