View Full Version : Inferno Revisited?

From today's Lying in the Gutters:

HE WASN’T EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE THERE.

Did we really need to revisit "House Of M?" Was "Secret Wars II" dying to be retconned as the dream of an Inhuman? Did all the mutants need to be massacred one more time?

Especially since one eighties Marvel event seemed to be repeatedly ignored. And it was always my favourite. Absolute favourite. And deserving of… reinterpretation.

This San Diego. Marvel announce a new X-event for next year. Headed up by "Loners" and "X-Men: Manifest Destiny" writer CB Cebulski.

Stay clear of those fire hydrants...

Okay the fire hydrants obviously refer to the ones that were possessed by demons during Inferno, and this story got a green light from Rich. Not sure how it ties into those "X" teasers we've been seeing lately (with the man and the woman in the shadows and both have guns), though.

Perhaps the X-men all lose their powers magically somehow and have to fight like normal humans? No clue.

Well, they sure has been teasing Illyana's return like HELL.

Oyyyy.

I love Maddie.

Inferno was still crack.

And I hate Limbo and the Illyana/Darkchylde wonk.

But I do have faith. For I have faith in Bru-Frac, should this be true.

My bet is on Inferno!

If true, can Jean be too far behind?

Wot!?...again?...it was only a matter of time I guess..."they" are so fond of bringing properly dead characters back to life (all for the sake of money), and retconning living characters (who, I'm sure, wished they were dead because of said r-c)...of course the next step would be whole story arcs...(wot's up with Marvel and the need to re-hash/ret-con/re-invent everything that was great, interesting and original?...their MO nowadays seem to be "if it aint broke, go ahead and fix it")...alas!...obviously the creative pool has completely gone arid...sigh:frown:

I suppose that, given C.B. Cebulski is currenly penning Illyana Rasputin's return to the Marvel Universe, an X-related "Inferno"-type event is plausible, especially given that last remark about steering clear of fire hydrants (a nod to the demon-possessed inanimate objects after Limbo opened right above Manhattan).

I guess we'll have to wait until the San Diego ComicCon updates to be sure; but to the naysayers that are already beginning to groan, boo and hiss, I say give it time. Next summer is a year away - who knows how events will pan out? I, for one, am an avid Illyana / Magik fan and so eagerly await her return (if anyone in the X-Men universe had the most feasible way to return to life and was not named Jean Grey, it was Illyana Rasputin). Besides, I've read Cebulski's past works, and am confident in his ability to execute a well-crafted, exciting story. He clearly has a love of the character, so it'll be interesting to see what he has in store for Illyana, including what her return could mean for her friends, family, and the Marvel Universe at large.

I wonder if this plays into the whole destiny of the Messiah Complex baby or if that subplot is just going to be on the back-burner indefinitely (or until everyone just forgets about it)? Could she be Maddie Pryor reincarnated or something? Is this second Inferno the even that either kills a million people (according to Bishop) or saves all of mutantkind (according to Cable)?

Might be cool if that's the case, at least IMO. Especially since, in a way, it was Cable who ignited the Inferno the first time around as baby Nathan Christopher Summers.

If Inferno Anniversary is anything like Age of Apocalypse Anniversary, I'll pass due to fundamental continuity errors galore!

I don't think it's going to be an "Inferno Anniversary" per se, rather it will just be another crossover loosely related somehow. Magik is sure to be involved, though.

I don't believe the Inferno sequel event has anything to do with the current 2teasers released by Marvel over the last month....that's a totally different thing altogether.

The new Inferno event has also been hinted as being in the pipeline for almost a year now.

While I disliked the original event, I'm interested in this one since it's giving us the return of Magik.

CmX where are you?
OMG im so excited lol
My dream maybe will come ture

But anyways i wasnt in comic when this crossover happened so im glad maybe i get a chance to have a part of a different Inferno. And the creative teams we have right now are really good imo carey, ellis, yost, brubaker, and fraction. Good stuff
hopefully my fave character can make it into this crossover since she wasnt in messiah complex. but im not bitter

why would they have continuity issues with Inferno DDM?

It isn't going to happen until next summer?

i have to wait a whole year for Illyana to come back fully.

That is just an assumption a lot of people are making. You should find out when this is happening at San Diego.

All the Illyana teases must be leading to something. Also, if that's really Maddie maybe the Sisterhood and HFC subplots will figure into it too. Just imagine; Illyana & Limbo, Madelyne & the Sisterhood, Selene & the HFC/Cult all against each other, with the X-Men caught in the middle! Epic.

Was nice seeing Ray confirmed as the real deal though, compared to Maddie's spark.

Spark or not, Maddie was the star. Rachel spent the event dressed as Mrs. Havisham.

Mrs. Havisham never rocked the red mullet. Rachel was enchanting on her big day though... even if Crotus wasn't quite as dashing as asscheeX Havok.

it does seem like he was talking about inferno.

it was kind of revisited last year, though, in new x-men. belasco, sym the other demon guy who looks like a dragon and illyana all popped up again.

N'astirh? Maybe that was the plan to start it, or that story was the story to get the ball rolling to help revisit it. Maybe it'll be considered the prequel to Inferno II

Is inferno collected in tbp?

Yes, it covers the main storyline in Uncanny X-Men #239-243, X-Factor #36-39 & The New Mutants #71-73, although you may want to seek out the prelude to Inferno with X-Terminators #1-4 (1st: N'astrigh). X-Terminators is about the X-Factor kids fighting N'astrigh & keeping him from kidnapping 13 mutant babies to open a permanent portal from Limbo to Earth. The New Mutants also guest star in the limited series.

Madelyne Pryor is a sweet Charachter- But she has been dead since Inferno-

In X-man we thought we were getting her back, but that ended up being a lame alternate Jean Grey who looked like Maddie and not Jean-
what are the chances.

Also, Rich Johnston said that the title of the article ("He Wasn't Even Supposed to be There") is also a clue.

Que? Someone translate the clue because I am stupid.

That said, if Inferno has to be revisited, I sure hope Bishop becomes the new Goblin Prince.

Yes she has, she was in X-Man for the majority of its run.

She is a wonderful character, but Inferno is all about postpartum depression. Maybe Siryn will be the one trying to kill her baby?

The character Dante in the movie "Clerks" constantly repeated the line "I'm not even supposed to be here today." And, as we all know, Dante Aligheri (different Dante) wrote The Inferno.

That entry seems overcomplicated. And it doesn't have my favorite parts. Such as...

There's a movie instead. http://www.dantefilm.com/trailer.html . Those guys even did a graphic novel translation of it!
