Hellboy Forum Holiday Art Exchange 2004

Welcome all to the second year of the Hellboy Forum Holiday Art Exchange. Almost everyone posting on the forum last year participated in the art exchange and it was a huge success. If you joined the forum after the end of last year or didn't participate in the last exchange, now is your chance.

So what exactly is the exchange?

The exchange is an opportunity for forum members and fans of Hellboy to give and/or receive original Hellboy fan art. That's right, original Hellboy fan art. Each person creates a piece of Hellboy-themed art (it can be anything) and will send it to a randomly chosen person who is participating in the exchange. This is an opportunity to be super creative. If you don't paint or draw but can use a chain saw, then chew away at a log until it looks like Hellboy or a related character. And there you have it. A wide array of fan art was produced last year. Again, be creative. But shhhhhhh, it's a secret until the person receives his/her gift.

If you are suddenly sad because you swear up and down that you just cannot possibly create anything you would want to send to someone or you are just not physically able, that is where the awesomeness of this little community really shines. Several people create multiple pieces of art to send to those individuals who aren't able to send pieces of their own but would still like to participate in the exchange and receive some fan art. So don't hesitate to participate. 'Tis a time of giving and friendship!

It is important to remember that you will be sending your art directly to the randomly selected individual whose name you receive. This will require you to pay the postage. Remember that the Hellboy Forum is an international community and therefore may require you to send a package to another country.

Who can participate in the exchange?

The exchange is not an exclusive group. If you can post in the Hellboy Forum you can participate in the exchange. You will need to follow the instructions below to sign up. By submitting your information you agree to abide by the rules and follow through with your part of the exchange to completion. It is exciting and fun but it is also a commitment.

How do I sign up?

You will need to send a PM to me (petriacce) with the following information by 31 October 2004 @ Midnight PT.
Real Name - First and Last
Mailing Address
Reliable E-Mail Address (one that you check frequently)
Sending Art? - # of pieces you will contribute
Receiving Art only - one piece (everyone that responds automatically receives one piece of art whether sending or not)
I will send you a return PM confirmation that you are signed up and your name will be added to the participant list.

The personal information you supply will not be posted on the forum or shared with anyone other than myself and the person who is randomly selected to send you art. If you are under 18 years of age, please ask your parents if it is okay to participate before signing up. Please don't ask me for participant's personal information even if your intentions are good. Thanks.

What else do I need to know?

Here is the timeline for the exchange:
31 October 2004 at Midnight PT - Registration Ends.
10 November 2004 - You will receive an e-mail with the name and information of the person to whom you will need to send your art.
30 November 2004 - Please make sure you have mailed your art by this point. It is okay to mail it sooner if you would like.
Again, remember that the Hellboy Forum is an international community and some of us will be sending a package to another country. You should allow for extra time to make sure your package is received before the end of the year.

Please post any questions you may have on this thread. Note that I will probably have to make changes to the information in this post as we go along for clarification reasons. The bottom of the post will indicate the date of the latest edit. Please review the post occasionally to be aware of any changes.

Thank you in advance for your kindness, honesty and following through on your commitment. This is going to be another wonderful art exchange and I look forward to seeing the pieces produced by our community.

Please note that this art exchange is in no way the responsibility of Mike Mignola, Comic Book Resources, www.hellboy.com, Dark Horse Comics, Inc., or Jonell Napper; it's just a fan thing. Please be kind and only post questions pertaining to the exchange on this thread. Thanks.

Now you can own it!

I will create and print, kinkos will copy and bind, and all who want one will recieve....That Crazy F'ing Monkey issue2 (Super Secret Christmas Edition)!

In all honesty, I can't compete with the artists, but I can create a book full on nonsensical cameos, deranged stick figures, and rampanant violence. And I will produce a copy for anyone who actually wants one.

Complete "non-artists" found ways to make Hellboy related items like laquered collages and painted Qtips and *you* can certainly draw. It's a celebration of creativity, don't be scared off.

And a note to all who've entered: Don't put off starting this time! The point is to be done for the holidays!

petriacce
10-08-2004, 01:39 PM
Yep, all that works. Basically, people are kind enough to offer multiple pieces to cover those that can receive only. If there ends up being more art than receivers, then the artist can give it away, sell it on ebay, send it to the forum admin, etc.

One reason why I have the list of participants with the giving and receiving columns is so people who are creating multiple pieces can see the difference between the two and guage whether they should still do multiple pieces or stop with one.

When we sign up do we have to say what it is we are making or only how many pieces we are contributing?

For instance can you wait to see who you get and then tailor the piece based on what you know they like? Or is the idea to make something first and it's just luck of the draw?

Either way this sounds like so much fun! Those pieces from last year look great!

I've got some cool ideas already :)

You can wait until November 10 to see who you get before working on your piece of art but it doesn't give you a lot of time to finish. It's important to be timely in getting the gift out by the end of November. If you can finish it in time you're welcome to do whatever fits your schedule.

