She was a dinosaur because a telepath of a Savage Land dinosaur people triggered a reaction within her that caused her to be believe she belonged to their species and she started re-writing her own DNA to mutate her body into one of them.

Not to mention she once had pheromone powers, similar to how a skunk puts out it's stink, and she becomes in heat when she burrows. Hepzibah is a skunk who had been turned all white. This needs to be dealt with in the comics.
