I know absolutely nothing about this TV show aside from the fact that it deals with a younger Clark Kent.
However, I'm giving consideration to picking up the first set.
Any recommendations or damnations of this show?

It has its moments. As far as continuity goes it rather obliterates it, but there are some good bits in there. Martha & Jonathan Kent are portrayed well, and the Lex/Lionel Luthor drama kept me going.
It's far from my favorite thing with the DC stamp on it, and some of the choices are absolutely moronic... but I still have the box sets. If you find a good deal on them (I got most of them for $20) then pick one up and see what you think. You can always ebay or take 'em to a used bookstore if you hate it.

The earlier seasons feel like a cross between Dawson's Creek and Superman. It's basically a teen drama with a sci-fi foundation.
The later seasons ditch the teen drama aspect (for the most part) and embrace the comic book aspect, but basically by this point the series had gone on too long and they'd run out of things to happen. The stories go off on bizarre tangents and seem to lose focus of the original premise.
Overall I'd recommend checking out the first two or three seasons and see if you'd like to continue from there.
Most of the time it's mediocre at best, but on occasion it's just amazing.
So, expect average storytelling mixed in with one or two episodes a season that will leave you asking why the show can't be that good all the time.

Honestly, Smallville has it's moments, but you have to work through a lot of disappointment before you get to any of them. They have great story ideas at times, but they never develop those ideas to there full potential. That's what makes Smallville so disappointing amongst other things. i would say watching Smallville is a waste of time, but that would be hypocritical of me since i haven't missed an episode yet.

As the others have said, it's most ridiculous crap, but sometimes it hits what makes Superman special so squarely on the head, you become frustrated that they can't do that all the time. It helps that Jeph Loeb and Mark Verheiden are involved. In fact, it really took a turn for the worse when Mark left.

In order to enoy this show you really have to disconnect it from the comics completely and resign yourself to the fact that it exists in its own universe.
There are many good things like:
John and Martha Kent are really fleshed out characters. In fact, this is the best portrayal of the Kents on screen.
Chloe Sullivan - a character not from the comics but that really adds to the show.
Lex Luthor - very well played by actor Michael Rosenbaum
Lois Lane (in later seasons) - also very well portrayed.
Some good story arcs now and then.
The appearance of past actors who have been in Superman movies or TV shows like Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Helen Slater and others.
The bad:
Clark Kent is portrayed as an emo wimp.
Lana Lang is portrayed as a total idiot.
Kryptonite is used as a plot device in almost every episode!
The series has gone on way too long and sometimes it feels like its just treading water.

I think DonC has said it best so far....
I watched the first 3 seasons loyally.....Then the 4th season came out and instead of complaining about it, I quit watching do to my distaste for it.
I own Seasons 1-6 on box set.....a few were bought for me. Though I don't think I have even broke open the box set of Season 5 yet...and I've had that about what? 2 years now. Season 6 though wasn't half bad....
I find myself watching them in the box sets, that way I can fast forward most of the episodes that I dont like.

Actually, I really love Smallville's version of Lois Lane. I really think she is really sexy quirky character that stands out in a good way. That's why I like her more then Superman Returns Lois. SR's Lois is just so bland. There's nothing that sets her apart from the rest.

When I read that Doomsday was coming to Smallville as a love interets I almost screamed. DOOMSDAY DOES NOT BELONG IN SMALLVILLE. Doomsday is a creature that has no thought, has no ambition, has no feeling. It knows only to kill, Doomsday only belongs in one story and that is FIGHTING SUPERMAN. (although the subsequent stories with backstory were great in the comics.)

This. This this this. I can't believe they're actually including Doomsday in the new season... and he'll probably be an emo wimp too ;)
I don't have very high hopes for this season at all... but I'll keep watching because darn-it-all, I want to see Clark fly. I also keep hoping they'll use Kara more, but much like in the comics she's terribly underappreciated as a character. :(

Why does everyone hate on Lana for pete's sakes?
She was a great character in the beginning, but outside of romantic affairs she's almost useless. Overall, like many of Smallville's characters, they kept her around too long. For a long time, especially after she became a senior and when she gratuated high school, she was out of place. I think she actually found her place with Lex; though. I think she was great as Lex's wife. I actually prefer ruthless Lana. I don't hate Lana, I just thinking certain performances have a shelf life, and when they expire it's necessary to toss out the actor and get a new one.

