Oklahoma County Commissioner Brent Rinehart is facing a tough reelection campaign. He's been accused of abusing his office for personal gain, and will go on trial in the fall on felony campaign finance charges. But apparently, this is all a conspiracy of homosexuals, liberal do gooders, and good ol' boys to force Rinehart out of office. Rinehart lays out his case in a comic book he's sending out to voters, which—you may be surprised to learn—he wrote himself.

I disagree as I think his strategy is sound as it is monstrous. No matter how embattled a leader is, if he can rally the people behind fear of a common enemy he will remain in office. On a national level this worked with George Bush in 2004. On a local level it might work with this guy, as gay people are what black people were back in the days lynching was seen as a form of social control.

In 2004 every state that had a referendum to define marriage as a union of man and woman Bush won it in the electoral college. Whenever Republicans want to rally their political base by creating a common enemy they go after gay people because they don't have to worry about political fallout from attacking a minority group. The reason that is has to do with the fact that you can take any two groups that hate each other, in fact kill each other en-mass, and they will be in consensus on the fact that gay people are an abomination of whatever god and or gods they believe in. I hate it, but it's a reality of the world we live in that gay people have no choice but to cope with.

That’s quite a comedown for an incumbent politician, to come in last in a three-way primary. But that’s exactly what happened to Oklahoma County Commissioner Brent Rinehart, the politician who mailed out a crude campaign comic book. He was trounced in the Republican primary, garnering only 21% of the vote.

So now, Rinehart has plenty of time to perfect his artistic skills. That, and to defend himself in Oklahoma County District Court tomorrow against several felony campaign corruption charges stemming from he previous campaign.