I wanted to post the latest stats on the art exchange. Not that it wouldn't be awesome anyway but I think these stats speak to what a wonderful community has been fostered here on the Hellboy Forum.

Number of people so far: 38
Number of countries: 6 (Australia, Canada, Denmark, England, France, and United States of America)
Number of females: 11
Number of males: 27

You all rock!

I know there are a couple of more countries represented on the forum and several other people who contribute to the uh..."uniqueness" of the forum. ;)

We have 42 people participating in the art exchange. I'll be compiling the information and sending out e-mails with the necessary information to send your art to your exchange pal.

Please try to take a picture or scan the art work you are sending. The plan again is to have a web page to showcase all of the art that is exchanged this year.

Please remember to send your art/present to its recipient in a timely manner so everyone has an opportunity to enjoy his/her art before the end of the year. International shipping can take a couple of weeks depending on how you ship the package.

Morna and I have received drawings packed several ways. Small ones usually arrive sandwiched between 2 pieces of cardboard in an envelope. A large piece came sandwiched between 2 pieces of masonite and duct-taped together. (Masonite is some kind of thin pressed board that's very smooth on one side and with a fine grooved grid on the other). What are the dimensions of A3 size?

Morna and I have received drawings packed several ways. Small ones usually arrive sandwiched between 2 pieces of cardboard in an envelope. A large piece came sandwiched between 2 pieces of masonite and duct-taped together. (Masonite is some kind of thin pressed board that's very smooth on one side and with a fine grooved grid on the other). What are the dimensions of A3 size?

It´s A4 times 2 - Gary. That´s a stupid question ;)
It´s also A5 times 8.
(In centimeters it´s 29,5 x 42,0 - if that helps.)

- Clever Jan

But Jinnaboy is obviously faster on the keyboard than me :)

ok, i'm not much of a mail person....so heres my question. what would be the best way to preserve an A3 size drawing and sending it half way across the globe?

Yeah, I rarely visited the post office before coming to this forum. When I've sent full size comic pages, I use two pieces of old foam core board to keep them flat and protected. Heavily taped around the edges of course.

And if you're mailing internationally, make sure both the address and return address is clear and marked as a gift (unless it's not) or it can be delayed a month in customs, even if sent priority.

Grrrr, customs delays..... grrr.

Maija

Just to add to Tad's note, here are a few more details that I've copied and pasted and done my own editing to for clarification. Canada Customs is getting very, very strict:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION IF MAILING TO CANADA

All postal items (except postcards) that do not display the complete name and address of both the sender and the recipient -- in roman letters (A, B, C) and Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3)-- are being denied entry into Canada. Sender or recipient identification such as Grandma or Aunt Ruth [or "Ruta"] are not acceptable and are among the causes of mail being returned. According to Canadian officials, this action is pursuant to the Canada Customs Act and reflects heightened security measures. Accordingly, addresses to recipients in Canada should be printed in ink or typewritten in capital letters, and the last line of the address must show only the country name, written in full, and in capital letters. When a Canadian postal delivery zone number is included in the address, mailing requirements allow that number to appear as the last line of the address. [I don't know what a "delivery zone" is. It's not the postal code]. Here is an example of a correct address:

ROGER SMITH
4129 JUNIPER AVE
TORONTO ON M5W 1E6
CANADA

Toronto- city
ON- 2 character abbreviation for the province, in this case, Ontario
M5W 1E6 - postal code, ALWAYS 6 characters, ALWAYS alternating letter-number-letter-number-letter-number

Customers also are reminded that complete and legible customs declarations -- along with required import documentation -- must be provided to specifically identify the contents of any package. General descriptions such as gift or present are not acceptable. [In our case, "drawing" or "hand made figurine" would be sufficient, you don't have to say "drawing of Hellboy".] Canadian Customs offices report a backlog of incoming postal items containing incomplete or inaccurate information. According to Canadian officials, these items eventually will be returned to their points of origin for correction by the sender as soon as practical.

Just wrap it completely in bubble wrap, and put it in a box with enough room to have it surrounded with packing peanuts. It should be fine to ship out of country.

When shipping out of country, you will be asked to fill out a new shipping label, with a blank to write in "gift".

Morna and I are glass artists and have shipped our work for almost 20 years. We also have a glass gallery and ship all kinds of other artists work. Generally, you can pack stuff the way John just described. If you think your piece is really fragile, or are really worried about how it gets handled, you can take the extra precaution of "double boxing" which means that you pack it the way John just described and then you find a box which is 2" bigger on every side and pack your box inside the larger box with packing peanuts.