I hate Lana, I agree it was semi entertaining when she was married to Lex, but if I could vote any one character off this show for good it would be Lana. I was thrilled to learn she would be in a limitted number of episodes next season

Why does everyone hate on Lana for pete's sakes?
Because even though KK is the best female talent on that show, there are times when they make it out where she wouldn't be able to make a single decision such as how to breathe without clark by her side and rather than keep the relationship going in season 5, they decided that rather then try and make it work they just end it and bring it back later. Thing is is more likely that Clark hasn't become the superman they know and love, which honestly is the one I aviod and hate and blame not getting the boring comicbook superman on Lana being there.
They rather like a character who in the second half of season 2 and all of season 3 pretty much had every single problem with her character that people complained Lana has had all along yet because its friggin chloe shes all forgiven.
Seriously, taking a job out of greed, getting her dad fired, stabbing her friend in the back by looking into his past even after he asked her not to, and then when Lionel treatens her if she stops she acts more worried about her job at the planet then her family and friends. Then she runs to Lex to protect not others but herself.
Chloe early on was so self centered and selfish its not even funny, but you never hear anyone mention any of her faults.
The odd thing is the 3 highest rated episodes of the show ever come in season 5 and 6 the most hatted apparently by internet fans and they also were heavy Lana/Clark or Lana/Lex episode.

Lana the character is beyond, beyond annoying. One of the worst parts of a terrible show. That said, Kristen Kreyuk is totally ridiculously good looking. I'd so want to make babies with her.

I actually liked it when it was starting out (which just so happened to be during the finale period of my own high school-career), but I finally walked away in 2005 and never looked back*. The show had some good actors on it (Rosenbaum, Glover, maybe Ms. O'Toole), but-- story-wise-- the whole thing just seemed to get more convoluted or unforgiveably stupid, and I just plain couldn't take it anymore; and what I've heard tell of since hasn't changed my mind (regardless of continuity, the JLA really don't belong in Clark's world at this juncture; and their idea for Doomsday is just Schumacher/Goldsman/Pitof/Halle/Jon Peters-level bad on it's very face).
*I broke this rule only when Erica Durance & Laura Vandervoort appeared in certain men's periodicals.

Wow Really?
Honestly it has always come across to me that she basically gets by on that show because her character is one of 3 who barely has an episode where the character is poorly written dialog wise. She seems more to just say the dialog and wait for others to react than actually act.
The times she does actually have to act based on the material shes extremely over the top or cheesy bad like im Freak, Tomb, and Progeny, Delete, Truth, etc. I just want her out of the scenes she is in so bad. Her facial expressions either go I want to look scared so I look around with eyes only or her screaming, theres no real movement in her face and her body movements are lacking as well. her arms and hands move the most but more than they should.

I never saw the show until about a month ago. I ordered the boxed sets -- seasons 1-6 -- for $20 or less a piece, and am on season 5 now.
Yeah, there's a lot of limp episodes...but overall, worth the watch for any true superhero fan, IMO.
Yes, you have to drop your expectations that this mirrors the comics. It's an Elseworlds universe.
The main theme they explore is that of the "secret identity." In comics, heroes -- normally thought of as moral paragons of upright virtue -- lie to the people closest to them to preserve their secrecy. In the traditional Superman comics, Kal-El actively deceives people like Lois and Lana to preserve his secrets, even to the point of building robot duplicates of himself. ("Look, Lois! How I be Superman when he's outside flying past the window?")
Smallville really delves into this theme, with the result that Clark often comes across as a real ass.
The thing is though, Clark's lies are totally consistent with the comics. Superman is supposed to be a totally whitebread paragon of a character. In the first Superman movie, he says, "I never lie, Lois."
Except it's not true. In regard to secret identity, Superman not only keeps secrets, he actively lies and deceives the people closest to him. He has valid reasons, but he still does it.
When you see the same behavior on screen for one hundred episodes, however, it really does make Clark look like an a-hole. But as I see it, that's just the Superman tradition. We're only looking at an often overlooked part of it in Smallville, a part that really gets the microscope.
So that's my two cents.

Oh...and allow me to add that the show's characterization of Lois makes her almost totally unlikeable.
Not Miss Durace's fault; just the way the role is written. But Margot Kidder's Lois wasn't half so abrasive a personality. Smalliville Lois is essentially a man in a woman's body.
She gets thrown out of college for engaging in a drinking contest. She beats up big, beefy guys twice her size, etc.
Seriously, when I see Smallville Lois, I sometimes think I'm watching a dude who got gender swapped!

I have never seen a dude who had a gender swap that looks even close to as hot as Erica Durance is. I just wish they had stuck to the mythology on things like Louis Lane, Clark isn't supposed to meet her until after college (oops they forgot college) when he starts working for the Daily Planet. Now the Daily Planet is supposed to be this great world renoun newspaper that hires kids straight out of high school with only high school paper experience. I remember when they started the show it had such great merit, boy did they kill that off.

