First time I recall reading that she was a lesbian on-panel was during the New X-Men when they recruited Prodigy.

I think that was the first time that the "I'm a lesbian" words were spoken. Or did she mention it in the MECHANIX miniseries where she was crushing on Kitty Pryde?
However there were indirect reveals/hints along the way. None more blatant than during the "Road Trip" Era of XForce when they meet up with Shan at The fictionalized Burning Man event and Karma has drastically altered her look and is haning out with more recognizable Lesbian visual stereotypes.

X'ian had a lot of intimacy issues back then and didn't really get close to anyone. Then of course she got hijacked by the Shadow King and we got "Phat Karma" for awhile.

No I dont belevie she was intended to be a lesbian but I was saying that it was left very open ended to the point that the revealtion didnt contradict anything that was written about her before it. In hindsight now, you can kinda pick up on things and read her from a different viewpoint, knowing that she will be revealed to be a lesbian

What I would like to see as fallout development from Karma's injury in Second Coming, instead of a cyborg leg, would be for Xian to develop the abililty to be a part of the action without being physically present in battle.
The realization of the unnecessary peril she puts herself in would hit home and lead her to take on an altered role more akin to DC's Oracle, with an expression of her psi powers evolving to be more like Malice or Mountjoy in the X-Books.
IIRC, Warren Ellis wrote Karma with this ability to use one of her teammates as a "ride" into battle as part of his Alternate Future Pete Wisdom's X-Men.
It's not that big of a stretch to amplify her range in this way, and adds a bit of interesting storytelling possibility with Karma held in physical reserve should the team ever need backup faced with any surprises in the field.

Has anyone gone on record on why they wanted her to have a mechanical leg? It may be the opposite, that they want her to be more able to be physically present in battle. Forge kept weapons in his robotic leg. She could do the same.

Truth is she is one of the most used New Mutants in the last years. Less used: Magma, Sunspot, Cypher, Warlock and Magik (until her big return).

Bumping this up because I love Karma, and I am shocked no one is talking about her new place in Astonishing come March and what looks to be a new leg. I am excited to see what is in store for her, I think she had some nice moments under Wells in New Mutants.
I think it is a good move for her to be on a team away from the NM, like Brubaker was going to do in Uncanny.
I am especially glad to see her being used because I was nervous she would be sidelined after the leg thing.

I do wonder if they will start to expand on her power set. It would seem that she should have some limited form of telepathy to the extent of thought reading and broadcasting if not more. I know in the past she has been shown to have a few moments of a wider range, I know she does a few things in the Truth or Dare miniseries and I think the Beast miniseries that weren't typical possession type feats (I hated typing that word).

Bill Sienkiewicz drew classic Magik and classic Phat Karma.

She had great characterization in the Zeb Wells New Mutants run, then the new creative team shuffled the cast. I knew that Magik was moving on to the flagship, but was bummed for Karma. The news about Astonishing is great. She's on a bigger title with a great writer. Great news!

Like I said in the Astonishing topic, I'm glad they kept the yellow. The cover is beautiful, and I can't wait for Liu to develop Karma. Women are Liu's strongest point and Xi'an is perfect for her.

I'm not keen on the mask, and I do like the yellow better than the pink, but I think one of these, in a different colour would've been cool. Perhaps green to match her original look and later graduation uniform.

I actually kind of love the idea of Karma having pink as a signature color, I always imagined that if she was to get a unique costume that it would need to work with white/black/red/green but definitely digging the pink. Kind of a shame that they had to go back to yellow.

Even though yellow is probably the superior choice, it make it look like a standard X-Uniform rather than something original. I've been dying for all of the New Mutants to get some original costumes.

They really do need unique costumes! Weaver mentioned that the pink was only really a problem because it's the same as her power signature. We should get a decent colourist in this thread to show us what else could work.

The pink does work for her...not sure about the hair. Speaking of hair, history shows it to be a favorite color of Shan's.

I love that as a child, she tried to stab Shan's mother. How much more perfect can a character be? Karma has a history of crappy relatives, so I suppose it's not that shocking.