A recent rule change affecting Canadians shipping to the US is a ban on boxes with any text on the exterior other than the shipping label and complimentary ducuments/labels. This would seemingly rule out using scrounged or second hand boxes but wrapping your box in plain paper is an easy solution.

just a note:
UPS requires double boxing on anything fragile you want them to insure. 1st thing they do if there is a claim is check for it

wrapped packages: USPS does not accept wrapped parcels anymore (from what I understand it can tear and jam one of thier machines)

if you found the perfect box but it says something on the outside like 'jack daniels' or has too many labels to try and cover, you can always turn the box inside out. I have done it many times..cut all the tape seams and then carefuly cut the glue seam and then re-tape it all once you have flipped it

At this point I have to assume anyone not responding is no longer interested in the exchange or has been prevented from participating.

Now we can anxiously await seeing everyone's terrific art.

If you are receiving art only then you don't need to e-mail anything. The e-mails I sent out were to confirm the information provided for the exchange and to give people the address(es) of the person/people to whom he/she is to send art. You're okay.

Wait no more Ose - I found your package in my mailbox this morning. It was a wonderful treat just before I went to work.

Thanks so much! However could you tell it was Abe fan-art I was wishing for most *whistles innocently* ;)

Abe's going on my wall as soon as I make a Hellboard Art Exchange frame for him.

Holy crap, Gary! That glass Screw-On Head is beee-utiful! Rassa-frassin' lucky bastage what gets it!!

Thanks John! I am really happy with how it turned out. Most of my glass work is either vessel oriented (bowls, vases and stuff) or quite abstract. I relied heavily on resource material for this piece and the front, side and back views of the Screw on Head you posted were a huge help. Oh, and please tone down the language, this is an all ages forum after all! ;)

Thanks Petersen,

I was really worried it was too cute. My other idea was just an action shot. But Bushpig and my wife, Paula both thought this would make the better piece. It was a nightmare getting his head positioned right so it didn't just look like he wa looking down but actually had fallen asleep waiting for Santa to arrive.

Your pieces are amazing also. I love that style. Very unique.

I was running a bit late today for my life drawing class [that locks you out til the next break when you're late] when I happend to look at my mailbox as I pulled out of the driveway, and BOOM saw a little package, took a quick glance at the overheard sky and literally turned my car around to jump to my mail box to save said package from potential rain [or snow... it is Canada afterall :P]

Inside my mailbox was a small little package from Hellgirl 1886 that thrilled me to no end!

I now own my own B.P.R.D. necklace and believe you me that made my day! [lol I feel like an official member now] and the B.P.R.D. paper was a REALLY excellent touch!

You couldn't have tailored a more perfect gift because I am a notorious jewellry wearer, [just ask Ose!] with a mass collection of necklaces that I wear all the time and now have a proud new addition to the bunch... it should feel right at home with my Celtic charms and clan necklace and key.

Thank you so so much! You really made my day! :D

[I'm not sure if you have a picture to upload to the exchange site, but I can always take a picture of it with my digital camera for the site if you'd like :)]

And might I also add that I am loving the submissions to the Hellboy exchange site! Such a wide array of talent!

My bad.
I'm afraid my contribution is (and will continue to be) late. I was hoping to get the piece out today but I decided not to rush (and therefore tempt ruining it) so Monday it will have to be.

It shouldn't be too much of a problem though - I have sent packages to the intended destination city before and the package will arrive well in time for Christmas.

Like everyone else I think that Johann head is awesome! And using it as a fishbowl would be hilarious!

Heh heh. Thanks for all the compliments folks. Glad you like it. I hope the recipient likes it too. I wanted to make something Christmas-y without nailing it down to the holiday so I just sent Hellboy to Canada. Yes, it's the sasquatch. Kokanees for all who guessed correctly! Although I don't think the sasquatch roams on the Canadian Shield, which is where this forest is in my head, but for all we know he could. The Shield is a whole lotta forest. This forest is also a sugar maple forest in my head, so there is a sugar shack nearby where Hellboy can drop in later for some pamcakes. ;)

Hey Ruta, great piece of art. HB's coat made me smile; I'm pretty sure my Mom used to have one of those when I was a kid.

Glad you liked mine, as well. I decided to include the frame as it's part of the presentation. It's hard to tell from the pic, but the image is actually transparent, inside a floating frame. I thought it made for an interesting effect when placed against the wall. :)

I finally got my second exchange piece into the mail yesterday (express post). I would have had it in a day sooner but our car got towed with the box in it. Why do city companies always have their lots outside of town?

Ruta, I really like your painting. The subject is a natural winner with this exchange but the painting itself is beautiful. The shadows coming from the bright moon between the trees are great. Makes me want to walk in snow in the light of the full moon.

Mvranas, your description of you composition being transparent has me fascinated. It's so appropriate to the ectoplasmic goodness of your drawing.

Yikes!! Well, I'm glad it was just towed and not stolen. Wait, that doesn't sound right, because I'm not glad it was towed either. Lesser of two evils. Pooh!

Thanks, everyone, for all the compliments on the painting. It was the first watercolour I've done in about 10 years (not counting the two first attempts at this one) and a bit of a technical challenge. I have new admiration for Petersen's work!