Well, it was worth watching to Season 5 just to watch Lex call her a "muffin-peddler."

Yeah...if you want Smallville to parallel the comics too closely you'll be disappointed, no question. A prerequisite for enjoying the show seems to be to let those preconceptions go.

I think the show made a big mistake when they didn't go with the Clark being trained to be a Superhero by Jor-el plot line. I think the idea that Kal-el was trained to be a superhero by jor-el is a great idea. Instead he keeps on shrubbing his father off. The way they threaten Jor-el like a villain really annoyed me to.

Sure he will start out as they have described him but there is nothing say he'll stay that way. In fact it's certain he'll evolve over the season. In the end he could become the Doomsday we all know (different actor for size, special effects and makeup being added). Smallville rarely does direct copies of it's characters that come from the comics, especially when they are first introduced. Look no further then Brainiac. Then we have Curtis Knox who without directly saying it was clearly Vandal Savage. Same goes for many other characters. When it comes to the serious villains they've done right by them I feel in the end.

I actually also think brining Doomsday in was a bad idea, in poor taste. He isn't supposed to appear until Superman is well into his career. Clark hasn't even gotten his costume yet.
But even if we look at the show as an Elseworld series, Doomsday's presense is still a bad idea, because most likely they aren't gonna use any make up of his character at all. They seem to avoid make-up like the plague. They didn't even use make-up for Bizarro. They should have stuck to the Veritas story line. I think it could have lasted a while longer. The fortress of Solitude thing was alittle anticlimactic.

Doomsday is the "ulitimate." Nothing that Doomsday touches is supposed to survive. He is millions of years old and only kills. Adding any other personality to Doomsday is taking away from the only creature that can kill Superman. It took Superman using all of his knowledge and strength to combat Doomsday, the Clark Kent of Smallville isn't that Superman. I'm not only angry about the fact that they are bringing in Doomsday, next season Clark will begin working at the Daily Planet, I understand this is their take on the mythology but for christ sakes STOP REWRITING HISTORY. Clark Kent wouldn't work at the Daily Planet if he hadn't scooped Louis Lane on the Superman Story, Louis and Clark don't become (work) partners until they are both seasoned reporters. They are taking a failing show and making it worse.

After all of these years I don't understand why you and others still think they are or were trying to adapt the comic or the history of Superman. They are taking aspects of it and creating their own story and universe. The same way Lois and Clark did. They've been doing that from the very beginning. They haven't apologized for it nor has it been a secret what they have been doing. All thoughts of how things "should be" need be checked at the door when it comes to Smallville. It's been like that since episode 1 where kryptonite was introduced when he was just starting high school.
Before flying off the handle you should wait and see what the final result will be. Complaining about it isn't going to stop it from happening. However you've made up your mind already it seems and no matter what they do outside of showing him as the murderous beast from the comics will satisfy you it appears. However you need to stop thinking of or wanting Smallville to be a live action adaption of comic Superman. What happens in this show isn't going to be treated as THE one and only Superman history. You already consider the show a failure so why are you concerned what happens on it anyway? Why are you watching it if you don't care what they are doing, especially if it's actually making you angry?
Why people are upset about things like this I just don't get. The DCU has a multiverse where different variations of the characters exist. Smallville is a different universe. Things aren't meant to be the same as other versions. That would be boring.

I'd say that there really isn't any one, true, Superman history.
The idea of Superman has myriad universes and interpretations to it. It's just soooo big.
Smallville is merely one way of seeing the character. Works for me. Doesn't work for many comic fans.
Milage may vary, right?

I am not a huge Superman comic fan, I'm more of a Superman Mythology fan. Smallville started out pretty true to the mythology of Superman, but it seems to me that as of the last few seasons they are more interested in making the show as cheap as possible, using his hearing instead of X-Ray vision because its cheaper. As a loyal fan I feel I deserve better than whats cheaper. Bringing Doomsday into the show is just a last ditch effort to reserect a failing show. Even the creators of the show have jumped ship at this point. Just look at the last season finale, at the end of it my reaction was "oh well." Every other year I have had that jolt of exitement and that "can't wait" feeling. If that season finale tells us anything its that this show has ran its course.

Well this will be the last season. So I doubt they are trying to resurect anything but want to go out with a bang. I'm kind of glad the two creators that were there from the beginning left. Last season wasn't that great but they were there for that so they were part of the problem. Them leaving could very well be a good thing for the show and allow it to go out strong.

I hope so, I used to really love this show. I would love for it to do for me what it used to.
