View Full Version : RITA's LXVII: Why should false painting imitate his cheek
Brian Cronin
07-18-2008, 04:24 PM
Here's RITA's.
It's a basic off-topic discussion thread. It is named in honor of one of our favorite posters, Awesome Rita!
Think about it as her bar.
Same rules as the regular board apply, except, well, the off-topic part.
In addition, if you really must know stuff like "what is the biggest shit you've taken?" or "why is it hard for ladies to have an orgasim?," then you can ask that stuff here.
Also, as I think has been born out a few times now, please try not to use this thread to discuss other threads/posts on the Community Forum (or any other forum, really). Just post in those other threads (and, if it is off-topic for that thread, then just don't post it period - or try a PM!).
Otherwise, enjoy!
-Brian

Interesting problem in the Episcopal elections. Anti-gay preacher has withdrawn, so now it's down to either electing a pro-gay preacher or a black preacher. Now Anti-gay preacher's followers have to decide if they'll vote for the Homo lover or the Colored.
Hnh. That's funny as hell.

But in the Anglican church in general, them's your choices, and it ain't pretty, since the African bishops are a bunch of Phelpses.

I gots me new glasses so I can see the clock across the room now.
My left eye is weaker than my right eye. Oddly, my right eye gets worse if my vision is perfected in my left eye. For me to see correctly they needed to make the prescription weaker than intended for my left.
I also went to the hairdressers and got about 12 inches of hair hacked off. I brought a hair magazine in and showed her the styles I liked and she took one I liked and one I didn't and mixed the two. My hair's a little too pageboy like at the moment for me to fully enjoy it. I haven't had hair this short in nearly 14 years. It feels damn good and freeing.

Well, you've got an art thread. I might stop by to ask about how things are done. You're really up front and transparent with the paintings, which is fun.
Sometimes the best thing to take away the anxiety of painting is pointing out the obvious, "this starts as a few strokes of paint on a canvas and it's not gonna look good until there's a few hundred more, so quit whining".
I've never had a studio professor be that open. I've had one show work and it was so irrelevent to what they were teaching... I mean, I'm sure she's done the life-drawing and knows the history, but her body of work was based on repeating patterns, color swatches and embroidery, but with paint. I dont know how I've never had a professor that showed "these are the stages of a good drawing, and a good painting, notice how this one is just a few lines, notice how I fucked this up and erased here... hey look, I took a look into my reference file to get this object right, and etc..."
What kinda berry?

And when I get nervous, I lie by nature, just first response, "oh yeah, it was great, you're actually my favorite teacher". I can't tell the truth like I mean it, but lying...

Just when I was getting a good 'poor me' mope going on a friend called. Her husband had a second stint put in today. The initial procedure went well but an hour later he went into massive shock. Low blood pressure, pulse rate, the whole deal. There were four cardiac nurses working on him and apparently they were close to call 'code' on him. Scary shit. He's doing okay now and staying overnight at the hospital but damn, that's rough.

Nothing can hurt you like your own body. Hope he comes out OK and has some time to rest and replenish. A friend of my father just had a valve replacement and it's scary, but he's more alive than he's been in a while too. Formal occasion? No. Semi-casual? As long as it's dark blue.
2) the only shirts I have that don't make me look ridiculous are short sleeved and a bit 70s (i like the 70s, but short sleeves is....)
That makes me think you're talking about a formal occasion. Is it a cheery one or a somber one? If it's cheery, you might be able to get away with the short-sleeved shirt. If it's a downer, then no way, jose.

Quick Review:
Bullitt: I'd never seen the whole thing before. It's a competent police procedural with stoic cops led by stoic Steve McQueen trying to protect a federal mob infomant. It's an interesting look at how movies were made at the end of the Hays code era compared to how things work today. Individual scenes tend to run quite a bit longer than we're used to in modern movies. For example, we get several minutes of the doctors working on a gunshot victim. In a modern police procedural, we'd get just enough to get the point that he's badly injured and then cut to the results. Most of the scenes regarding the investigation work this way. Another good example is a search of some luggage for clues. We'd typically have a cut to indicate time lapse, or just come into the middle of it just before the cops find the important clue. Here we get it beginning to end, several minutes. This isn't bad, just different from what I'd expect.
The famous car chase is well done, but doesn't live up to its reputation. The acting is mostly wooden, the story pretty straightforward, and the scenes with Bullitt and his girlfriend awkward at best.
It has two main positives: Steve McQueen's screen presence and a pretty decent car chase.
Also, I learned that they had fax machines in 1968, which I found kinda neat. I'd thought they came in about a decade later.

Good shaving cream and a mach 3 vibro will do you fine. Fresh blade. Exfoliant beforehand if possible. I ran it under some water while on. Apparently, not only was I not electrocuted but it cleared out whatever was stopping it.
Y'know, that's technically not a suit.

The Picard Maneuver!
Geek test!Kind of disco, but not bad. Subtle-ish. Triangle collar, but smaller than the 70s and a disco-y pattern false plaid. And I think you just don't take off the jacket unless you're taking the whole thing off and the shirt looks fine. It looks a bit better in the mirror than me looking down at the distorted form of what was me.
Formal occasion? No. Semi-casual? As long as it's dark blue.

It's not a formal occassion, I just want to be formal (or look vaguely like a New York Chaufeur (I've got the hat for it). I'm not sure it'd be worth it, but there's got to be a way to make jacket-sleeves practical. Why would men put up with this kind of shabby tailoring for years?
Speaking of Steve McQueen, they had the new Bond trailer Thurs night and Daniel Craig is doing a decent job of the second coming.
That vaguely older gal?
I've never seen anyone pull off a bandanna.
Craig is very McQueeny. Those brutish but senstive stoics with blonde hair are hard to come by. Well, I don't know who was looking, maybe it's the search team that sucks. And yeah, her, and I'm exaggerating with the whole "love" thing. I don't believe in that crap anyway:biggrin: .
And the bandana I like... my hairs too short right now, but there's gotta be a way. bandana under a hat? I need to get the right combination of "I'm trying to hard to impress you" and "I don't need to, you just do this to me, even though I'm awesome". Still measuring pros and cons on the goatee.

Eh, it's just thinking. Thinking never hurt anyone.
Also, the suit is separate. And the bandana is separate. The goatee is stupid and I guarantee I'll shave within the hour (wrong shape head I think, I need more width). It's just the combination and the fact that I had a crisis of shaving that makes it all sound crazy.
I'm really just really upset I can't do a bandana. I'm in the land of casual thursdays.
I'll buy one. Start there, small. Nothing drastic, it's just a cheap purchase. It'll slowly find it's way to my head, and the second Ifeel stupid, it's gone.

Haven't seen it yet. Movies aren't really in the finances right now. I think I might be suffering from a mix of just general job loss-related depression, lack of doing anything social the last day or two, combined with a ridiculous amount of anticipation for the events of tomorrow.

Not really. Not for me, anyway. The anxiety is saved for pretty much every other aspect of my life right now.

Muffin and I went to a movie once and he talked the whole time in an Australian accent. It was totally hot, and everyone thought he was for real.

IMAX was sold out by the time we got there so that's my plan next week.
I love Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon. Aaron Eckhart is good too. Almost better as Two-Face than just regular ole Harvey.
Oh and Morgan Freeman continues to fucking rule as Lucius Fox.
Maggie Gyllenhaal's Rachel is ten times better than the Scientolobot's.
And not to jump on the Heath Ledger bandwagon but he is amazing. He creeps you out, frightens you and then pulls laughter out of you and then scares you again because you're laughing.

The third time I was at Granite Rock today I pulled up to the weigh station, got out of the big black ford, strolled into the retail office in my Xavier Academy t-shirt, shorts, and work boots, ready to pay and was just stared at by two yuppie women looking at decorative brick and this guy who was trying to be all macho as he shopped for patio tile. The bandana will only work if you can pull off the Solid Snake look.
Sh*t...
Just came across an interesting dress code for a San Diego bar. Not sure if they're avoiding trouble or dorks.
Nightly "NO": Beanies, Do Rags, Bandanas, Tank Tops, Sleeveless Shirts, Hoodies, Any Gang-Related Colors, Vulgar Printed Clothing, Heavy Chain Style Wallets, Militant Attire (Camies, Combat Boots), Timberland Style Boots, Athletic Attire (Jerseys, etc..), Neck and/or Facial Tattoos, Excessive Baggy Jeans/Pants, Plain White Hanes Style T-Shirts.
Wasn't going to any anyway.
The plain t-shirt is my regular bar outfit... I also have Timberland boots, but they're more subtle than the badass rappah ones.

We are at the base of a steep hill in an area that was once underwater. The alluvial sand is so fine that it is like talcum- it gets into everything. I really think the only thing holding it together is the redwood duff. When the rains come the area is a bog and in the summer it's a dust storm.
